St. Alexius NewStart Hospital
For me, I wish that I had a little more hand-holding than I received. I guess my RNY bypass was complicated by hernia repair and this required more surgery time than normal. Afterwards, with the medications I have been taking, it was VERY confusing trying to sort out what I was supposed to do. Most of the staff that I dealt with were considerate and competent; however there was a few very significant exceptions to this which really made one day after surgery pretty miserable for me. Technically, they did a good job but sometimes it did not feel like I was very cared for.
I don't know how well I would have done had my mom not been with me. I was very good about walking after the surgery. I think Monday night I walked 6 times. Release day was less, but they were having me do a lot anyway. Communication on pain meds were apparently not given. Morning nurse said she is giving me all she can, when I mentioned it to the night nurse she said I do have the option for somthing stronger. That was a life saver. They were a little slow at answering calls. They staff was very friendly though. It is not that I wouldn't recommend them, nor will I complain to the surgeon. I wonder if they would have been more attentive if my mom hadn't been there? Luckily everyone with surgeries that day had someone there.
Nursing staff in post-surgical care was absolutely horrible. Unresponsive, was un-caring, my pain ball (releases pain medication to surgical sights) was clamped off and they kept telling me I shouldn't need as much moraphine, but they never checked the pain medication drip...I was in pain for 24 hrs without them checking to see what was wrong..until my mom wouldn't let up and then the nurse went off on her...and later found their error. They must get all the nursing school rejects.
