I loved Dr. Lutz from the first day I met him. He is by far one of the best surgeons ever in my opinion. He told me all the good and bad then asked if I still wanted to do it. Anytime I have a question or a problem I know I can call his office and I love that. Dr. L was wonderful through surgery and through post op.
My first impression of Dr. Lutrzykowski was a good one. He immediately made me feel welcome and comfortable in his office. He did not make me feel shame for my weight at all. The only way my impression changed was to realize even more that he is a wonderful man. He sincerely cares about his patients and his work. I knew that he and his staff cared, but it wasn't until the day after I was out of the hospital I realized how much. I left the hospital with instructions to call the office every day to check in and update them with how I was doing. The very first day I was not feeling well at all and kept putting off calling and just rolled over and went back to sleep. At 2:30 pm that day, the very first day that I was supposed to call, my phone rang and it was Julie from the office and I could tell that Dr. Lut was close by. They were concerned about how I was doing. Julie called in two prescriptions for me. Well things happened and it wasn't until 11pm that night that I went to get them. The pharmacy said that they were not called in at all. I knew this couldn't be true, but how could I get the pharmacy to produce a prescription that they had obviously lost before filling and not putting in their computer? I paged Dr. Lut thinking it would be probably an hour before he called me back. To my suprise he called back within a two minutes of me paging him! He himself called the pharmacy that night and I am not sure what he said to them, but I had my prescriptions filled within 10 minutes of paging him!
He and his staff are wonderful! Words just cannot say enough! They stress the importance of aftercare and keeping in touch with them and other DSers and stress the fact that they are always there for you if you have questions or need anything! I was less than a week out of the hospital when the holiday weekend rolled around, I was given not only the Dr. that was on-call for Dr. Lut, but assured that if the on-call Dr. was called, that Dr. Lut would be notified in Florida where he would be vacationing for the holiday. I am sure if it would have been serious, he would have came back to check on his patient. Not only this, but I was given the home phone number of the office staff incase I needed anything or had any questions that were not of an emergency nature!! How many office personel do you know that leave you with their home phone number incase you have a question??? Most would think that a question could wait until Tuesday!
Dr. Lut was very straight forward about the possible risks of surgery and was quick to tell me the probability of me having these problems based on my personal weight and health.
He takes great pride in his work and insuring the well being of his patients! I have not met one person who has had anything but wonderful things to say about Dr. Lut's bedside manner an his surgical comptence. He will only perform the surgery at Genesys hospital because he believes they are the best and he wants the best for his patients. One of my nurses in the hospital was actually a patient of Dr. Lut's. She said that she had seen him and watched him closely as he cared for many patients and finally one day she decided that weight loss surgery was for her and Dr. Lut was the only man she would want to do it. That says a lot to have a nurse who cared for his patients and saw his work and bedside manner to say that. She said she watched him and his patients for two years before she finally had the surgery. She said she was picky and only wanted the best! Dr. Lut is wonderful! He is number one!
At my last Dr. appt Dr. Lut. saw me and came into the waiting area to talk to me. "Dana You're smiling!" He said as he approached me. Yes, I said, "would you rather I didn't?" He said, "NO! It is good to see you smile, it shows me that you are feeling better!" He is warm, caring, intelligent, honest and has a good sense of humor. I honestly cannot think of anything negative to say.
Dr L is the most compasinate, caring Doctor in the world. His straight forwardness and not beating around the bush is comforting. He is allways on call day or night if you have a problem he will get back to you within 1 hour guarenteed. Anyone thinking about having Gastric Bypass surgery could not get a finer surgeon.
Sincerely grateful..... Philip Sanner
Dr. Lutrzykowski is SO nice! He spent a lot of time with me, explaining everything & answering all of my questions. He is extremely sensitive, warm & caring. Dr. Lutrzykowski requires a strict aftercare program, with a fee of $4500 which is normally NOT covered by insurance. I can't wait for my surgery!
What was your first impression of him/her?
Dr. L is great! He was upfront about what I could expect from the surgery, the possible complications, and how he felt the surgery could benefit me. He is a really great doctor.
I had high expectations going into his office and he exceeded them all. He was recommended to me by another surgeon that my mother worked with. They indicated that if they had a daughter that Dr. L is the only one he would trust to do this operation correctly and provide the follow-up care that is needed. To me, this was the best referral that could be given!
