I first saw Dr. Houston at his seminar. He did an excellent job and answered practically every question I had thought of. My first formal meeting was two days later in his office. Dr. Houston is a very confident, inteligent surgeon. He was really attentive to my questions and concerns, and told me exactly what to expect. His nurse, Holly, is a complete sweetheart. We talked for like an hour lol. The dietician, Jill, was great as well. She provided me with a great handbook and all the essential nutritional information. I am very pleased with the group!!!
Dr Houston is a quiet well spoken confident Dr who makes sure you have all the info you need and want. He does not rush you through anything and makes you as comfortable as possible. As time went on, my confidence continued to grow. The office staff is wonderful, his nurse is always willing to help before, during and after surgery. There is nothing I liked least about the Dr or the staff. Everything went well and then continue to support me even after the surgery. The Dr is very thorough and makes sure all is taken care of for you. The Dr and the staff have a complete program put together for before, during and after care, it has help tremendously. All the risks of surgery were gone over before surgery and we discussed them again after surgery. I would rate the Dr a "10" overall. I am very pleased with the whole experience.
Both the Dr's surgical compentence and bedside manner were excellent.
5/7/04 - I've only briefly spoken with Dr. Houston at a seminar I attended in March, but I was very impressed with him. He seemed very confident and very passionate about what he does. I have also spoken to people who have had him as a surgeon or know someone who has and I've heard wonderful things. My consultation is scheduled for May 13th, so I'll know more about him after that date.
5/16/04 - Well, I had my consultation with Dr. Houston on Thursday (5/13) and was very impressed. I absolutely loved his nurse, Holly. She was so warm and friendly, not to mention accomodating. This was the first time my husband had been to the Center and his first encounter with Dr. Houston. He wasn't 100% comfortable with the details of surgery until after our meeting. He got the same feeling of confidence (not arrogance) and felt we were making the best decision for me.
He is a surgeon first and foremost, confident, capable, etc. He also has a real 'human side' that doesn't separate him from the rest of the world (no 'God' syndrome that many doctors assume). Holly, his nurse, is quite helpful and personable. The office staff at the center could benefit from customer service training. Both times I went there pre-op, I felt like I was interrupting their day when I asked for assistance. One time I left a letter from my PCP, my business card, and asked them to have their insurance person call me--got no response for 2 days and later found out she did not get the message to call me. Hmmmm.
Dr. Houston does emphasize aftercare and seems very knowledgeable about bariatric surgery.
So far, I'd rate my surgeon 9 out of 10--it's early yet!
He is a very knowledgeable man. Not afraid to answer any question I asked him. I highly reccomend him. His office assistant Holly is great. Very caring and personable.
He came to visit me before I had surgery, then went and spoke with my family. He also kept my family well informed during surgery. Very good bedside manner. He checked twice the day I had surgery, even made one visit around 8:00 that night. He also kept well informed about some complications during the surgery. In the weeks since I had surgery, Dr Houston has been very good. If I need him, I can call and talk to him about any problems. His assistant Holly is also very good about working with me. She is also glad to answer any questions or concerns I may have. I highly recomend Dr Houston to anyone considering gastric bypass surgery.
(Dr. Houston's name is pronounced "Howston.")
I met with Dr. Houston for my initial consult in August or Sept. 2003, which was shortly after he moved over from the Vanderbilt group to Cumberland Surgical Associates where the "infamous" Dr. Dyer practices. Dr.Dyer performed my husband's RNY in 8/03, but the wait is several months long for Dyer, so I chose to have a consult with Dr. Houston. At first glance, I was impressed by the doctor's pretty blue eyes. I was fairly educated about the procedure already after having attended two other surgeons' seminars, but Dr. Houston continued with his overview of the surgery as he would perform it. We discussed the subtle nuances between he and Dr. Dyer with regard to technique and so forth. When I called the office back in October 2003 to let Dr. Houston know I had not yet been approved by BCBS and that I would have to cancel my tentative surgery date, it was Dr. Houston who answered the phone. I think folks will find that they can talk to Dr. Houston on a human level and this may ease any fears they have. My surgery has finally been pre-approved and I'm pleased that Dr. Houston will be my surgeon.
Young and handsome. That was my very first impression of Dr.Houston. Didn't take very long to see how genuine he really was and still is. His concern over your health and wanting to help you is overwhelming at times. He wasn't like alot of Drs. that acted like me being fat was a weakness on my part but a disease. He gave me back my confidence, my smile, and my will to go on everyday and enjoy my life. He is one of a kind and I truly feel that I was blessed to have him as my surgeon and guardian angel. Holly is the second angel to come into my life when I met Dr. Houston. Her smile and warmth made me feel special and that I was the most important thing to her at that time and that time was not an issue and she would be with me every step of the way. When I woke up the day after surgery and saw Holly standing by my bed I thought she was an angel all dressed in white. Wasn't until a couple of days later did my husband tell me she really did walk over to see me. I cannot express the way I feel about these 2 people and the quality of life I have been given back and these 2 with me every step of the way. With all the lecturing, studying, questioning, and talking I had no questions before the surgery and after the surgery, before I could ask they were answered for me. I don't think I could ever rate Dr. Houston and Holly because I don't think some things can be rated. As far as his surgical competence I would rate him top doc.
My first impression of Dr. Houston was "Wow he has the bluest eyes" just kidding. He is on the younger side which can be a put off for some people looking into medical procedures....However I feel its what gives him the edge. This man knows what he is doing and you can tell he is very passionate about what and how he does his work. Very professional yet he cares about you the patient. I have had some insurance issues and actually went to a couple other Doctors and expierenced them and their staff. My choice and paying(if I went with what was in Network I would have no out of pocket costs)is Dr. Houston and his Staff. Hollie is the most efficient person she does a very good job. Nothing has slipped tru the cracks. She always returned my calls and followed through even when she and her children had the horrible flu. What a woman! The office is very comfortable. With all that is offered in house I will be able take care of everything with little effort. My schedual really does not allow too much running around and with the loss of weight I'll really want to be doing fun things. The aftercare program they have set in place is wonderfull. I actually have went a couple of times just so I would know what I might encounter. They are very honest people who truly care. Well, I am so looking forward to this new phase in my life and I am so glad God has sent me to this Doc. I will update after the operation. The "Great Date" is 2-2-04.
Well today is 3 days post-opp. I am having my husband update this for me. I came home yesturday, it was nice to be home. But here is how I honestly feel... Like a Mac Truck ran me over! Okay... The staff at Centennial Hospital were very kind and mostly willing to help whenever posible. I am a very private person, I have issues with pepole being in close proximity. Thank GOD for my husband who was there and still is, to do all the personal things that need to be done. I did not realize that I going to be so incapable of the little things that we take for granted every day. The only bad thing that happend was that I was allergic to the pain meds. MORPHINE, it was giving me anxiety attacks, we quickly caught that and was pescribed Dilaudid Dr. Houston checked on me several times. He was very kind and kept my husband up todate before, half way, and after surgery. Every time the nurses came to check on my incisions they all said " You must of had Dr. Houston. Everything is so nice and clean. He always does a good job." Right now I am still sore each day it is getting better, I am unconfortable from the pressure of the gas.
