St. Alexius NewStart Hospital
This is BY FAR the best hospital experience I have ever had. I have had many surgeries in my life, and this hospital, and its staff, are the most caring, generous, gentle, attentive EVER. Everyone there is so helpful and considerate, and concerned about you as a patient, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hospital for your bariatric surgery experience.
I did have one day that was horrid where nursing care was concerned. They let my IV shut off and never came to turn it back on so my IV ended up closing up. They left me sitting in a chair for several hours and didn't come back to check on me. This was the morning after surgery. They were to have walked me at least 2 times and never did. The nurse coordinator, Kathy, has her name and number posted on the wall in the room and she was very good about taking care of the situation.
I actually enjoyed my stay. The staff was attentative, helpful and a delight to be around. The whole floor is dedicated to this type of surgery. The shower was roomy, I had a private room w/ a sleeper sofa and there is a lounge with a bird sanctuary. I brought magazines to read but never had to use them.
My biggest complaints are, that one of the nurses didn't know how to set oxygen levels with a mask and I was gasping for air and this caused me to get pnemonia. There was also 2 nurses the were awful one was a RN and she was so hateful and there was a CNA that was very lazy, didn't want to do anything for anyone.
I was told my surgery was at 8:30am and to be there at 6:30am. I had the letter for written confirmation. When I arrived they sat me in a corner, sent my husband to the waiting room and ignored me. Around 7:30am I started questioning the staff why? When they checked, they said their list said I wasn't due for surgery until 10:00am. I was not happy. I got on the phone with the people who sent me the letter. She used a condesending, defensive tone of voice and gave me a pile of lame excuses like "they wanted me there early in case the one before me got done sooner", etc. What a crock, I don't like being ignored or lied to. Even the staff in same day surgery thought it was handled poorly and that I didn't need to be there until much later. I went into surgery hacked off about that. The whole experience could have been avoided. The post operative experience was much better except for the fact that after my barium test the next morning the results were not relayed to the nursing staff right away so they wouldn't give me any ice chips. After about 2 hours I got on the phone to the Dr's office and talked to his secretary. SHE tracked down who ever needed to give the results/releases and I got it. The nursing staff refused to lift a finger to check, even though they acknowledged they don't alway get results right away.