How did your impression change over time?
My impression of Dr. L is that he really cares about his patients and is willing to help you through whatever obstacles you may encounter after surgery.
How would you describe his/her office staff?
Great! They are so helpful and I had so many questions after surgery and they never made me feel as if I was an inconvenience.
What did you like least about him/her?
Nothing! Everything is the best it can be!
What should future patients know about him/her?
That if they choose him, they will be in the best hands.
How much does he/she emphasize aftercare?
This is one of the most important parts of having the surgery. He requires that you sign an agreement that you will come to your follow-up visits at 10 days post-op, 3 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and yearly thereafter.
Additionally, he conducts group meetings every other week, where we either have speakers or some sort of guest. He always allows plenty of time for any questions that anyone may have.
Does he/she have a structured aftercare program?
Definately! (See above)
How did he/she address the risks of surgery?
He is very upfront about what may happen, he does not try to sugar-coat anything.
How would you rate him/her overall?
On a scale of 1 to 10 he is definately a 20!
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside
manner, or both?
I wanted someone who is very surgically competent, but did not want to sacrfice bedside manner. Dr. L offers both or I would not even have considered him!
My first impression of Dr. Lutrzykowski was that he is a kind caring person. That he truly listens when you talk and that your thoughts are important to him. This impression has lasted through my visits to his office and the many aftercare meetings that I have attended, prior to and since my decision to have surgery. Dr. Lutrzykowski's office staff is friendly, thoughtful and knowledgeable. At this timeI am comfortble with my doctor and his staff and hope to remain so.
Dr. Lutrzykowski has a mandatory aftercare program. I was told that surgery was not a option if I was not willing to participate in the aftercare program and make life style changes. The aftercare program seems to be well outlined, though some of those who participate are self centered enough to believe that it is okay to hold side conversations while people are speaking. This is distracting to those who are trying to learn from the speakers.
Dr. Lutrzykowski was no shrinking violet when it comes to addressing the surgical risks with my family and me. He was very up front and addressed each of the risks fully. In my opinion Dr. Lutrzykowski did not hesistate to invite questions and he was quick provide straight forward answers to those questions.
I will have to address surgical competence and bedside manner after my surgery. I have heard nothing but glowing reports of both aspects from those with whom I have spoken regarding Dr. L.
These are only my opinions as a patient, I can not speak for others. Knowing that each person is human and no one is infallable, I don't doubt that others may not share my opinions.
I liked Dr. Lutrzykowski from the moment I first met him. It was at a support meeting. I was checking him out. The fact that he, and not one of his staff, was there impressed me as did the obvious affection that flowed to and from him and his patients.
Seeing him in his office on a one to one basis confirmed my opinion of him as a good man and knowledgeable doctor. I feel comfortable that I will be having my surgery done by him. His staff has been very helpful.
There is a strong emphasis on aftercare, which is not the case with at least one other doctor who does this surgery that I checked out. Dr. L requires people to attend a suport session every two weeks for two years! I'm glad I went to the support session to hear what patients were asking and to listen to his answers. I also went out to dinner with 5 of his post-ops and observed their healthy looks and what they ate.
POST-OP UPDATE. The surgery went beautifully. I was up and walking around the night of the day I had surgery. Dr. L saw me every day. His confidence in his skill and in me was such a help. He is such a decent human being!!!He definitely stresses aftercare and requires that we attend support sessions every other week. Every single person I know that has used him as his/her surgeon has been absolutely pleased.
The first time I saw Dr. Lutrzykowski was at one of his support meetings. Even though he was running the meeting, most of the support was coming from the group. That is the way I feel that a support group should be run. Made a good impression on me and my mom who came with me.
When I went in for my consultation on 9/25/01, I found him to be more matter-of-fact than he was at the support meeting. That is good, I want a surgeon who knows what he is doing. He is very knowledgeable in what he does, and doesn't sugar coat anything. He tells both the good stuff about the surgery, and also the risks. I can tell that he cares about what he does in that he told me that I had to loose 10-15 pounds before the surgery, or he wouldn't operate on me because it wouldn't be healthy for me. That makes me feel good, he's not just in it for the money. He really does care.
His office staff are great, no matter how many questions I call with, they are very helpful.
I would recommend him to anyone who is thinking about have WLS surgery done.
