Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Center for Weight Management at St. Francis Hospital
Only problem: All the med pumps have these alarms that seem to go off every 15 minutes, and the nurses IGNORE THEM. They also ignore it when you hit the call button. I finally got someone to teach me how to reset the pump myself, so I could stop the beeping.
One other problem: Staff should speak English sufficient to give undertandable instructions. This seems to make sense.
I had a few nurses that needed to go back to their basics for some refreshers. The thing that bothered me the most is when my Iv machine was not working they just said they didn't have time to mess with it and left and never came back. I sat there and watched nothiing go through the tube connected to me! Finally a nurse from the next shift fixed it and then my heart rate went down to 40! I'm not sure if this was because of the machine stating back up and rushing everything into my system or what but at that point I freaked and asked for the doctor. He released me that next day! I think that in life we run across people that just don't live up to what we expect....especially when we are in their care. For the most part there is too much demand on one or two people....when it needs to spread not-so-thin!
It sure seems to me that this is the place in the NW to have anything bariatric done. The best surgeons work there, the NW Center is there, the entire hospital staff is incredibly friendly, accommodating, service-oriented and impressively well versed in these procedures. I almost didn't want to leave . . . almost!
If you get to stay in the out-patient side, I understand they are great, but if you are put on the in-patient wing, the care is pretty slow and uncaring. It generally took between 30-45 minutes to see a nurse after pushing the call button (and I didn't use mine often, but my roommate needed more attention). Marilyn, in billing, was excellent to work with. She was incredible!
I had serious anemia issues prior to surgery. The outpatient support for my pre-surgery preparation was outstanding. Everyone was supportive and encouraging. The are especially aware of WLS and WLS patient requirements. Although my primary pre and post care is via SWLC - the St. Francis Weight management staff brought me a "go home" gift of a diary/journal (good sized), a book on the lap-band and contact information. After I got home - both the outpatient surgery clinic and the Weight Management group followed up with a call to make sure my recovery was going well.
My only drawback was the quiet. I was in a semi-private room and the person beside me moaned constantly. I guess she was having a hard time. I also do not sleep well away from home, so of course, I wouldn't do well there either. Overall, the staff was excellent, they were attentive and worked with me in every way. They explained everything and kept me drinking water, they would give me almost anything I wanted (as long as I was allowed to drink it) and encouraged me every step of the way. Both pre and post operatively, this staff was awesome!!
