My first impression of Dr. Houston was at the seminar he gave at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, TN--I found him to be informative & a little cocky---both make a great surgeon, in my opinion...:). I had my first one-on-one meeting w/him and my husband & I left the meeting feeling like he would take care of me and do his job well. He took a great amount of time with in my pre-surgery appointment & very quickly made us feel comfortable. He was real & opened up to us about a lot of his views. We appreciated that. His office staff has been great so far. ONE MORE UPDATE: I have to tell everyone that on Monday (over 3 weeks before my surgery date), Dr. Houston called me on my cell phone to check in w/me and ask me if I had any questions. I was really impressed at the fact that he called and he was great at answering all my questions (and I had quite a few!) and made me, again, feel completely confident in his abilities & my choice! rnMARCH 17, 2009: I had my surgery & I am alive & well to type this...kudos to Dr. H!

Dr. Houston has been wonderful throughout this whole experience. When I first met Dr. Houston we discussed the Duodenal Switch vs the gastric bypass and which one would be the best for me. He gave me a lot to think about and I decided on the duodenal switch. Since my insurance approval I have had lots of questions and Dr. Houston and I have emailed several times. Today he even called me and we talked for about 20 minutes on the phone, I have never had a doctor that would do that. I know that I have made the right choice for me and I could not be happier with my choice.

Dr. Houston is very nice and tells you like it is. Sometimes I wish he would smile more, but I'm still new to him so maybe over time.rnHis office staff is wonderful. Holly and Elizabeth are so gret to talk to. They always try to answer your quesions. The dieticians are GREAT!!! I have emailed them so much to ask questions are they are very responsive.rnIf you're looking for a doctor to baby you and hold your hand this is not Dr. Houston. rnHis after surgery program is very structured and organized.rnBefore surgery Dr. Houston addresses the risks that are involved and let's you know how serious they can be.rnOverall Dr. Houston is very educated and nice. He knows his stuff! I believe Dr. Houston's surgical competence is his strong point. I highly recommend him.rnrn

My first impression of him was that he was very resonsible and seemed to really care about what my needs were. My impression didn't change over time with Dr. Houston. His office staff has been very polite, especially his front desk assistant, Elizabeth. He addressed all the risks and rewards of surgery and made sure I was completely ready for surgery before he agreed to do surgery. He can be a bit brisk at times, he is very straight to the point which I love about a Dr. but some people may find this off putting.
I didn't want to say anything about Dr. Houston until I got to know him better. He was very friendly and quite knowledgeable at our first meeting. One thing that bothered me at our first meeting was that he declared I was his patient for life and he didn't trust my PCP (whom I admire very much). But after I talked to my PCP, I realized that that is Dr. Houston's way of saying he wants to make sure his patients are taken care of since not all PCPs are aware of the post-op needs of WLS patients. At my six week follow-up appt. I was so scared he'd read me the riot act since I hadn't been very good at getting my minimum water and protein intake. He didn't! He did reiterate its importance and said I need to work harder. Sometimes he didn't let me finish my question and he'd jump ahead to where he thought I was going. I'd just let him finish and ask again. He does take the time to answer all my questions and his office staff is helpful. Centennial is a Center of Excellence so there is a support group, forum, and a structured aftercare program. Dr. Houston's Fellowship at Vanderbilt helped convince me that he \"knew his stuff\". I am pleased to have gotten both competence and caring.
Dr. Houston is a wonderful surgeon. He is very knowledgeable. He is very direct and straightforward when discussing my surgery and life after surgery. His staff are wonderful, too. There is nothing that I can say negative about Dr. Houston or his staff. I am so glad I chose to start this life changing journey with them. Dr. Houston has indeed changed my life.

I decided to have Dr. Houston to perform my surgery because what got me was his sense of humor at the seminar. Dr. Houston is very informative and straightforward, he does not \"sugar coat\". He explained to me in detail about both the Lap-band and bypass and he explained all about the risk of having this type of surgery. I initially was going to have the lap band, but after discussing my condition I decided to get the bypass and I'm glad I did. My surgery was 8/26/2008 and I have lost 52 lbs. Dr. Houston is the best.
