Shawnee Mission Medical Center Hospital
I was 24hours away from recieving surgery, and the hospital informed me they were canceling my surgery...
They were investigating to see if the BPD surgery fit the image that the hospital wanted to protray to the public.
Now, since I'm not able to have the surgery on the 30th (today), my insurance will no longer pay for the procedure due to a plan change as of the 1st of Feb. My only options were to have the surgery before the end of Janurary. Now since the hospital has suspended this surgery from being preformed untill further notice I'm SOL.
Any thoughts or help in what to do next would be helpful.
The staff was really great. They kept me informed of what was going on with me and was very helpful. I had a pre-op meeting with the anesthesiologist, nurse, and physical therapist. They went over everything that would happen, and made sure I understood all of the details of the surgery and recovery. It was most helpful.
The response time was dismal. I would want to use to the restroom and they would take 20 minutes to get there.
One of the nurses in particular was incredibly bad! She was told by a doctor to change one of my bandages (she didn't). I also told her about my hand swelling up from the IV and she just ignored me. Whenever I asked her anything she would stare at me blankly and not say anything.
Most of the CA's were wonderful and some of the other nurses were great (just too busy). SMMC really needs to hire more nurses. The ratio is about 1/12 . You get 1 CA and nurse for every twelve patients. That's TERRIBLE.
The floor nurses varied greatly from superb, and unbelievably professional, to one nurse one night who acted like it was her last night before retirement & just didn't give a damn. With 8 years working the streets of Kansas City as a Paramedic & Flight Paramedic, much less a lenghty personal history of surgeries including ICU stays, I have to say that the ICU staff at Shawnee Mission Medical Center was the rudest, most uncaring, and most generally obnoxious I have ever encountered! (One ICU nurse got smart with me & argued patronizingly with me like a 5 year old child when I asked her a question! It, and the rude, uncaring behavior of all the ICU nurses I encountered was VERY uncalled for.)
