Gastric bypass-Dec. 2003
I was pleased to see everyone that has commented is doing great. My surgery also went great for a few years, but then I developed ulcers in my pouch and the intestines. I kept loosing weight, down to 89lbs at one time. August 2009 a feeding tube was inserted outpatient,OMG it was so painful afterwards, probably the worst pain ever. On December 21st, 2009 the ulcers ruptured. Dr. Miles did emergency surgery and saved my life. I spent 6 weeks in the hospital. We had several bad experiences with the hospital staff, and Dr. Schmidt but NOT DR. MILES. He treated me like his daughter. He made me smile and feel so much better everytime he came into the room. I was sooooo sick. This was a horrific time in my families life, and Dr. Miles was so honest about my chances of not making it through surgery, but he told them in a way that they knew my life was in the most capable hands that we could hope for. I still have my J tube and probably will for a long while but I am up to 120lbs-(Jan. 9, 2013)and feeling much better. I love this man with all my heart. Thank you Dr. Miles
The first impression I have of Dr. Miles (and my only impression at this date) is that he is an incredibly talented surgeon. He is a no nonsense, tell it like it is, available to help doctor. The bariatric program at St. Vincent's East is exceptional (a COE), including seminars with the surgeon’s required before scheduling an appointment, nutrition classes required before surgery, attending a support meeting required before surgery as well as a vigorous follow-up process.

I was suffering from back pain, diabetes and weight gain and my internist recommended my to have the Lap Band. Dr. Miles was very informative about the good and the bad of the surgery. It turned out to be a good thing for me. I am no longer taking any more medication for my diabetes and my back pain has decreased from having the weight loss surgery.

My first impression was kind of scary, because I had no clue what to expect. I was very impressed by his speech at the seminar. A few words he mentioned \"God\" and I felt safe with him. Right before the surgery, he pinched my toes and said hi! I told him I was nervous about being the last on the chopping block as I called it. He smiled and said, \"I am just warming up. I have had plenty of practice this morning.\" I laughed and went to sleep in perfect peace. I was right. He did a terrific job. No complications, no vomiting, etc., etc. I was not impressed with his office staff but he is taking care of those issues. He completely covered the surgery, risks, and allowed me to ask questions (of course I had no idea what all to ask). I would rate him as EXCELLENT in Lap-Band surgery.
