St. Alexius NewStart Hospital
this is a very small inner city hospital in a very bad neighborhood. the hospital was clean all all the ax staff i came in contact with were very nice and helpful and went out of there way to help you. was a very nice surprise. nursing care could have been much better which is the case at any hospital due to the nursing shortage.
i too am a registered nurse and understand staffing /pt ratios but some of the problems i encountered was poor nursing care. i don't think it had anything to do with staffing or this is how i felt when i had to wait an hour and a half to get pain med and help to the bathroom.
the new start program tries very hard to accomadate their pts. and make their stay comfortable. if you go be sure and have a family member stay with you. i did not and that is why i had more problems. i think the program would be much better if they would change hospitals possible move to county.
I was blessed to have such wonderful nurses taking care of me. There were four particular nurses that was amazing. They talked with me, made sure I was ok with everything and gave me great positive feedback. One of the nurses even told me that she wanted me to go back and see her once I had lost the weight. My experience with St. Alexius and the staff there was remarkable. I would recommend that hospital to anyone.
The hospital was fantastic and very respectful of me and treated me with respect and dignity. I had one problem with one nurse giving me pain meds in a timely manner. The only other problem I had was that initially I was told there would be no problem with my 8 yr old spending the night there with my mother. Then I was told the day of surgery it was against their policy. I understand that it is against policy but it would have been better to know that upfront and not have been told something different.
This small, VERY clean and patient-oriented hospital is a jewel. The staff (from registrars, housekeepers, phlebologists, rad. techs, radiologists, anestheiologist, surgeons, to the dedicated nurses,) was top-notch and I (and my visiting hubby & son,) were treated wonderfully. As pain-free and private as I could have wished. A stay on the 5th floor bariatric ward included a private rooms with sleeper sofa for my husband, and free meal vouchers for him, as well. Parking is free and close to the building. It is in a slightly run-down but-hoping-to-revitalize part of the city, but this should not make you at all concerned. This is a top-notch facility where patient care and supressing pain is the #1 priority. I HIGHLY recommend this hospital with its wonderfully attentive staff.
