St. Alexius NewStart Hospital
My husband recently had surgery and I was allowed to stay in his room throughout his stay (hide-a-bed in room). I was provided with meal vouchers for the cafeteria & everyone was very helpful. They even let me stay in his regular room while he was in ICU so that I could get some rest. All staff, from nurses to housekeeping to dietary were very helpful and went out of their way to see to my comfort, as well as my husband's. In general, I was treated as a hotel guest.
I don't remember a lot, but what I know is they attended to my need as they came, I never felt neglected. It was a good overall experience. My only complaint is they didn't walk me the day after surgery...I was in ICU due to sleep apnea. Not a lot of places to walk to in ICU. Medications came on time and my needs were met. Discharge was a little rushed and discharge instructions were a little quick but I am doing well and can't complain.
When I went there for my pre-op testing things were very confusing. When it came time to go over several questions with an employee there was no place for us to go but to do it out in a hall.
There were a few workers there that were excellent, however some were mediocre, once I had a monitor beeping in the night, I used my call button over and over with no response. I was there by myself so had only the nursing staff to assist me, not once did anyone get me up to walk, one said she would later but it never happened. I would get up on my own and walk a bit in the room and did what I could along with moving my legs when in bed. I am very lucky that I was in little pain and had no complications, if I had I don't know if some there would have cared. The private room was nice.
The only suggestion I would have is the admitting process. They ask us to be there at 5:30 a.m. and no one was available to wait on us until 5:50 a.m. because no one was prepared for the people coming in and they needed to get records available when the workers arrived at 5:30 a.m. When you are on the 5th floor, pray that you get Neece as your nurses aide. She is absolutely wonderful and helps you adjust to life after your surgery. She shows genuine care and concern for you.
