Norton Suburban Hospital
My experience started out fine other than the nurse could not find my vein for my iv but she found one eventually (I do not have small veins either). Once in my room it was very large and private and was on the second floor. I did not have the special bed but I did have the bariatric bar which was fine. When I would ask for pain medicine it was given to me but it usually did take a while to get but when I asked for it once I was given a double dose of the wrong pain medicine. The nurse realized his mistake and took the right moves to correct it. Now the doctor that came in to see me (not Dr. Shina) he made me feel as if taking this medicine was my fault. So that was an unpleasant encounter. I had 2 nurses that were great and I had one aide that was exceptional, she made me get up and walk and she helped me take a bath and washed my hair which had not been washed in about 4 days. I did not care for this hospital for my care and would probably not go back. I also developed an infection while I was there but they were able to clear it up thank goodness. Most of the time if I asked for anything I had to wait for a while. Just one more thing that happend was at 5:30 am I had asked for some more ice chips and water and the aide took my pitcher and said that she would be right back and she finally showed up with it at 6:30 am and then apoligized for it taking so long. It should never have taken an hour to get some water. So again I will not go back if I can help it.
I had a nice large private room on the 7th floor where most of the bariatric patients are placed. They really helped my husband out by finding him a bed to sleep in. I however did not get the special bariatric bed that Dr. Shina likes for his patients. I have mixed views on the staff. I liked most of my nurses but only saw them for pain medication, etc. and very briefly. I found one or two to be very patronising. If I had a hard time getting out of this conventional bed, they weren't sensitive and gave me few instructions on how to move, how to manage my pain, how to turn, etc. Most of the aides had attitudes, were not well trained or were lazy. I was there 5 days and only 1 aide voluntarily gave me a bath. One aide I had for several shifts just wanted to bring me a pan of water and some towels. I actually confronted her about it on my last day there and they gave me another aide but my husband had already helped me with yet another bath. One thing the aides were really good about was bringing me ice chips. Thank God for that at least. My surgeon says he chooses this hospital because of the excellence of the surgical nurses.
Everybody from the nurses that did my pre-op test to the nurses and staff of the second floor was just great, I can't say enough about the hospital and everybody that I was in contact with they made me fell great about myself and never once didn't responce to my ever need and that is something that I have never experienced at other hospitals that I have been in. Thanks to all
