My consultation was originally scheduled for September, but I called on 08/01/02 to ask a question and they told me that a spot had opened up for the following day!!
On 08/08/02 I had my consult. It went great. EVERYONE in Dr. Duncan's office is so NICE! The waiting area has oversized chairs or chairs with no arms. It was so comfortable.
Detail of events: I had to fill out some more paperwork then they have a nurse, who takes you back and weighs you, does blood pressure & ask some questions. I was then led to a room for the group consult/session with Dr. Speights (an associate of Dr. Duncan's - she is also present during the surgery). She explained the procedure and allowed us to ask questions. There were 6 ladies in the group. She was VERY funny, professional and she made me feel so comfortable. I really liked her. After the group consult, she took each of us back individually to discuss our specific history and look at our stomach.
Next Steps: Before I left, I was given some paperwork to tell me what to do next. I scheduled my psychological evaluation for Monday Aug 12. We also needed a letter of referral from my PCP.
I haven't met Dr. Titus Duncan yet. I will meet him a few days before the surgery. But, I have heard nothing but good things about him. My Primary Care Physician is impressed with him. He knows another doctor who highly recommends Dr. Titus Duncan. Office staff is very friendly and helpful. I was impressed at the first class/visit that an Assisting Physcian was teaching the class to explain the surgery and answer questions and do a one on one exam. She explained there would be 5 docotrs in the surgery the whole time. This doctor also does Laproscopic procedure.
UPDATE 9/27/02
I went for Pre-Op yesterday and met Dr. Duncan. I know I selected the right doctor. He is wonderful.
My consultation date was on August 2, 2002. I did not meet with my actual surgeon because he was out of town at a conference. I had a group interview where another doctor explained the surgery, the risks and time involved, and common post-op procedures. His office staff was very pleasant and I am convinced that I made the right choice with this office. Right now, I am still waiting on insurance approval. I will meet the doctor then and go over all the aspects of the actual surgery.
**UPDATE: After some serious praying Monday night, I finally called Joyce yesterday and she told me that she was going to fax my information over to my insurance company today. It took so long because they had to wait on the notes to come back from dictation. Since no one else mentioned it in their profile, I will. Once you go to your consultation, the notes they take on you have to go over to Dictation and they transcribe them I guess. Then they send them back to the doctor's office, and from there they send your information to the insurance company. That process alone can take anywhere from 10-14 business days. I thought after your consult they prepared your letter and sent it to the insurance company. Not the case here. Now, I'm just waiting for insurance approval.
***UPDATE: I spoke with BCBS today and they told me that my request for this surgery was denied due to pre-exisiting. They told me that my contract has a provision that says I have to wait one year from my anniversary date for them to cover this surgery. I'm not upset because I plan to resubmit my request under my HMO. At least that way I won't have to deal with pre-existing and I won't have to pay a deductible (my PPO was $500 for the deductible alone). I already called my PCP and she does make referrals for this surgery and my appointment with her is on September 5th. Overall, I would recommend BCBS to others as I did not have to experience any stall tactics and the utilization review nurses were very helpful. My paperwork was submitted on the 14th of August and I had an answer on the 27th of August. Not bad if I do say so. Just make sure that you check that pre-exisiting, or have a back up carrier waiting.
***It has been a while since I updated. I went to see my PCP on Sept. 5th and he gave me all of my referrals. I had my psych visit on Sept. 9th. Dr. Santavicca was nice and he tried to get me to answer all of these questions about my life. My advice to anyone: DO NOT tell all of your personal business. I have a feeling that they will somehow use it to deny you. Other than that, he said that he would recommend me for the surgery. The only thing I have to do now is see my Nutritionist on Oct. 7th. Then all of my information can go the BCBS. I can't wait. It's almost next year; I just hope I don't have to wait too long to get a surgery date. Until the next time....
Dr. Duncan did surgery on me several years ago, so I already knew him.
I thought he was very professional.
It has not changed.
Very helpful. Tony has been a great help.

I think they are both great.
Well, I haven't met Dr. Duncan yet. Several of us met with Dr. Seights, a partner in his office, and she explained the surgery to all of us. She did well with that, but I had already researched this surgery very well, so nothing new for me there. During the questions phase, I felt like we were rushed, that she was in a hurry. Then she took each one of us in another room, asked a couple of questions, looked at our bellys, and again I felt like she wanted to hurry and get this process over with. Other than that, every one in that office has been great, sweet and kind, and willing to answer questions.
Dr. Seights only explained the surgery, thats all, and answered a few questions. She also said that most before and after care will be adressed by Dr. Duncan on our pre-op visit with him.
It made me wonder if maybe I was just a name for surgery, but I will hold my strong opinions until I meet Dr. Duncan himself.
9-3-02 I met with Dr. Duncan on Saturday before my surgery. He met all of us (about 25 to 30 in all) as a group and showed us a slide show, on a projection screen about the actual surgery. I liked it, It was very informative, and he answered questions from everybody afterwards. Some of the people had some questions that I didnt. Then he met with us individually if we wanted to. I did, and he ws nice, listened to me, and answered my questions. I liked him.
On the day of my surgery, he did not come to see me before, during, or after surgery. He did not come to dismiss me. I havent seen him since that Saturday at his office. No one from his office has called me to see if Im ok. I called them today to verify my post-op appointment on the 13th, after being transferred 3 times, I finally get verified. I was also told I would not see Dr. Duncan then either, I would see his nurse, then 3 weeks from then I would come back to see Dr. Duncan.
Maybe Im wrong, but my insurance company is paying him a lot of money for this surgery, and He cant even come to see me before surgery, after, dismiss me, or see him when I go back for post-op. To me, thats not right. Hope everyone else has a better experience. Good Luck, and God Bless.
WELL FIRST OF ALL I MEET HIM ONCE THAT WAS AT THE CONSULTATION WHICH HE GAVE, AND HE DID A WONDERFUL JOB I THINK HE WAS VERY HONEST ABOUT EVERYTHING I WAS IMPRESS.....AND THE STAFF IS VERY UP LIFTING AND FRIENDLY, AND HE'S A DOWN HOME GINDA GUY A PEOPLE PERSON, AND HE STRESS AFTERCARE A MUST AND YES HE DOES HAVE A PROGRAM AND HE WAS HONEST ABOUT THE SURGERY JUST LIKE WITH ANY OTHER SURGERY THE CHANCES THE PRO'S AND CON'S I WOULD RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE
