Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital (COE) Hospital
I stayed an additional day in the hospital becuase I was a little nervous about coming home. This decision was very supported by my surgeon and the nursing staff. I only have a few small complaints: The nursing staff is spread too thin and this creates long wait times for patients who need help (not a huge deal if you need help moving something, but not good if you are needing help in the bathroom!); the midnight shifts tend to be noisy; and one of the step-down unit nurses I had has no business being in the nursing field! She was very uncaring and had I been able to get out of bed while she was giving 'report' on me, I would have yanked the phone from her ear to remind her that I had my stomach operated on - not my ears!! Also, this nurse didn't like to let patients know that flowers had been delivered to them - mine sat on the counter, in my view, until I was transferred to the Surgical Ward - I had to ask whose lovely flowers were those in order to receive them.
The rest of the staff that I came in contact with are welcome at my home any time of any day - they were fantastic!
The hospital was fine. The only thing I didn't understand was the nurses.
The night of surgery they had me in a chair with my legs hanging down for over 8 hours. I had just had surgery that could give blood clots in the legs, why did they leave me in a chair with my legs hanging down?
The nurses never checked if I finished my meals. I thought this was something that should have been done.
I feel the overall care of this hospital was excellent. I know they were capable of handling anything. I did have one nurse that did not want to give me my pain medicine until I had to practically beg for it. She also did not keep up with when I should be starting on clear liquids and then to full liquids. My advice is to always ask. If I had not asked I might of had to stay in the hospital longer. Other than that the staff and doctors were amazing. They all took time and monitor you very well.
