Very caring, open about the procedure. After 2nd postop visit, remains caring and suportive. All office staff are nice, very accomodating. Nothing in least I like about him. He won't make you stay in San Diego for the entire week post op, just a couple of days. Very much expects after care to be done, I see him and my regular PCP on regular basis. Yes, a very structered after-care program. 10/10. Both bedside manner and surgical expertise is great. Sorry, I have nothing negative to say, I'm a nurse so I'm realistic about how surgeons are. I was actually surprised at the caring attitude he has, most surgeons don't. If your site wants me to say something bad about him, tough, I have nothing negative to say.
Dr. Rumsey seems to be a very confident and caring doctor. He explained everything very thoroughly and even drew diagrams. Before my journey started and i researched a few doctors on this site, i had my mind set on one, but after my orientation at Pacific Bariatric, i was happy with two of the doctors. Then when they told me that Dr. Rumsey was the first doctor who would be able to see me, i accepted. He was a very warm and gentle man and i couldn't have felt more comfortable with my decision after meeting with him! The staff has always been polite, friendly and extremely helpful.
My first impression of Dr. Rumsey was great. I was waiting for him in an exam room when I heard him talking to another patient in the hallway. She was wanting to have surgery but had some issues she needed to deal with first. He was quite matter of fact when he told her that the choice was hers, she could deal with her issues and have surgery, or not deal with them and not have surgery. My impression of him over time stayed the same. He was quite straight forward, which I appreciate in a physician. The office staff at Pacific Bariatric in San Diego is wonderful. Many of the staff have had surgery themselves, which is helpful to a patient. He addressed the risks of surgery very honestly, as well as the risks of NOT having surgery. Overall I would rate him as a great surgeon for this type of procedure. I think part of the reason I had a good experience with him is that I did what I was supposed to do as well. I saw him get a little rough with a woman with whom I shared a room at the hospital, but she was refusing to try to get up and walk after surgery and he was quite plain with her that she was not going to recover as well as I was doing if she did not try to do her part. The only problem I had at all with him was that other people who had surgery the same date as me got out of the hospital early in the morning on their departure date, and I was still there at 2:00 in the afternoon because he had not come to the hospital yet to release his patients. There were people in the hospital with me who were already home by the time I even saw him. Other than that, my experience was great. I think the nursing staff at Mercy Scripps were the best. They were so supportive and encouraging, which made the entire experience so much easier.
My surgeon was absolutely the best. My first impression of him was that he was a very intelligent, personable man. He was insistent that I lose weight and begin exercise and protein shakes before surgery, but I know that is because he wants me to be in the best condition possible for surgery. I had open RNY and he did a wonderful job. I had no complications and my incision is beautiful. And he is not stingy with pain medicine -- I had a morphine PCA and Toradol around the clock. My pain level was never >3 during my hospital stay. I used liquid Vicodin for 1 day after discharge and then did not need anything else (and I have a VERY low pain tolerance). Dr. Rumsey listened to my concerns, he realizes that I know my body better than anyone. I was so well prepared for this surgery. I knew exactly what would happen, what was expected of me, what things to watch for and what to expect in my care. We had a 4 hr pre-op teaching class. We talked to someone from the support group who was post op, an anesthesiologist, a nurse who fitted us for abdominal binders and answered questions about the hospital and nursing care, an RT who taught us how to use our incentive spirometers, a social worker and a nutritionist. Dr. Rumsey's group has such a thorough and organized program. I felt safe, prepared and totally supported. I had some pain behind my sternum 1 1/2 weeks out and the surgeon on call was so available for me, and for the ER dr. Dr. Rumsey's surgical competence and bedside manner and both excellent. I am getting top notch care and I am so thankful!!
When I first met Dr. Rumsey I wasn't too sure of him. He seemed nice, but I have a fear of doctors. He was strict. His staff was nice. Now when I was in the hopital I seen how caring he really is. He would hold my hand while talking and he didn't rush me out of the hospital. He involved me in the decisions he made. He really wants you to stick to the plan. He told me about the risks of surgery and makes you get up and walk on the plane. I would highly recommend him. I think he is a very nice man. One problem I ran into in San Diego is with Southwest. No matter what- get two seats so they don't humiliate you like they did to me.
Dr. Rumsey was great from the start. He is very friendly and very professional. He really cares about his patients. The office staff were equally friendly and professional. Dr. Rumsey stresses that you follow the protocol so that no complications arise. He is very personable. He even wanted to meet my kids when they came with me to my 1 month post op visit. He's very honest about the risks of the surgery, but then reassures you by sharing the statistical information for Pacific Bariatric. What little worries I had about complications were alleviated by Dr. Rumsey. If I had to do again, I would choose Dr. Rumsey. He had both surgical competence and great bedside manner. This was my own personal experience with Dr. Rumsey.
