I met Dr. Grant last week for my initial consultation with him and his staff at Duke Hospital. He and his staff are very dedicated, compassionate people. I found Dr. Grant to be a good listener and one who seemed to be interested in the illnesses that have come from my obesity. I am really looking forward to getting approval from the insurance company for my surgery. I have confidence that Dr. Grant will do everything he can to make this a smooth procedure for me. I was very impressed that he did not promote WLS because he wanted me to make this decision for myself. He went over all of the risks and complication involved with the surgery and I made the decision to proceed. I think he is top notch and has a beautiful personality - very charming.

I liked Dr. Grant immediately. He is straight forward, direct and compassionate to obese people. I have realized that for me he has been thorough and considerate. I love his new associate, Dr. Knowles, who is the medical follow-up post surgury contact and a dietation also. She is great and so committed. All they need is a good psychologist to strengthen the program. They are all so busy, that is not comfortable but there is so much investigation going on by people considering surgery that they are really time constrained. The aftercare program is strong. I really like that I have a doctor to follow me for at least a year post surgery, and not a surgeon! For sure they address the surgical risks, very very strongly. I would rate this team very high and I believe I have a very competent, considerate surgeon and great support.

Dr. Grant is a very nice, caring and intelligent man. He is so knowledgeable about bariatric surgery and has lots of experience. His staff are well trained and couldn't be nicer. Everyone was so supportive. The risks were fully explained. I would highly recommend the program at Duke to anyone interested.

Dr. Grant is a very positive, energetic physician. He has been very supportive in my weight loss journey. His office staff has been very helpful.

I will be returning to Dr. Grant next week for my 3-week check up. He and his nutritionist will meet with me at that time to go over the next step of my foods. I am currently on a liquid diet.

Dr. Grant's overview of the surgery, risks and bedside manner were great. I would recommend him to anyone.

The staff at Duke University Medical Center were very encouraging and quickly took care of any needs that arose during my hospital stay.

Because I was seeking treatment about 8 hours from home - Dr. Grant called me after reviewing my initial intake form before my first visit was scheduled. During this conversation and my initial visit, I found him to be caring, direct, down to earth and genuinely concerned. The rest of his team was also wonderful. Within 60 days, I had a surgery date which was December 7 at my election.

He was equally wonderful at my pre-op visit and the day of surgery. He was very clear as to risks of surgery and chances of successfully doing the procedure by endoscopy.

On 12/7, he successfully did both the Roux en Y and removed my gallbladder by 'scope.
Although Duke is a teaching hospital and I saw surgical residents early each morning, I also saw him personally each afternoon. My pain was well controlled and I was walking the halls the day after surgery. Before I left the hospital (Discharged Monday 12/10) I saw the dietician who works with him and the medical doctor who also follows his patients (Dr. Knowles - MD with Nutrition training)

While Dr. Grant's does not have his own post-op support group, ( I live too far away to participate in it even if he had one) I've found his after care thus far to be wonderful. I've found a support group locally where I live.

If you are not ready for directness, Dr. Grant is probably not for you, but I think he's just what I needed. My experience with him is that he doesn't mince his words with respect to the risks, your responsibilities post-op, etc. I liked his directness as this was a very serious decision for me.

I would tell every body about Dr. Grant. He is a very caring Dr. He will talk to you as lond as you need him to and he will make sure you are comfortable about having this surgery. His staff is very nice. I think they would do anything they could to help you out with what you needed them to. Beth is very good about returning you calls and emails. If you are thinking about going to Dr, Grant it is a all day thing. Mostly sitting and waiting. But that is like everywhere you go just take a freind or alot of reading stuff. Dr. Grant gives you a a pamplet that is very informative. It tells you what uyou need to do before and during and after the surgery. I learn alot from that. I wasn't as nervous as I thought I was going to be. Dr Grant has you in a group section your frist meeting with him you get to ask hims what ever you like and he will answer them without betting around the bush. Myself I think Dr, Grant and his staff are great they made my stay at the hospital a good experience.

Dr. Grant is a wonderful Doctor. His manor is VERY jovial and he has a wonderful humor about him. However, when it is time to get down to serious business, he is all that, BUISNESS. He lays out all the risks, hides nothing, and is forward about everything. He even answers his own phone at his office, that impresses me the most. He is a Doctor that will answer his own phone. His staff is helpfull and is suportive of you as a person and as a patient. His aftercare program is great and He is very adimant about aftercare and folowup visits. Overall I would rate Dr Grant a top notch Doctor and a great person. His surgical competence is on par with his bedside manner. I would recomend Dr Grant to any one. The only problem with Doctor Grant that I have is, he is in Durham, im in the Western part of the State, its a four to six hour drive to go to the doctors office.

My first impression of Dr. Grant was that he was very professional. He made no promises to me and told me this surgery is just a stepping stone towards my weight loss. His office staff couldn't have been kinder to me. Beth Mallard was wonderful helping getting me approved through my insurance and Wendy his nutritionalist was extremely informative.
The surgery itself was quite painful. I had the open RY and had problems keeping my O2 levels up. Dr. Grant came to check on me everyday, my food intake, and my progress. His follow-up care is very important to him. He makes sure you're not losing too fast and eating properly. I am very happy with him and thank him for basically giving me my life back.

I found Dr. Grant to be a very compassionate, and considerate; and no I do not feel that my impression has changed from consultation date through surgery date.

Dr. Grant's staff were always pleasant and very helpful to me.

I can't say that I dislike anything about Dr. Grant; and I think that future patients need to know that he is well respected in his field, and more than that, he is sincere about his desire to help the morbidly obese.

Aftercare is very much a concern of his, and his follow through and that of his staff is very thorough; and yes his aftercare program is very structured.

All risks of surgery were addressed thoroughly by Dr. Grant; and I would rate him and his staff as excellent. His surgical competence and his bedside manner are both excellent.

Dr. Grant is a very knowlegable and experienced bariatric surgeon. In speaking to him, I found out that he has been involved with various bariatric techniques since the late 1970s! He has used the information from the past 20 plus years and perfected his procedures by learning from the mistakes of others (and even fixed others' mistakes). This was very comforting to me, since experience is what I was looking for!
His staff is becoming much more busy and probably overworked, yet always were very nice and helpful to me. Beth, the "insurance queen" is fabulous! She knows her stuff! She gave me a date and I was approved in less than 2 weeks and know that would not have been posssible without her behind it all! (Thanks Beth!)
I was very impressed with Dr. Grant overall. I am not easily impressed let me say! I have worked in the medical field for 6 years and am attending nursing school. He's a great surgeon. He stresses the risks, makes sure you understand this is a huge life changing decision and stresses the importance of following diet and exercise for optimal weight loss after surgery.
I feel blessed that I found Dr. Grant!
