I'm starting all over with this revision. My previous doctor was a joke but now I have Dr. Miles.
I have gotten the medical records from my previous surgery (1983) and I have my consultation with him on January 28, 2002. WISH ME LUCK
Dr. Miles is GREAT. He was very caring and thorough. I had no problems at all with the surgery except for a ton of pain but that was to be expected. He was very good about allowing me to have pain meds but not allowing me to get too dependent upon them. Good guy.
I liked Dr Miles from the start...I liked the way he had all this organized...learning from previous operations, and incorporating this knowledge in pre-op screening...
Even though each member of his staff was courteous....they never returned phone calls...and waiting over two months with no follow-up as to progress of insurance, is a long time of not having anyone updating you...
What I liked the most, and what I think new patients should know, is that Dr Miles DOES change requirements as problems occur...THAT is important....He cares about the end result, and encourages support groups...
Dr Miles requires you attend a seminar prior to the first consultation...It gives the risks and the benefits....
In this instance, bedside manner AND surgical competence are needed...This is NOT an easy surgery from what I hear...and the follow-up to recovery is very much left to the patient...As Dr Miles says, he can do the surgery, but we have to live with it....That's why he suggests the support groups....
I like Dr Miles so far....from what I hear from others, and from him...
Dr. Miles seems to be a fine caring man. He listens to what you have to say & he is willing to sit and talk as long as ones need to get questions answered. Dr. Miles also wanted to let me know everthing about the surgery good and bad. I give him a BIG OLD HUG RATING OF 10!!!!

The office seems to be in a turmoil with many back logs of letters that has yet to be sent for insurance approval.

He and his staff are great. They make you at ease with the surgery process. My husband and myself are having the surgery.
The only thing I was disappointed in was the speed in which my insurance requests were processed. They were sent to the wrong BCBS area and it caused a 2 month delay in the time that Dr. Miles initally gave us. Otherwise I am more than satisfied. The presurgery, group meetings and program itself was well structured and comprehensive. I am having surgery on 040102. Dr. Miles makes sure you are informed and ready for the process.
041102 - 1 week 3 days post op. Dr. Miles did my surgery laporascopic, it took longer to do because of the way I carry my weight, but he managed to stay with the lap procedure because he knew how much I wanted to avoid the open procedure. I have found Dr. Miles and his staff, supportive and very knowledgable. I was especially impressed with Medical Center East hospital and the nursing staff. I couldnt have done so well without there support.
052302 - Dr. Miles did my husbands surgery on 052102. My opinion has not changed. He is great. Very professional and down to earth. Great at what he does. I truely think God guides his hands.
I am going to a seminar on March 16th. Dr. Miles requires you go to this seminar first. I'll let you know how it goes.
3/21/02 The seminar was great. Full of information. I also attended a support group meeting and really enjoyed hearing everyone's success stories.
Dr. Miles was there to answer questions. He seems very nice and very knowledgable. And also very caring.
5/11/02 I had my consultation with Dr. Miles yesterday. I had to wait on him because he had an emergency. But, he is very thorough and willing to take as much time as need be to make sure you understand everything about the surgery. His office staff, especially Deborah, were great. I did mention to him that we may be moving to Arkansas, but I really want him to do the surgery. He said that wouldn't be any problem but that he prefers to do the aftercare. My husband said that would be okay, that we would just drive back. He did make sure we understood that there are risks, as with any surgery. I would rate Dr. Miles as top notch. One of the best. He has a wonderful bedside manner as well as surgical competence.
FINALLY got to see the doctor..Had a 6 week wait to get an appointment. When I arrived at the office, the staff was great. Dr. Miles was running a little late and they kept us informed. When I was called into the back..I was weighed (oh yuck), blood pressure taken and basic alleries and medications discussed with the nurse. Dr. Miles came in and was very pleasant. He asked what kind of research I had done. He asked if I needed a preview of the surgery. I told him that I had been researching for about 5 months and had seen documentaries of surgeries, etc. He sat down and said "I am here for as long as you need me--let's talk". We covered the pros and cons of the surgery and I decided this was going to be my surgeon. He can make you feel comfortable. He makes sure you know that there are REAL dangers and could be complications--but he is very experienced..
Went to see the insurance clerk and she was GREAT..I will have to get her name...
We have scheduled the lab/x-rays, nutrition class and psy evaluation. Then we see an internist in June..Dr. Miles said the surgery should take place in about 10 weeks.
Will update when I know more.
FYI**The psy that is used by Dr. Miles does not bill your insurance..They will give you the paperwork to send in yourself....The visit price is $375.00
Meeting Dr. Miles tonight at a pre-op seminar. Will update after that. It was a full house. I met Dr. Miles and he was super. He gave a great, no holds bared seminar. Hope to get in for an office visit within the next couple of weeks or so. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. The funny thing is..... He even wheeled me back out to my car! How many can say a surgion has ever done that for them? LOL :) UPDATE: got into see him. His office staff is great! NOTE: It takes a while to complete all the pre-op things that he requires for the surgery. This is because he is so indepth to make sure this goes as safe as it can. This is a great plus for him in my book. Hey, it's your life were talking about.
WONDERFUL INFORMATIVE SURGEON-HIS OFFICE STAFF IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD THE PRIVILEDGE OF HAVING ON MY TEAM. DR. MILES EMPHASISES AFTERCARE AS WELL AS OFFERS HELPFUL IFORMATION AS HOW TO BETTER PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE SURGERY. HIS AFTERCARE PROGRAM IS A MUST DO. YOU WILL BE GIVEN A LISTING OF HOW OFTEN YOU HAVE TO COME BACK IN FOR ROUTINE FOLLOWUP CARE. THIS IS A STRICT REQUIREMENT OF DR. MILES. HE APPROACHED ALL THE POSSIBLE RISKS OF SURGERY AND ANSWERED ALL OUR QUESTIONS AS HONESTLY AS POSSIBLE.
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR. MILES TO ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN PURSUING THIS AVENUE OF HEALTH CARE.
DR. MILES ALTHOUGH PROFESSIONAL IS EXTREMELY FRIENDLY ALWAYS HAS A SMILE ON HIS FACE AND PUT ME TOTALLY AT EASE IN HIS CARE. HE IS AS COMPETENT A DOCTOR AS I HAVE EVER SEEN.
SINCERELY- A. MARIE DAVIS
First met Dr. Miles ten years ago when he performed colon surgery on me. He has a wonderful bedside manner, and put me at ease about what I was about to face with the surgery. (Well, as much at ease as possible considering I was scared out of my wits from a consultation with another surgeon.) Having confidence in your doctor makes all the difference in the world, and a good bedside manner is a bonus.
After hearing of a WLS Center at a local hospital I called to get information. When told Dr Miles was the surgeon I was ready to make an appointment on the spot. Of course they did not allow me to do that; there is a mandatory seminar to attend before scheduling a consultation.
Dr. Miles' office staff is so kind and helpful. Everything has gone soothly, and from reading other posts I gather it has gone rather quickly. My first consult was Feb 19 and my surgery date is April 26.
At the time of your consultation you must be prepared to commit to very structured post-op care.
Dr. Miles explained the risks of surgery, and compared open RNY to the previous colon surgery I had, so I feel I have a pretty good idea of what is ahead. (Knowing sort of what to expect didn't slow me down a bit, and I am happily counting the days until April 26.)
My experience with Dr Miles to this point has been very positive; both his surgical competence and bedside manner make me completely comfortable with my decision to have surgery.
