The first time I seen Dr. Coates was at the orientation. I thought he was really down to earth and a neat person. My impression stayed the same and the more I got to know him the more I liked and trusted him. His office staff was always very nice and they were always willing to help. The only thing I didn't like about Dr.Coates is I wasn't real clear on what to eat after going home. I felt like after surgery I was on my own. He says he really emphasizes aftercare but they only wanted to see me 1 week after leaving the hospital, then one month, and I'm not sure how many more times I'll see them. Dr. Coates was up front with all the risks but also made me feel comfortable because I asked how many surgeries he had completed and how many deaths there was. They informed me that he had done over 800 cases and only had 1 death and the person who died wasn't taking vitamins and following post-op instructions. Overall I really like Dr. Coates and I would recommend him to anyone.

I met Dr. Coates at an informational seminar on 4/20/04 and loved how knowledgeable he was about the surgery. He easily answered questions and never had to second guess his answers. Due to his confidence I requested him as my surgeon when I saw my PCP to request the surgery. My surgery was on 8/3/04 and I had no complications at all. Dr. Coates did a wonderful job on me and I couldn't be happier with the surgery! I reccomend him to anyone who is interested in the surgery.

Getting in to see Dr. Coates himself is NOT an easy task, but when you do it's worth it! He takes his time, never makes you feel rushed and explains everything in detail. He has a wonderful "bedside manner" and is just a very genuine person.
His PA's on the other hand left a VERY bad impression with me. In the future I will not agree to see any one of them.

He is very calm, professional and has a gentle spirit. He is thorough in his explanation of the surgery, it's benefits and the possible complications. I left the office excited and hopeful for my future.

My experience with Sonia in the office was disappointing prior to surgery. It felt like she dropped the ball several times. I do realize it was a hectic period for the office staff as they moved from Manteca to Modesto during this time period. However, after surgery, she was much more helpful. She proved to be a great help in the first three months post-op time when I had some problems with malabsortion of vitamins B1 and B12 and dehydration. I came to appreciate her competence and helpfulness.

I came home from the hospital yesterday after having the lap RNY surgery. I have great confidence in Dr. Coirin. He emphsizes a life-long commitment to after-care. I believe Dr. Coirin has the best reputation for bariatric surgery in our Central Valley of California. Dr. Coirin has a kind warm manner. I appreciated that he didn't speak down to me and took the time to carefully answer my questions. He emphasizes the important of life long commitment to healthy life choices. They have a thorough aftercare program.

My first impression is he really knows his stuff and is quite patient. His office staff is friendly and so warm! He is a calming person who is more than happy to talk with about this surgery. He explains the surgery and risks thoroughly and without hesitation. Surgical competence and bedside manner are pretty neck and neck for me. His laugh is the best...such a great one and really makes me giggle and smile. Good, hearty laugh. I trust him implicitly with this surgery I'm about to have. Thanks buddy for my new life ahead of me...you've given me a great tool and new lease on life!

never met until surgery day he was the dr
my family dr suggested i go to.
After I met him and after my surgery I have
spoken to him on the phone he is a nice man
I was concerned that I had not met him before
but after speaking to his other patients they said he is great. Although I can say his physicians asst don is wonderful !!
His staff are all very nice and have helped
me in everyway that they can . I can not say
I didnt like something when I barly know him.
Dr. Coates is a very busy dr. but if you want to speak only to him he has no problem with this. Yes aftercare is essentcial first
visit after surgery one week then at four weeks and every six weeks until one year.
I was in seminars w/dr coates associate who
showed the proceedure on slides and went thru
it step by step. previous patients shared their stories and the seminar was about three and a half hours.
I can only say he was great to me .
surgical competence but both would be great!

Actually, My first impression of Dr. Coates was great! I saw him at the seminar and I liked that he gets right down to business, no sugar coating or messing around. His staff is great, although the wait is long due to the fact that he's the only surgeon around that does the surgery. One thing you should know is not to expect to see him when you visit the office. He has very capable PA's that work for him and do his daily checkups...he is soooo busy doing surgery, he doesn't have time to do them. I am very happy that chose Dr. Coates for my surgery.

Dr Coirin is awesome. Hes very softspoken, and extremely knowledgeable. I was very impressed to find out that he and his partner Dr Coates studied under Dr Whittgrove who devised this particular surgery. He made me feel very at ease, and reassured that everything should go smoothly. I was also very impressed with thier statistics. They have a very low rate of complications so you know they are awesome!
His office staff simply ROCKS. JSonja and Karen are the most awesome thing ever. She tells you like it is, but never lets you get scared. So far my experience with them all has been nothing but perfect and smooth.

POST OP REMARKS: Dr Coirin is truly the King of Laprascopy!! My incisions are all so small they look like my cat got me with a claw!!! He is very sensative as well, and takes the time each morning and before surgery to talk to you to make sure you arent in pain and that your head is in the right spot! PLUS the radiology doc said my little pouch is so perfect when he saw it on the films, even HE was impressed!!!!!!!
Susan the coordinator is awesome as well. You can always feel how much she cares for each and every patient, and shes always there when I need to ask a hundred questions, no matter how busy she is!

I liked dr.Coates.Dr.Coates,is a very caring surgeon. He cares about your health, and you as an individual. The office staff of Dr.Coates is friendly. However, they do get a little backed up in the office sometimes.I made the right choice with Dr.Coates being my surgeon. If you do choose Dr.Coates, please be patient with his office staff. They are good people, but they are also human. The office staff, and the assistants all made me comfortable with the process of gastric bypass surgery,results,etc.Dr.Coates bedside manner, and surgical competence is excellent.I would recommend Dr.Coates to anyone, anytime.

I was actually referred by a friend to Dr. Coates and his seminar. Instead, Dr. Coirin was giving the seminar on that night, and it didn't matter to me who did my surgery. Everyone present had to fill out forms and put them in the basket belonging to the doctor of his or her choice. Dr. Coates' basket was overflowing with forms, so I stuck my form in Dr. Coirin's basket, in hopes of getting in sooner.
I honestly would pick either doctor. They seem like a perfect team, anyway. I have complete confidence in their ability to do the job, and I believe Coirin will be humane when it comes to pain. I have horrible back spasms and have no earthly idea how I am supposed to withstand the excruciating pain before I'm wheeled into surgery, since I cannot take a pain pill 4 hours before surgery. I am PRAYING that any shot of pain killer can be given to me before the surgery (as I was given 2 shots of demerol before a previous surgery immediately before being put under anesthesia - without any complications). Funny, I'm not afraid of dying on the table... just scared to death that my pain needs will not be met. I'm hoping Coirin will take into consideration my history of intense pain management. My orthopedist, who referred me to a pain specialist, said that gastric bypass surgery will alleviate most of the horrible pain once the extra weight is taken off of my lower back. I am looking forward to much brighter days in the future (prescription bottles in the trash - ha ha). I thank God for answering my prayers for a pain free life. Coirin seems compassionate enough to adequately yet safely manage my pre and post op pain.
