I met both DR. Grant and DR. McMahon yesterday, Feb 20th and they are wonderful! I truly believe that they care about their patients and want this surgery to be very succesful for each patient. At first when the meeting started they seemed quite clinical and impersonal but that changed quickly. They were very infromative and answered every single question I had. Any concerns I had about WLS were put to rest after meeting with them and discussing the realistic results I could expect from this procedure. They really emphasize the importance of a good after care program, which Duke provides. They were very forthcoming with all the risks involved. I am very pleased with my choice of surgeons. I am more excited about WLS now more than ever! Please note that these comments are all based on my opinion alone but as a first impression, they made a great one.

I have been very satisfied with Dr. Grant and the Duke program. It has taken awhile to gather and process all information. I sent my initial application in July, 2002. My first appointment was in September, and my second appointment was in October. Request for precertification was finally sent January 30, 2003. On February 12 the request was denied by my insurance company (PCHP, Lynchburg, VA).

I fell in love with Dr. Grant! He was great! He came in every night and held my hand and asked me and my Sister and Husband if we had any questions. He would sit down and listen!

Drs. Grant and Mcmahan are extremely nice gentlemen. They are great surgeons as well or they would not be at Duke. The office staff has been super nice and concerned. They are set up for the super obese and are very compassionate. The insurance specialist has a baby boy on Christmas day, does that also tell you something?
I have talked to several of their patients and all agree that these doctors and their staff are wonderful. They have a new support group, a nutricianist and a psychologist in the clinic as well. I rate this clinic on a scale of 1-10 an 11.

I liked Dr. Grant and his staff at the Duke Weight Loss Surgery Center (www.weightlosssurgery.us)--friendly, but direct. I'd give them high marks all around.

Dr'sd Grant and McMahan will be operating on me. I met them in an inormal conference as part of the journey through the Duke Univ Hosp Weight Loss Surgery program. They are awesome! They extensively went over the surgery and the risks then opened the floor for questions. There was a small enough group that we were all able to interact and they both treated everyone like we were people, not subjects! They put no time limit on the session as to include everyone with no time constraints. I really feel like they are here for ME(the individual). The offices are in a hospital setting with all the necessary accomidations needed. They have a comprehensive aftercare program that they are constantly looking to improve and seem educated in the latest statistics and willing to learn and change things as new info is available. Their knowledge, ability, and bedside manor are all supurb. The only negative experience I had was the hospital staff performing pre op tests-not staff directly involved in the WLS program- needs a little training in skills with the obese.

My first impression was, here's a doctor with compassion and genuinely concerned. I first met him over lunch with "Grant's Groupies", as we call ourselves. There were more than a dozen of us around the table, talking and eating. He was on one end and I on the other. When it was time to go, I said my good byes and went my way, but he made it a point to hurry to stop me as he said that he "wanted to personally greet me and introduce himself." That meant more to me than words could express. I've had many doctors, but this is by far the best gesture. I also want to add, that he surprisingly paid for everyone's lunch that day. Dr Grant has continually expressed concern and passionate about his work. It's clear that I'd recommend him to anyone who desires a competent physician with impeciable bedside manner.

I really enjoyed meeting Dr. Grant. He and Dr. McMahon have a fairly new practice (~2yrs) and are branching out into providing other services (on-staff psychologist, etc). Drs. Grant & McMahon seem very thorough and willing to spend as much time with their patients as needed. The office staff seem a bit overworked, but they are nice. Beth, the insurance prime, is very helpful.

My 1st impression of Dr. Grant was that he was professional, but yet personable. He took the time to answer my questions without me feeling ignorant or he was in a rush. He answered everything and gave me time to make sure I did not have any additional questions. He is personable enough to where he makes you feel comfortable to ask him anything personal, regarding the risks (which he explained), regarding expectations, etc. before making such a life changing decision. Now that I am post-op I have found him and his staff to be just as professional and nice as they were when I was in the consultation phase. He has another surgeon that works with him now (McMahon) and he is very professional and personable also. I felt like I was in good hands with the both of them and it calmed my nerves quite a bit before the surgery. During the surgery he was courteous and nice to my family and answered any questions they had also. I feel anyone that chose him as a surgeon would be well taken care of because he has the surgical competence and also a personable bedside manner.
