I really appreciated Dr. Houston's candor during our first (and so far only) meeting. He was very straight forward about his experience to date and that the Duodenal Switch is still a learning process for him. He is learning to adapt the surgery using different techniques as he learns more about what effects the outcome results and health of his patients. Dr. Houston told me that after I have the surgery, he wants me to consider him my "belly doctor." I like that a lot. One of the reasons I chose him is because I've read what others have said about his after care, that he has an attitude of continuing commitment to his patients. That's important to me. If I'm going to have this surgery for the rest of my life, I want a doctor in my life that understands what that means. With that in mind, I also liked that Dr. Houston is relatively young. I don't think he's going to retire a year from now or even 10 years from now. He can continue to be my "belly doctor" for years to come. Who better to know the specifics of my insides than the surgeon who made them that way? And, I think that Dr. Houston has a stable practice (meaning I believe he will stay where he is working at the surgical center he's at for a long time - there is another doctor out there that this is in direct contrast to). Him staying put and remaining stable means I can continue to have access to him and be an active patient of his for years to come. These things were all a part of my consideration.

I just wanted to add, for anyone looking to have surgery, the Centennial Center for the Treatment of Obesity seems to be an excellent place to go. The staff were VERY communicative with me while working with me to get all the documentation I needed to get approved by insurance. They were GREAT! And, the center's success rates are better than the national average. This place stresses aftercare. They stress eating real food (not shakes). Also, the center's mortality and complication rates are also better than the national averages. They are serious about making sure that they are one of the best places to go and they actively work to maintain that status.

My journey started with finding out what type of surgery I was interested in. After a lot of research, I chose Dr.H., as he was one of two in Nashville who perform the Duodenal Switch. My first impression of him was on consult and I thought he was a confident physician, perhaps bordering on conceited. As a surgeon, the man is extremely skilled, with a willingness to always learn more. This changed my opinion of him to being appropriately confident because a wise man is always seeking more knowledge and experience, and he is a wise man.
If you are Super Morbidly Obese, then you are quite familiar with having to spend time in a lot of doctor offices. His staff, Holly and Elizabeth have changed my overall view of how physician offices are ran. They are the most efficient, prompt, and caring staff I have ever encountered. I worked for a group of surgeons at one point in my life and never witnessed anything like this office. These ladies have it down pat.
Having weight loss surgery is a major, life changing decision. It is something that Dr. Houston and his staff do not take lightly. They realize the importance of aftercare and work ardently to make sure that each and every patient is cared for.
Trust is the most important part of ANY relationship, especially between a physician and their patient.
You can trust Dr. Houston. He will do everything in his power to provide premium, unsurpassed care, in and out of the operating room.

I want to first say that I went to numerous seminars, read every booklet, studied every website, but once I sat in on Dr. Hugh Houston at Centennial that night in April, I knew I had found not only the hospital for me but the surgeon!!
I immediately submitted my paperwork to proceed.
Dr. Houston made me feel at ease from our first meeting, I am now 11 days post op and know for fact I have made the right decision.
He is easy to talk to, he never rushes me and if my husband or I either one have a question he takes the time to answer us.
He has a waiting list, but in my opinion he is so worth it!
Everyone in his office is just as friendly, and if you have any concerns or questions they will help you. Most of his staff are weight loss patients as well, so they have " been there".
If you are looking for a surgeon, I highly suggest Dr. Houston!!

I just wanted to say that Dr. Hugh Houston is an ANGEL. He listened to all of my concerns and questions. He answered every question I had and continues to do so. I had RYGB on April 20, 2010. I just want to say "Thankyou" to Dr. Houston from the bottom of my heart for helping me get my life back.

I had RNY surgery in 2004 and lost about 50 pounds very quickly. I also regained it all and was about to give up when I heard about the revision alternatives that are available.

I was very impressed with Dr Houston on my initial visit over the length of time he spent talking with me, answering all of my questions and making sure I understood the answers. Friendly and non-judgemental, very informative and he insisted that I do my own research on the procedure I wanted before he'd agree to do it.

Two weeks later he recognized me while I was sitting in the waiting area at the hospital while she had a scope done by him. He knew who I was, what procedure I was having and also when.

I just had my one week post-op visit (down 10 pounds!) where I told him I was looking forward to some tomato soup since I'm starting stage 2 today. He says, no no no! Protein shakes and water only for about a week and then on to stage 3. No more cream soups of any kind, not a good protein source and the sodium is too high.

He gets a 10 rating from me, I'm happy with him.

Dr. Houston is the best of the best. He seemed a bit cocky at first but as I began to know him he has children as do I and he really grew on me. His staff is magnificiant!!! Dr. Houston expects you to follow the rules to the nose or dont bother. He follows me frequently or by phone. Dr. Houston made it very clear to me my choices and made me comfortable asking lots of questions. I rate my Dr. 10+++++. I would and have trusted my life with my Dr. Houston!!!!

I chose Dr Houston because he just happened to be the Dr that led the informational seminar I attended when I first was thinking about having the surgery.

He seemed very competent, confident, and I liked that. But most of all, I liked that he backed up what he had to say with facts and statistics.

The office at the Centennial Bariatric Center were and have been great from the beginning. They did everything involved with my insurance, setup appointments, followed up with me to make sure I had the info I needed. They even make you sign a form stating that you will attend at least one support group each month. I really like the fact that they don't just bring you in, cut on you, then kick you out the door.

Dr Houston doesn't have the greatest bedside manner, but that didn't really bother me. I like that he is straightforward and very confident in his abilities as a surgeon.

Dr Houston can be a little "dry", but I have confidence in his skills and ability. I would recommend him.

I MET DR HOUSTON FOR THE PREOP INTERVIEW. HE WAS VERY PERSONABLE/PROFESSIONAL. HE DISCUSSED IN SIMPLE TERMS THE RISKS AND BENEFITS OF SURGERY. HE ALSO DISCUSSED THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE LAPBAND AND REALIZE BAND. THEN DR HOUSTON GAVE ME THE OPTION TO CHOOSE WHICH BAND I PREFER. THE OFFICE STAFF ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. THEY GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO MAKE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND PROMPTLY RETURN ALL CALLS.
I WOULD RECOMMEND DR HOUSTON TO ANYONE SINCE HE IS SKILLED WITH ALL WLS.
