Central California Bariatric Surgery Bariatric Center
I have had Dr Coirin for two years with my lap band and have now revised to RNY. He is a great Dr. very caring and takes very good care of his patients. He has a great name around the hospital . I heard several good comments about him. I also had another appointment with a new PCP and when I told him I was under Dr Coirins care he told me many years ago he worked with him with some teaching. I trust him totally.

I had bypass surgery by Antonio Coirin in Sept 2007. His staff was very helpful and pleasant during all visits. I didn't meet Dr Coirin until 15 minutes prior to going into surgery and saw him for 2 mins after the surgery on the day he released me to go home. Even though I didn't have that much contact with the Dr himself, I would say during my brief encounters he was very competent and had a good bedside manner. Loved his smile! I really loved the informational "Bari Bible" provided by the Dr and referred to often during the process. Aftercare importance was emphasized throughout the entire process. There was no real "aftercare program" offered by the office, but they do stress the importance of finding a support group and making sure to get check ups with the Dr including blood work. I'm celebrating my 4th anniversary this month, having a total weight loss of 183 pounds within the first 12 months. I am 5'7" tall and I started at my highest weight of 320+ pounds. I lost 183 pounds. I went from a size 30/32 to a size 8 in less than a years time. I have had no problems keeping the weight off. I believe that it is because I understood from the beginning that the Dr would be fixing my stomach, but I had to fix my head. I would recommend Dr Coirin for anyone considering the surgery.
Well Although I am very happy with my surgery, and everything went fabulous & my hospital stay at Memorial was great...I am VERY dissappointed that I still have yet to meet Dr. Coates! I understand he is a busy man...I just figured I would have met him at least once by now. I requested to see him many times while I was in the hospital and said I only wanted to thank him...and never got to see him! But everything has been great and his office staff and the bariatric program he works through is awesome! If I never get to meet you...THANK YOU INVISABLE MAN DR. COATES! :o)
Dr. Coates was wonderful, I was very nervous before surgery and he was very calming and encouraging. His office staff are all nice and helpful. I have called the office a couple of times with questions and they are always prompt to respond and helpful.
There is not a pre-op consultation before surgery and that made me nervous, that would be my only complaint. Because I was so nervous, I am alergic to several medications, I did meet with him before surgery.
The after care was with the P.A. and she is very informitive. At every appointment questions are asked to make sure I am following the post-op guide lines. In addition I attended pre-and post op nutrition classes that were helpful durring each phase. Dr. Coates office has a program that sets you up to succeed. Phone numbers for the office, R.D., nutition center and his P.A. are made available on several appontments and reminders about all the available literature is also made available. Consistant Lab work at every appt. and a stuctured appt. follow up schedule for the first year.
I would rate Dr. Coates and his staff as excellent. He was not the only surgeon that I consulted. I started out with a different insurance and surgeon. My insurance changing and going to Dr. Coates was a Bleessing!

THE SURGERY SAVE MY LIFE!! I think the surgery is a decision that someone should really do the homework and know all the risk and negatives. The positives are pretty obvious. As far as surgeons Dr Coirine was concerned about my surgery and that is what I wanted. I wasnt there to make a friend but he was a nice friendly person. His staff is remarkale especially Sonya. She seemed to be be able to manipulate the inurace bologna which in 2005 notorious when it came to bariatrics. The entire team was very responsive to my needs, they had ample amount of resources which they made sure I was aware of. Their was ideally timed classes and milestone check ups. I am very glad that my Primary Care Dr referred his office.
I met Dr. Coates at the Gastric Bypass seminar and though that he was very informative and knew his stuff. I didn't see him after, but I know he was the one who did my surgery because he talked to my husband after. lol! I wish I would of been able to talk to him more, but I know he is excellent at what he does and I felt very confident that I was in good hands. The one thing my husband can say about Dr. Coates is that he has the softest hands he has ever felt! lol! In all seriousness Dr. Coates did answer all my questions during the seminar and has done very well with other people that I know that have had the procedure. Dr. Coates makes sure to emphasize the importance of after care and risks. This doctor knows his numbers and can tell you anything you need to know about having Gastric Bypass and what to expect. I say that he is an excellent Doctor, but almost like the Wizard of Oz..no one sees him, but all in all he's a great Doctor. His practitioners and staff are great and take very good care of you. Memorial hospital is awesome as well.
I was very lucky because I got to meet Dr. Coates at my pre-op appointment. He was very kind, very thorough, and treated me like a person rather than just a patient.
The day of surgery, he was encouraging and supportive, and helped to put me at ease in the OR by joking around with me and the nurses.
He visited me twice while I was in the hospital, and was very positive and encouraging then, too. I feel like I made a really good choice with Dr. Coates.
Since my surgery, I've had to have my gall bladder removed. Dr. Coates was, again, very thorough and kind. He explained the procedure to us, even drew a diagram, and spoke with my family afterward, showing them a picture of my gall bladder full of stones. I just can't say enough good things about Dr. Coates.
I really like Dr. Coates personality, and he was very down to earth. I did not get to meet him til the day of surgery, but I was immediately assured that I was in good hands. His office staff was great!! Very nice and always very informative!! Dr. Coates seems very dedicated to my after-care and has shown me a "genuine" interest in my best interest. He stresses to ALWAYS call if I ever needed anything, and also to attend as many support groups as I could.... I actually DID have some complications during surgery, and had to receive 4 units of blood, but I felt very safe with his judgement. He rates a 10+ on my scale!! He was very well rounded during surgery as well as with his bedside manner and aftercare!! I would recommend him to anyone interested in this surgery!!
