His clinic is in Denton, Tx.

Dr. Stewart is friendly and very easy to talk to. Experineced in WLS and his knowledge is up to date. Very cautious. More than 300 procedures & no patients lost. He sincerely wants to help patients resolve obesity problems. Staff is firendly, responsive and geared to the WLS patient.

We met a group setting & I had hoped for at lease a little time one on one with Dr. Stewart.

What was your first impression of him/her?

Very intelligent; knew exactly what he was doing; serious concern for and understanding of obese individuals.

How did your impression change over time?

It's only gotten better.

How would you describe his/her office staff?

You couldn't find a better staff. All of them treat the patient like a NORMAL person, often not the case in other physician's offices. You can't imagine how important actual eye contact is and I have noticed that obese individuals are often treated very differently than persons who do not have weight-related issues by health professionals.

What did you like least about him/her?

I can't think of anything even slightly negative to write about him or the staff. I would like to see him at a comedy club though - he's very serious...laughs

What should future patients know about him/her?

That he is a very serious person. That's a good thing for a surgeon.

How much does he/she emphasize aftercare?

It's absolutely required and I'm not going to be the one to argue.

Does he/she have a structured aftercare program?

Yes, very structured. Am looking forward to it.

How did he/she address the risks of surgery?

Very thoroughly - I felt educated and I am even in the medical field.

How would you rate him/her overall?

Well above average.

Which is better, surgical competence, bedside
manner, or both great?

Both great.

I went to a seminar with Dr. Stewart today. First impressions: He's a surgical geek and that's a good thing. I get the impression that he enjoys what he does. He seems to be very down to earth, he doesn't seem to have the "I'm a surgeon, worship me." complex. Very professional.

Most of the other seminar patients didn't show up so it was myself and another patient listening to the Dr. go over every minute detail involved.

As for the seminar itself: it was long and painful. They need more comfortable seating. I am surprised that his office has a lot of these teeny tiny chairs that you have to squeeze your butt into. I could have done without the first 2 hours of the seminar as it covered what obesity is and why we are obese. The rest of it though was fascinating. You can tell he really enjoys his work as he explained some of the difficulties and challenges he experiences with the technique.

He did go over the risks in great detail and we found that very interesting.

Dr. Stewart seems to have a very structured aftercare program.

He seems to be quite competent. He didn't come across arrogant. I quite like him.

Written by husband - Jamie -
First impression was that he knew what he was doing. He took several hours in the group setting taking care of all questions and explaining the procedure. He was very up front about all the possibilities and risks. His office staff was well informed and helpful through the entire process. They would do anything for their patients.

When we got in the hospital he seemed to be in and out pretty quick and in a hurry. He was thorough and professional but seemed to be a man of few words and always in a hurry.

This impression continued on untill Sheila had to go to the ER 13 days post op. Sunday afternoon about 2pm He was there within 15 - 20 minutes of our arrival. He wrote orders for tests to be run and left. He returned later that night and spent a couple hours in the ER going over charts, talking to us, working with a lung specialist and formulated a game plan to decide what was wrong with her.

He spent a long time both times he was there talking with us about what it could be and what he was going to do to find out and then what each of the cures would entail.

I've always been confident of his skill but now I'm even more assured of his caring about the patients. Over the last few days he's stopped by and taken the time to talk to us about how treatment is going.

He has been very helpful and knowlegeable. If we had to do this all over knowing what we do now, we would choose Dr Stewart again.

I was very impressed when Dr. Stewart took about 4 hours with me and other prospective losers to explain the surgery and the possible risks involved.

I only became more impressed with Dr. Stewart each time I went to his office. He is a very intelligent and caring doctor.

The office staff is very nice and accommodating.

Dr. Stewart is a professional and conducts himself as such. I don't think he understands my kind of humor, but that's okay. He's my doctor, not an audience for my jokes!

Dr. Stewart is aware that some people will fail to lose their weight after WLS. He makes no bones about! "It is a life-style change and it is up to you to do it!"

