I met with Dr. Kurian four weeks ago in her Manhattan office. There was a group of approx. fifteen patients waiting to see her and her partner, Dr. Roslin. Before my private consult, Dr. Roslin spoke to the whole group about the different types of surgery. He did a great job--clear and consice. After about an hour, it was my turn to see Dr. Kurian. She was professional, personable and very matter-of-fact. I am confident that she is the surgeon for me, and she was well worth the wait and the $30 parking fee. The office is well staffed (even though Almira was on jury duty) and impressively equipped. After my consult, I took a metabolic test (administered by RN Pritee Patel) to determine my resting metabolic rate. Apparently, my body requires 4000 calories a day to subsist at rest. The average woman needs something like 2000, so I'm running on double. I also had my body fat/composition measured with a high tech scale which gave a print-out of my results. I got my surgery date the same day of the consult because I already had my psych and nutritional letters in hand. Lastly, I attended the monthly support group the same night. It is actually run by the two surgeons, Drs. Kurian and Roslin. It was standing room only and very informative.
My First impression of Dr Kurian was upbeat and easy to talk to. I bought family members with me to the first consultation and she made my family and myself feel totally comfortable. She is very informative and does not sugar coat the procedure. her staff is very friendly and helpful. I really dug her personality there was no apprehension with her. Her discussion on after care was very easy to understand as a laymen. I rate her a 10+.
Dr. Kurian is more than just a professional, she is very straight forward and I appreciate that. She was very comforting in the operating room and tried to keep my mind off of the IV Catheter and I even had a say on what music will be played...not like I heard any of it :)
But, she earned my respect when she went out and spoke to my Mom and Dad. My Mom is from Korea and usually gets ignored, most people speak directly to my Dad. My Mom later told me that Dr. Kurian was very clear, direct, and spoke directly to her and my Dad and my Mom understood everything she said. My Mom spoke so highly of her after meeting her just once...which means the world to me.
Dr. Kurian first strikes you as young, professional, competent and confident, yet is more than willing to spend the time it takes to answer your questions and fully brief you on the various WLS options available. She stresses the importance of aftercare and patient compliance as vital components of WLS success. Her bedside manner is excellent and very calming. I never questioned that I was in the best of all possible hands for my procedure.
Her aftercare includes monthly appointments with her and working with her nutritionist, who is well-versed in the differences between the various WLS. She also holds support meetings with her colleague, Dr. Roslin.
Her office staff is very responsive and patient with our questions and anxiety.
The most successful patients of WLS have surgeons who work in partnership toward their success and Dr. Kurian fully believes in this and actively participates in her patients' aftercare.
The only even remotely negative comment I have is that when she heard which insurance company I was with, she warned me that since I had no co-morbidities, they would almost certainly come back with a requirement for a 6-12 month Dr-supervised diet. So this put me off getting my paperwork done due to fear of being turned down and/or being forced to do yet another unsuccessful diet. My fear was in vain, however, since they came back with an immediate approval. *whew*
I find Dr. Kurian to be extremely down-to-earth, authentic and clear with what to expect. I also researched her reputation extensively and did not hear one negative comment about her. In fact it seems that she is one of the most reputed Bariatric surgeons in New York. Her staff is efficient and knowledgable. I was also impressed with her choice for Nutrionist and Psychologist. My favorite quote to share from Dr. K. is that she started out an open forum by saying "we are hear to make healthy people, not skinny people". I will update this again after my surgery.
Dr. Kurian is wonderful and makes you feel very comfortable. She explains things in detail and allows you to make the decision of which procedure you wish to have.
The office staff is extreamly helpful and works with you and the insurance to facilitate the insurance companies needs.
Only negative comments:
Parking is incredably expensive there and there is only one evelator to her floor.
it gets very crowded.
My first impression on my surgeon was..wow she is young but she knew her stuff. She was so pleasant. I felt very comfortable with her. She answered any question that I asked. If I had more questions that I did not mentioned to her she told me to email her. I love that. I was so relaxed with her. Even her staff was wonderful they got things moving. If you are looking into a Surgeon here in NYC..Dr Kurian is the one Surgeon you should make an appointment with. Believe me you will love her. Rating her from 1-10..She is a 10 all the way. She is very straightforward. Nothing is held back and thats how its suppose to be.
I had interviewed two other surgeons before meeting Dr. Kurian. I knew immediately that she was the one I wanted to work with. Her manner was caring, yet professional. Her staff, too, was caring and professional. They have worked with me to get my surgery date as soon as possible. I was originally scheduled for June 13, but they had a cancellantion in May and asked if I wanted it. Dr. Kurian was very clear about what the risks of the surgery are. She used drawings as well as showing us an actual lap band that would be used if you choose that surgery. Overall, I would rate her as an excellent surgeon in whom I have complete confidence.
It's certainly important to be surgically competent, but if a surgeon does not have a good bedside manner, my confidence in their ability lags.
