Norton Suburban Hospital
Suburban and the majority of its staff are excellent. However some of its staff could use some help. I spent 3 days in ICU because of the low amount of oxygen in my blood. The weekend nurse was an angel. She was extremely supportative, knowlegable and sensitive to my needs. The last ICU nurse was heavy-handed. She would grab the front lower edge of my binder and yank it down. This caused the sides to cut into my hip and hurt. When it was time to transfer me to a regular room, it was several hours between being told I would be transferred and it actually being done. This caused me to go into a different room. Guess whoever was put in Room 404 on Monday, October 20th, got the flowers my husband ordered. When anyone mentioned my bed, this same nurse would talkover anyone and everyone to say that 'this' (the bed I was laying in in ICU) was MY bed and I wasn't getting another bed. I tried 3 times to tell her that my Dr. preferred his patients to get a special new-type bed that helped patients sit and get up. She would not listen just insisted that I was in the only bed I was going to get. When she finally took me to my room, Room 407, the other nurse told he there was a bed in that room for me. She said no and actually removed that bed from the room before pushing me and the bed I was in into the room. I never did see that new-type bed I was supposed to get. I really need assertiveness training. Not to be less assertive, but to be more assertive.
For pre-op testing, it was a disaster. It is hard to tell if it was a one time thing or not, but I seriously doubted their abilities by mid-morning. It could have been co-ordinated so I knew where and when I was supposed to be somewhere, instead of guessing. I felt my decision on WLS was questioned from the very beginning with registration, their comments were not needed. I have surgery scheduled for Friday, and I am hoping that in-patient goes better. *****Now post op, and having been inpatient for 28 days following additional surgery for bowel obstruction, I really do not like the hospital, but in their defence, they are in the process of having a bariatric floor just for them, and maybe that will help.
Although two nurses seemed to be caring and competent the overall performance was poor. Although there were orders for me to get out of bed right after surgery nobody came to help me for over twenty four hours. I was not given the spirometer I was supposed to have, and was not monitered. Could not get nurses when needed. I developed atelectasis,(lung collapse) because of lack of care, lack of movement.
