Dr. Paul Lin is a thoughtful, careful man and I believe that is evident in his patient care as well. He leaves no doubt that this is a serious surgery (the video he presents is very direct)and that he wants his patients to be well informed. And he gets results! I trusted him immediately.
The office staff is excellent - Kathy is always a joy to work with. Denise, the nurse practitioner who handles most after-care, is exceptional. I've been blissfully complication free, but I would never hesitate to contact them with any questions whatsoever. All the assistants I have seen in the office were especially pleasant and professional as well.
I would recommend this practice to anyone having or considering WLS and commend these fine people to you.
Dr. Lin was nothing like I thought. I was expecting a cold, unemotional asian physician. I found him to be compassionate, understanding and easy to talk to.
His staff are professional and kind. My most memorable time of surgery was a few days after and I was frustrated that I was STILL in the hospital. I was expecting to leave in three days. I missed my family and wanted to go home but was held longer as a precaution. I pouted and refused to cooperate with GW staff and demanded to see Dr. Lin. He came to my rescue and released me that morning after ensuring I was ok to go home. That memory will forever remain with me because I viewed it as his way of making sure I was comfortable even if it meant healing at home with my family and that meant alot to me.
I believe Dr. Lin is the best in the business. That may be a little biased since he's the only Dr. that has performed bypass on me, but I feel just that confident.
The only part that I absolutely detested was the drainage system. EWWWWWWW It was gross and annoying but part of the process. I scared the bejuvees out of myself many times because I thought my toddler had yanked the dern thing out! I am grateful to Dr. Lin and God the Father for seeing me through such a risky procedure.
I am extremely pleased to have chosen Dr. Paul Lin as my surgeon for my Roux-en-Y bariatric surgery. Dr. Lin is very informative, takes as much time as you need, answers questions in great detail until you are satisfied. My yearlong pre-surgery program was a requirement of, and completed though my insurer Kaiser Permanente. Once I was referred to Dr. Lin I was on the fast track. My wife had surgery with him on November 9th, 2004 and I followed on December 14th, 2004.
Dr. Lin has two folks working with him who are deserving of very high praise as well. Denise Johnstone is his CNP and is among the most incredible people I have ever met. She is attentive to detail, compassionate, very informative and very friendly. She gladly answers questions even if you have asked them before. She took her personal time to come by and visit my wife in the ER several weeks after surgery when she went in for unrelated causes. Denise took the time to be certain that the ER staff was fully informed as to the surgery and its possible bearing on their decisions.
Dr. Graham Moore is a surgical resident at George Washington University Hospital where my surgery was performed. Dr. Moore is not an employee of Dr. Lin's but works closely with him in both the clinical and surgical arenas. Of all of the medical students and residents with which I interacted during my wife's surgery and my subsequent stay I was most impressed with Dr. Moore. He has good manner and good humor. He will clearly be a successful surgeon in his own right before long.
George Washington University Hospital has a particular section known as 5 North that specializes in WLS patients. 5 North encompasses about 25 beds and a subsection of about 11 beds are dedicated for WLS patients. Included in that section is a Bariatric Education room. Here many materials are available for patient review. This unit also features both beds AND chairs that are SIZED for us full figured folks.
I recommend Dr. Lin and his associate staff without hesitation.
Excellent first impression of Dr. Lin. He spent a great deal of time answering my questions and providing detailed information regarding the pros/cons of the surgery. He seems very knowledgeable, capable and sensitive to the specific needs of bariatric patients. His staff, including Kathy and Denise were so kind, helpful and reassuring. So far, it's been such a relief to be treated with some dignity and respect by medical professionals.
9-10-04 We have our first visit to see Dr. Lin on 9-15-04. I will let you know what I think of him after that. Kathy on his staff was very nice. Answered all questions like I was the only one of importance at the time. I like that.
