John P. Grant Bariatric Surgeon M.D., F.A.C.S.
my surgery was done under a grant that originally was going to be 10 ppl but ended up being 5 and 1 woman that paid for it out of her pocket. I was almost 25 yrs old at the time of my surgery. I thought very highly of Dr. Grant and he is/was everything the others have said. he however said I was a "nasty" person. not sure why doesn't really matter my particular type of surgery was not approved by the insurance/medical study anyway. i'd like to think Dr. Grant learned the most from me so that the surgeries of today are much improved with all necessary support and with a higher success rate with less complications. I had some good years and for that that i'm very grateful and thankful but I can say without any doubt that volunteering for this experimental procedure was the worse thing I have ever done in my life. we did have a communication breakdown but it was not from lack of trying on either of our parts. I think it was me not completely understanding the procedure and the after part 1 care. he is retired now but bottom line...a good man and a hell of a Dr./surgeon and I wouldn't have hesitated for him to operate on me again just not weight loss surgery. it just wasn't the right thing for me at that time. 26 yrs later my body has really paid the price not all due to the surgery directly. Thank you Dr. Grant for trying to help me and so many others!
I was very pleased the first day that I met with Dr. Grant during my one on one visit. He was kind and took his time explaining everything to me. He is the only doctor that has every made me feel like he had all of the time in the world (and he was only running about 15 minutes late, for which he apologized for).
My first impression remained true throughout the process. He was kind at the hospital (both before and after the procedure).
The only thing that he told me after the surgery that I was sensitive to is that if I felt weak it was all in my mind (I am now 4 days post op and I do not believe that). I guess some people feel weak because they are not eating very much food. I feel like I am eating too much - I am uncomfortably full.
He can't be perfect, can he? I would highly recommend him to anyone but he is no longer accepting any more patients as he is retiring at the end of the year.
Dr. John P. Grant, of Durham NC was my doctor and he was great.
His office staff, nurses and everyone that has anything to do with his office is a great delight and help in every matter.
The lady, Beth who handles the insurance is tops in her field! She is willing and able to help anyone with their insurance.
She is very pleasant and effecient in her job.
If you are interested in contacting their office, all you have to do is call them or sign up for their seminar. It is a free 2 hours seminar that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know concerning this procedure.
They stress the importance in this free seminar. After you attend this seminar, you are ready to jump up and scream that this is for you. I have 2 friends who just returned from the seminar on friday 5-13-05, and both ladies signed up to start the proceedings.
The risks, aftercare, pre-care, hospital stay, etc. is all outlined 100% plus with their office.
I give Duke Weightloss Surgery's office one of the highest ratings possible...from the receptionist at the front of the offices and to everyone else in between. I have the hightest admiration for Dr. Grant and all of his employees.
My experience was a great one so far, and only seems to be getting better!
Durham North Carolina is very fortunate to have his office there. I highly recommend their office to all of my friends who are considering weightloss surgery.
I even had given their address and web address to strangers that have heard me talking about this to others!
He is a wonderful man, very personable. My impression never changed. I went with Duke Weight Loss CLinic because of there reputation and would have been happy with any of their qualified surgeons, but was pleased as punch when I drew him. His staff is excellent and I enjoy going in each and every time. There is nothing that I don't like about Dr. Grant. He is an awesome doctor and a leader in his field. He is very caring and wants you to do well with your new tool and impresses on you the need to take care of yourself. Duke has an excellent aftercare program. All of the risks were explained to me and my group more than once I might add. I give Dr. Grant a 10 out of 10, the best in the field. His surgical competence and bedisde manner are strong and excellent and they both made a difference with me. These are however my own personal beliefs and from my own personal experience and I am not making statements about what people may experience.
I liked him immediately and still do very much. He is very caring and personable and he is a super good surgeon. He took us through each and every risk factor, what the odds were, how often it has happened in the 300+ surgeries he had done at that time (9/2003) and which ones we should actually worry about.
The other surgeons in his office are all terrific also and they work as a team - with two surgeons in the operating room for all surgeries. I really liked that idea a lot.
The office could use some work.
Overall, I would rate them highly. It is the experience and surgeon's track records which really matters, in my humble opinion, and they've got it.
