When I first met Dr. Brown I was extremely nervous but he put me right as ease with his caring voice and total honesty about the procedure and what would be expected of me. The whole staff was awesome to work with and made me feel that I had made the right decision, even though I had been researching and hem-hawing around for over a year. rn There isn't anything that the staff and Dr. Brown himself won't take the time to do in order for you to be successful, but one must remember that this isn't a miracle BUT a tool that he provides you with inorder to be successful in the weight loss and attainment of living healthy. Dr. Brown and staff were very upfront with all and any risks associated with the surgery and even with the chance of this risks I still forged ahead.rn At first I didn't think I could follow the strict diet before or after the surgery, but I did and will no negative side effects. The nutritionist and the nurse really stress how important it is to follow the program in order to see a successful journey after the surgery.rn I highly recommend Dr. Thomas Brown, Denver, to anyone considering this \"life style change\" to become healthy and yes a thinner version of oneself. Have sincerely tried to think of any negative thoughts or experience related to my surgical and follow-up experience and can honestly say - I have none. The support group is awesome and at my fingertips whenever needed. rnrnrn

'Dr Brown is very down to earth- I had no fear and was very comfortable with both him and his staff. More important than anything else he put my husband at ease about the surgery. Other than a broken hospital bed the surgery went textbook perfect (at least from my side of things). I would recommend Dr Brown (and have) to anyone interested in the surgery. I am two months out and have lost over 40# so far. Thank you

'Very quiet! I soon realized that he was just taking it all in & thinking! I feel strongly in saying that he is not just after the money! He injoys adding a Good quality ofLife to the obese people. He makes you want what is healthier. He gave me a tool to work towards this goal. Can't say that there was anything I didn't like about him and his office staff. He stressed to me to work with my team at Kaiser. Yes

Dr. Brown is an absolute down to earth man! He is the consumate professional and does wonderful work! I had the opportunity as a student to watch him perform a gastric bypass prior to having my done and would have chosen none other! I could'nt recommend a surgeon more...

My first impression of Dr. Brown was that he was very soft spoken & slightly condescending. The next time I saw him was the day of my surgery & I realized that was not true, it was more my initial nervousness that made me feel that way. (My husband really liked him from the start & didn't feel he was condescending at all) He was joking with us before we went into the operating room & really put me at ease. He really opens up the more you get to know him. He is a "shoot straight from the hip, pull no punches, tell you like it is" person. You have to really respect that. You can trust what he says. His office staff is great. I didn't deal with them too much because I went through Kaiser but the little I did work with them was great. Future patients should know that he and his staff are rated as a Bariatric Center of Excellence, I think that is really important, and quite an acheivement. He really knows what he is doing. He has an aftercare program for those who go through is office directly. I don't get to take advantage of that as I go through Kaiser but Dr. Brown himself stresses the imporance of getting the proper nutrients & protein, take your vitamins & take it slow. I would rate him a 9.5 out of 10. I think both surgical competence and bedside manner are important but bedside manner only makes you more comfortable. It's the surgical competence that gives you the confidence that you not only made the right choice in surgeon's, but in having the surgery in the first place. If your surgeon is less compentant, one might feel that the "surgery" was a mistake when the truth is that the "surgeon" was the problem. I can honestly, and quite happily say that you will absolutely not that have the problem with Dr. Brown. His credentials are top-notch and he, having performed this surgery 600+ times, knows what he is doing & will take the best care of you!

The followup program is very good. It is easy to call and ask questions. There is also nutritional support.

The surgery went fine, but I would not opt to have the surgery at Presbyterian/St. Luke's again.

I have mixed feelings about Dr. Brown. He does not seem to be a strong "people" person, but I know he is very skilled in doing this surgery.

I really enjoyed Dr Brown and his staff. I look foward to going to see them and they have been extremely supportive to me. The support groups they hold are wonderful and they really cheer me up. The clear liquid diet was very hard but now that I am 6 weeks out I can honestly say that it was so worth it. I would recommend Dr. Brown and his staff to anyone! A+

Dr. Brown has a great reputation among his Kaiser patients in Denver. He was easy to talk to and had a pleasant way about him. The morning of surgery, there was some teasing to lighten the mood, which I needed at the time. I was a bit upset not to see him on my 2 week follow-up, but the intern was fine and answered all my questions. I know he looked at my records etc. to be sure all was well.
I feel like he was very competent - I certainly haven't had any problems. As far as aftercare, Kaiser will be doing most of that, although I'm sure I'll see him at 6 months and then a year post-op.

3/9/05 Kim from Dr. Brown's office is WONDERFUL! She's checked with my insurance and told me what they would cover and what my out of pocket would be. She's also going to go over my past medical records for me to see if I need to schedule the 6 mo supervised diets or if what I've already gone through will qualify. If so, then I'll schedule the appt to meet with Dr. Brown and get this ball rolling! Since I have to drive 250 miles, this really is helpful.

4/21/05 Dr. Brown was just what I expected. From all the posts here, I really felt like I knew him already. He's very kind, competant, patient, just wonderful! My husband liked him (and that's saying a LOT!)

His office staff is great! Everyone is VERY friendly and helpful. You can tell they enjoy working there. Because I had to drive 4 hours to his office, they went out of their way to schedule everything over 2 days instead of weeks. This made for very long days but I was very glad to have it done and over with.
The nutritionist (Shannon) has established a kind of 24 hour help line. You can e-mail with any dietary questions or concerns you or any support person has regarding what is okay and what isn't. She really drew my husband in, which I REALLY appreciated because I think he's kind of overwhelmed by the whole process and this was something he could understand and felt he could help with.
As far as surgical competence vs. bedside manner, I feel both are important and with Dr. Brown, I feel I'm getting them both. His stats for surgery success are wonderful and he makes you feel safe in his hands. He has a kind way about him and I liked that.
