Shawnee Mission Medical Center Hospital
I have to say one thing. The first night when I the doctors order were to dangle my feet, I had a CNA (nurses assistant, etc) come and sit me on the edge and then she washed my back for me. It felt soooo good and just was a little something special that made the night much better. How sweet was that, because I had my baby here 3 years ago and they don't do that in the maternity ward.
(I held off on doing this for a couple of days to let things blow over.) The first thing i must say is that the overnight nurses were awefull! To try and ween myself off the iv the day nurse thought i should take what i would be taking at home every 4 hrs. Sounded good to me, except when it came time for the drugs there was no nurse bringing them to me. I used the call button twice, and still no drugs. Also, i found myself having to go to the bathroom a few times overnight, and they made me feel it was an inconvience for them to help me. Also, when going to the bathroom during the day the nurse had asked me to not dump the urine, so they could get readings. I assumed the same went for the night nurses. So when i went the 1st time and told them and got no reaction, when i went the 2nd time i dumped it. After the 3rd time, she asked if it was the only time and i said no, there was about 200 in there earlier, but i flushed it. She then proceded to scald me on not to do so. And, I'm thinking, u didn't give a shit earlier, why are u yelling at me now. Another incident was when i was told the head nurse was gonna come in and look at my iv (cause it was really itching and hurting), "she'll be right in" turned into about 1.5hrs later.
The night nurses were just plain horrible. By the time my mother came in to see me the next morning, i was just singing the Beatles song, "Help". :) Katie and Nikki were great, but Moesha (not her name, just cause i can't remember it, but that's not too far off) and Shyral were bad. It was enough for me to wish i had done it at Olathe, with Dr. Opie.
The nurse did not check on me the day of surgery very often. I had a staple leaking and if it had not been for my husband I probably would not be here. Then the nurse had the nerve to ask my husband if he had messed with the drainage tube/ball and that is why I lost so much blood. The had to give me 6 pints of blood when they were rushing me back into surgery.
The hospital itself was excellent however the nursing staff in general was grand except I had a poor nurse on one occasion. She was rude and brass and had no bedside manners. My husband stayed sleeping in an easy chairs with me the whoel time I was there and this CA would come in all hours of the night slinging the door open banging the wall and flipping all the lights in my private room on at once. On one occasion she went to take my vitals andwas reaching across my body to apply a BP Cuff. When the cuff slipped to my forarm I reached down to pull it up and she physically removed me hand saying it can be taken there. I accpeted this but when she was done she ripped the cuff off so hard her hand smacked my stomach very hard and her comment was awww you'll beok and she left. I think this one nurse has no place on a medical ward and will be calling the hospital to report her mean manners.