We have a book that guides us through the journey--exercise, eating, vitamins to take, etc.

Dr. Stewart did not downplay the risks of the surgery. It is a major surgery and all major surgeries have risks. He did go over the types of risks we were facing with this type of surgery.

I rate Dr. Stewart over all as one of the best doctors in the field of WLS. He was upfront to say that he can perform the Laparascopic, but felt more at ease with open surgery. I had open surgery because he removed my gall bladder, appendix, did a liver biopsy and fixed a hernia, in addition to the bypass.

I would rate surgical competence over bedside manner any day. I would rather have a doctor who is competent in what he does rather than someone who has a great bedside manner. It's a plus when they have both!

I picked Dr Stewart because he is in the same town I live in and he can do the RNY LAP. I had already gone through the preliminary process with a Dr in Wiley Tx, but wanted the RNY to be done LAP.

I was so impressed when I went to the seminar in Dr Stewart's office. The Dr personally conducted the seminar for 4 hours! (I just thought I had done my homework and knew a lot about weight loss surgery.)

I had spoken with the staff (Leigh) several times prior to my actual apointment and she never disapointed me. She always took the time to answer my questions and explain things to me. She is definately an asset to Dr Stewart!

During the seminar, the Dr took the time to explain all of the risks in detail. (I could have used a few less details.) My husband was with me and I think it made him nervous, but very informed.

After the seminar, we met with the Dr one-on-one. He was very professional and answered all my questions. He explained that even though we are going to try to do the RNY LAP, it may have to be converted to Open. I appreciated his candor with me. When I told him how concerned my husband was, he spent a few minutes answering my husbands questions and then making sure we understood all aspects of the proceedure.

He has a very structured aftercare program. I will meet with the nutritionist prior to the surgery and have to follow all aspects of the aftercare program.
Since I have not had the surgery yet, I do not know how his bedside manner will be, but so far I am very impressed.

My first impression was very good.

The longer I know him, the better I like him.

His staff is excellent.

I really don't have any complaints.

He provides quality care, service, compassion, and is very knowledgeable.
He emphasizes aftercare strongly.

He has a very good aftercare program, and stresses it highly.
His aftercare is structered.

At consultation time, he stresses the risks of surgery as well as the good. He stresses the risks more.

I think I could have looked all over, and could not be more pleased.

I think surgical competence and bedside manners are virtues that Dr. Daryl Stewart has.

November 11, 2003 - I met Dr. Stewart at his introductory seminar and then the initial consult. He is very informative and seems to be both sensitive & supportive. His staff is friendly and knows the ins & outs of this process. I am looking forward to working with both he and his staff.

January 13, 2004 - I have now completed everything but the actual surgery (it's in 3 days) and I am still impressed with the staff and Dr. Stewart. They answer questions that I didn't even think to ask!

My first impression of Dr. Stewart was that he was all business and I trusted him because he was not rushing me to have the surgery. As I recall he just said that I meet the requirements (BMI @ 50+++, 380lbs, and other health factors) to have the surgery and when I comply with all the pre-op requirements, we can think about setting a surgery date - in fact I got the impression that he thought it was I who was rushing through the process. I have great respect for Dr. Stewart's surgical skills and I feel fortunate that I selected him as my suregeon. My impression hasn't changed much since the surgery except that he seemed a bit more friendly. Dr. Stewart's staff was great. I could tell that they have a great deal of respect for Dr. Stewart's surgical ability. As far as what I liked least about Dr. Stewart was that he was all business - and thats what I liked the most. Future patients should know that he does seems a bit distant but is my opinion that he is a skilled surgeon and I think really cares about his patients. Dr. Stewart strongly emphasises aftercare and has a structured aftercare program. Dr. Stewart conducted a pre-op seminar about the surgical process and did not sugarcoat the associated risks. I would rate Dr. Stewart very highly. In my opinion, the most important factor in rating a surgeon is surgical competence.
