John P. Grant Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Grant is a wonderful and supportive surgeon. He has a team of people that work with him to ensure that every patient is treated with respect. For the first time my weight was treated like a health issue not a personal weakness. The evaluation process moved pretty quickly, and at every step of the way Dr. Grant or a member of his team explained or discussed what was happening. The only negative thing I can say is that the surgical program has grown so fast, they could really hire more staff. The Dr.'s are so busy, and the office staff is extremely busy as well. However, I never once felt like they were too busy to answer a question, or talk with me about something.
I have not met with Dr. Grant yet. I filled out a 5 page questionaire and sent it back to him. He will review and let me know if I am a candiate for surgery. I pray that I am.
I met with Dr. Grant and Dr. McMhon today and I was greatly impressed. They seemed to really care about the patient. They spent 3 hours with a group of us just talking and explainning and answering any questions that we had. I have had many surgeries but I have never met a surgeon who spent any time with you. This totally amazed me. The staff was great, however you do need to be prepared to wait. It was an all day ordeal.
Liked Dr. Grant on first meeting him. He has a new associate also, Dr Ross Mcmahon who is great too. Dr Grant explained the surgery, both the positive and negative aspects. However, when I saw Dr Mcmahon on the day of my pre-op work and he walked me through the procedure in laymen's terms, he really made me so very comfortable. They were both open to any and all questions.
My impressions of both Dr Grant and Dr Mcmahon has only gotten better. They were there for me at the hospital to answer any questions, and since I have been home, called once left a message and received a callback within the hour.
The office staff has been pleasant whenever I dealt with them. I really had no problems with my insurance so my contact was minimum.
What's really exciting, is that they are going to start a support group, within the next few months, in order to address any issues that may come up after the surgerey. I am truly looking forward to that aspect of
the program.
Having known people who had the surgery and talked about the pain, who were sick for weeks after, and who told me to reconsider, I was prepared for the worst. However, in my case, it was a great experience.
At this point, there is nothing negative that I can say. I realize that everyone's experience will be different. However, I had a great experience from my first meeting through the surgery and hospital stay. I can't say enough about both of these surgeons.
I have met Dr. Knowle's on June 19, 2002 for my first clinical. It was very informative as I learned all the pro's and con's of my surgery, RNY. She was very nice and personable well informed and listened carefully to all I shared with her. I am suppose to be scheduled for surgery with Dr. Grant in August or September 2002. I am excited and can hardly wait, I also have a great family to support me when I come home. As far as the hospital and staff I have met so far, they are wonderful and very caring. I would highly recomend Dr. Grant/Dr. Knowel's and the staff at Duke University Hospital.

My first impression of Dr. Grant was one of no-nonsense and concern. He tells it like it is and doesn't pressure. I liked him very much and he made me feel very comfortable. The staff has been great so far. I bugged them for an appointment and they never lost patience with me. Dr. Grant told me of all the risks and benefits. The insurance rep was extremely knowledgeable and made me feel like it would be a breeze with Cigna-HMO. It was-She called me 3 days after my appointment with the approval. The hardest part has been the wait. I contacted Dr. Grants office at the end of Jan 2002 and have my surgery date June-3rd.
I really enjoyed having Dr. Grant as my surgeon. He had a great sense of humor as well as being very serious. His office/clinic is part of the Duke University Medical Center and I knew I would be in excellent hands. All of the staff there are great. If I had to do it all over again I would choose him in a minute.
I had to be open because his weight limit for lap is 380. He has a nutritionist on staff and after your first few visits with him post-op you're then turned over to his Internist/assistant Dr. Knowles.
Before surgery or being accepted you have to attend a group to discuss the surgery, the benefits, the risks, after surgery diet, how long you will be coming back to the office for follow-up after surgery, etc.
All I can say is Dr. Grant is an excellent surgeon and is really easy to talk to. He is very straight forward and tells it like it is and doesn't sugar coat anything.
Since Duke Hospital is one of the leading hospitals in the U.S. I knew I would be in excellent hands.
The only negative thing about my stay at Duke had nothing to do with the Dr. or Nurses....it was the Interns that took me down to radiology for my Barium swallow. They were young and kind of careless and bumped into anything that was in the hallways, which caused some pain. Other than that my stay at Duke was wonderful...the best Nursing staff in the world.
Dr. Grant is great for those of you who are considering him for the surgery.
Dr. Grant and Dr. Knowles are both very nice, caring and intelligent physicians. Dr. Grant is so knowledgeable about bariatric surgery and has lots of experience. His staff are well trained and couldn't be nicer. Everyone was so supportive. The risks were fully explained. I would highly recommend the program at Duke to anyone interested.
