Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital (COE) Hospital
Due to some unknown circumstance, my surgery, which was scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m., did not actually start until 5:00 p.m. Neither I nor my family was informed of the reason for the delay and I nervously imaginged the worst (the previous patient dying). The anestesiologist was tired of waiting and STAPLED the central line into my neck - it was so painful to remove and left a scar! What a JERK! Hosptial didn't realize I was having an adverse reaction to morphine (nausia, nonstop crying, etc.) just thought I was crazy. I finally had enough sense to stop pressing the button and told the nurse that I was in pain, but couldn't take the morphine - I was willing to take tylenol only if that is what they could offer. I felt much better when prescribed a different med, nearly 12 hours later. A nurse came in to clean my room at 1:00 a.m. The leg compression socks were too tight, cutting into my skin due to some swelling (actually broke the skin open) and the nurse was unable to find a sock that would fit. Truly not the best hospital experience. I am blessed that it was only two days long.
Everyone from the admitting office to the cleaning people were professional and caring. The floor I was on was equipped for nothing but bariatric patients. My band eroded and got infected and had to be remvoved. This was not a common problem and not many surgeons had experience with this problem. I was well cared for at St Mary's and would recommend it highly to anyone.
I would recommend St. Mary's. I had good nurses overall (just one that was grumpy). They were responsive to my needs, and even though I was in intensive care I was allowed to have visitors anytime. I had a private room and they were great about letting me get out and walk around. The food isn't great, so family wasn't happy about that, but otherwise, it is a good place to have surgery.
NURSES LEAVE YOU FOR OVER 5 HOURS AND WHEN YOU RING FOR THEM NO ONE KNOWS WHERE THEY ARE, THEY GO THROUGH YOUR SUITCASE AND PERSONAL ITEMS, I HAD TO FIND OUT WHERE THE HOSPITAL GOWNS,TOWELS AND WASH CLOTHS WERE SO I COULD STAY CLEAN THE 4 DAYS I WAS THERE. I NEVER RECEIVED A WASH BASIN , WATER PITCHER, OR CUP(STANDARD HOSPITAL ISSUE). I WAS NOT IN STABLE CONDITION AND WAS MOVED FROM A PRIVATE ROOM TO A SEMI-PRIVATE ROOM, WITH A LADY WHO KEPT THE TV ON 24/7 FOR THE LAST 2 DAYS. THE NURSES WERE MEAN AS SNAKES AND IF I EVER HAVE TO GO BACK I AM TAKING A BASE BALL BAT(LOL). I WAS MOVED BECAUSE I THREW A NURSE OUT OF MY ROOK FOR BEING 5 HOURS LATE AND EXTREMELY RUDE TO ME. YOU RARELY SAW A NURSE AND WHEN YOU DID IT WAS FOR 5 MIN UNLESS THEY WERE GOING THROUGH YOUR PERSONAL ITEMS. NEVER GO THERE IF YOU LIVE IN VA. DR. BAUTISTA IS EXCELLENT, BUT THE NURSES WOULD NOT EVEN LET MY HUSBAND COME INTO THE RECOVERY ROOM WITH ME, EVEN THOU OTHER HUSBANDS WERE ALLOWED TO GO BACK. ONE NURSE TOLD MY HUSBAND, SHE WAS 61 YRS OLD, AND HAD BEEN A RN FOR 60 YRS. NOT POSSIBLE.
