St. Alexius NewStart Hospital
I would recommend anyone considering this surgery in the STL area consider the New Start program and the surgeons associated with it. Dr Richardson is too awesome for words!
Also, the nurses and all around staff at St Alexius were absolutley the best, they went above and beyond for me and my guests, I cant say enough about them. The head of nursing came to chat with me during my stay and asked if anything could be changed or made better and the only complaint I had was that the hosp should allow for more nurses to be hired, especially at night, she said she had been working on that but that they had to work at a certain staff/patient ratio. So I think St Alexius should consider "floater nurses" or hiring a few extra. But over all they still worked at above and beyond for you.
I was a little concerned based on the reviews I had read here before my stay. I was more than impressed with how I was treated and the overall experience with the hospital and the 5th floor staff. I was too warm, and they found a fan for me, without me asking. Only comment is to be aware that before someone leaves the room to be sure to put phone, call light etc back into reach, but once I asked, it was done immediately and with a real sense of caring on everyone's part. I hopefully will not need to go back into the hospital, but I would have no concerns about going back. All the rooms were private rooms, and had a pull out bed in the couch so my husband could stay with me there. He was not given any static about adhering to visiting hours and they even gave him meal passes for the cafeteria for each day of my stay.
all through my stay from same day surgery area to recovey to the floor i was on, it seemed we(bariatric patients) were mingled in w/ all the instituionalized (nursing homes, group homes, mental)patients that the hospital was receiving. there was screaming and kaos all around. I felt like I was in a mental hospital at times. I was lead to believe that the whole floor was bariatic patients
I had a pleasant stay at the hospital. It was very accomodating. I had a private room with a couch there for my husband to stay with me. The room was large so when visitors came, there was room for everyone. The nurses were great especially Niece who helped me take a shower on the third and fourth day. The bird sanctuary in the day room was awesome. The only bad thing about the whole experience was the barium swallow test in x-ray. The x-ray doc was very hurried and curt. To get the x-ray you stand on a little shelf thing and the x-ray comes down in front of you. It kept hitting my stomach and hurting. I kept telling them it was hitting my incision and hurting. He said, "It doesn't go out any further." I endured it so that I could get to drink something afterwards. But the surgeon, nurses and floor staff were awesome.