9-15-04
I think that was the date. Will have to verify later. We met with the Dr and I like him. He was very reassuring and soft spoken. Answered all of our questions and did not rush us. I think he is a good choice so far.
I met with two different surgeon. I was most impressed with the personal attention I got pre op from Dr. Lin. He took his time answering all the questions that both my husband and myself had. He explained both the opened RNY and the laproscopic, including the pros and cons of both. After hearing his explaination, I chose to have the open procedure. Post op, I dealt have dealt mainly with his staff and I thoughly enjoy the attention I get. His staff has made it very clear that if I have any question or concerns to call any time, day or night. While in the hospitol, I was being visited several times a day by his staff and if I ever had problems or one of his staff was concerned that I needed something that I wasn't getting, they were very quick to bring it to the attention of the hospitol staff. I would rate Dr. Lin and his staff as a 9.5. (A 10 is perfect and I am only 25 days post op, so I think I need a little more time to give them a perfect score. HA HA) Dr. lin's surgical competence was why I chose him, but the bedside manner and personal care I have received from him and his staff has been the best!
I have my first consultation with him on April 19th. I will post again afterwards.
4/22/04 - Well, I met Dr. Lin on 4/19, and I found him to be very straight forward, knowledgable, and nice. His nurse practitioner was awesome as well. When my husband and I got into the examining room, they had a video tape set up to watch. After the 30 min video, the nurse came in and asked some questions. Then Dr. Lin came in and answered all of my questions. I was there for 2 1/2 hours. He addressed all of the possible risks and complications. What I really liked about him is that he only does 6 gastric bypass surgeries a week. I am so glad he is not the type of surgeon who does 6 in one day. Those types make me nervous. I will meet with him once more before my big day. Looking forward to everthing. The only negative thing I have to say is that the room that I was in was very hot. They hadn't cut the air on yet and it was really warm outside.
6/3/04 - Well, I had my surgery on 5/27, and everything went great. Dr. Lin met with me and my family the day of the surgery and explained everything once more and then we went to the OR. The surgery took 4 hours. Everything went well. I saw him as I was waking up in recovery and he spoke ot me and my family again. Every day I was in the hospital, I saw him every morning. He is wonderful. And the incision and the sutures look amazing. I don't know how he did it, but my icision was really thin. It's going to heal wonderfully. I am really glad I picked him, because he was just OUTSTANDING. His nurse practitioner, Denise, is OUTSTANDING. Even the medical students that came around in the morning for rounds were OUTSTANDING. I recommend him to anyone having any type of surgery done. I was never scared or nervous. I felt safe with him. And after the surgery, I felt no pain. Not because of the morphine, I just had no pain. I hardly used it so they took it away and gave me Percocet if I needed it. The only time I was in pain is when I coughed or that night when I tried to sit up from the bed to get into a chair. Other than that, everything was pain free. And 10 days later, still pain free. I am able to walk, get in and out of bed, ride in a car and go shopping. So needless to say, he was AMAZING!!!!!
Dr Lin was the second doctor I had gone to in search of a surgeon. My first experience with the other doctor was that I was being sold a car or something. It was so impersonal and didn't seem to matter to the doctor who I was or why I wanted surgery.
Dr Lin's office was totally different. He and Denise were what I was looking for. Both were intersested in me and my journey. The video and information that I was told and received was extensive. Everything was covered, good and bad. I knew what was expected of me and it was emphasized to me that this was a life change, forever. I had surgery in January, 2004. We did hit a road bump and the opening from my pouch to my small intestine was closed. Nothing went through. Even though it was a bad experience at the time, everything was explained to me. Exactly why this happens and what was being done to fix it. I have had 2 enoscopy dilations since then and I seem to be on track. Throughout this whole thing Denise has been my lifline. She has been helpfull in so many ways. Always returning my calls promplty and never making me feel that I am a pain in the ***. I have nothing bad to say about Dr Lin and his office and I am glad that I picked him.
