When I met Dr.Kurian I was very happy to see how down to earth she was. She asked me what I knew about the RNY and then explained what it was and the risks involved. She has a wonderful secretary (Elmira) who also knows alot and can help answer questions. Either the doctor or Elmira responded within 1 - 2 days to my questions. Also about 2 weeks post op I had a scare with dumping and called the doctors service at 2am and not even 10 min. later the doctor called me back. She was very understanding and helpful. I don't have anyone to compare her to but I feel she is a perfect 10 and would recommend her to anyone interested in this.

Today I met with Dr. Kurian. She was absolutely incredible and gave me all the information I needed. She was very informative and I liked her sense of humor. She didn't try and rush me out of the office and made sure that I understood everything I need to know.

First off, let me say that I learned about Dr. Marina Kurian from a woman that works in my fathers office. She had had the same surgery as myself, and had/is having a wonderful experience. The first time I met Dr. Kurian, I felt immediately at ease. I'd already done all my reasearch at this point so I knew what I was getting into and right from the start she told me what to expect. She let me know from the word go that this is not an easy solution. There's still work on my part to do, and if I want to I can sabotage the work. She let me know the risks upfront.

I've been fighting with my health insurance over coverage (not covered at this time) but through the process the staff has been there. They are on top of things at every step of the way, and they always let me know what's going on. After care is empasized as being as important if not more important then the surgery itself. I have to see a nutritionist for 1 year post-op, and the doctor once a month to monitor the band. Make sure there's no complications and that everything is working right.

I have researched this surgery and the Dr.'s performing the surgery a great deal, and I am so at ease with what to expect...I don't know what else to say.

I heard of Dr. Kurian from my girlfriend who had the lap-band procedure. I was thinking about that for a while when I was Dr. Kurian on a Discovery Channel special: "Heavyweight Solutions". There she was! She seemed so small and petite! After a year of wrestling with the decision, I called and made an appointment. Two days before my appointment, I watched "Dateline NBC" and heard Al Roker's story - and there was Dr. Kurian again!! Now I knew that it was the right thing - you know what they say: the third time is the charm!

At the meeting (I asked my husband to come with me), she took her time. She explained each and every procedure which she performs and asked me if I had any questions. Then she would slowly explain the answers. SHE NEVER RUSHED ME even though her waiting room was full!

I am so primed for this surgery! I have already met with the psychologist and the nutritionist and now the papers go to the insurance company and we wait for approval!

I absolutely love Dr. Kurian. I was initially going to have Dr. Garber on Long Island do the surgery. But his office staff is TERRIBLE! I decided to check out Dr. Kurian (pre-Al Roker) and was so glad I did. She is wonderful! Very nice, very skilled and very FUNNY! Her staff is great too. She went over everything about the surgery, risks, after care - everything! She's very knowledgeable and makes sure that all questions are answered. Luckily I didn't have to choose between surgical competence or bedside manner - because she's great on both. She's the best - I highly recommend her.

Dr. Kurian is a wonderful person and a skilled surgeon. She always has time for you. Her staff is helpful and withstands the numerous phone calls that come with this kind of surgery.

I would recommend this practice to anyone.

I guess my thinking about choosing Dr. Kurian was, "If she's good enough for Al Roker..." LOL. My first consult with her is 1/2/03, so we'll see how it goes. My impression based on her appearences on Dateline NBC and the Today show were that, while being quite young, she is quite knowledgeable in lap bariatric surgery, patient, and professional. And I plan on giving her poor, overworked receptionist, Melissa, a big hug when I meet her, for having to field the hundreds upon hundreds of phone calls the office must have received after all the press Dr. Kurian has gotten!!! :)

I met with Dr. Kurian with my husband and we
both were so happy with her. She was very honest about the surgery and told me the risks involved. She spent a lot of time with us and answered any questions we had. She made us completely at ease. I scheduled my
surgery for 1/24/03. I would highly recommend
Dr. Kurian.

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WHEN I FIRST MET HER. ALTHOUGH SHE LOOKS YOUNG FOR HER AGE SHE IS SUCH A PROFESSIONAL. BUT TAKES HER TIME EXPLAINING EVERYTHING ON THE SURGERY AND ANSWERS ALL QUESTIONS. ISN'T IN A RUSH. I WAS SURPRISED TO GET MY SURGERY DATE SO QUICKLY;JAN 29, 2003. SHE INFORMED ME ABOUT ALL THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH THE SURGERY. I WILL BE ATTENDING MY FIRST SUPPORT GROUP NOVEMBER 14 AT THE LENOX HILL HOSPITAL. I HAVE ALSO GOTTEN MY PHYSCOLOGICAL DONE. WILL BE MEETING WITH THE NUTRITIONIST ON THE 11 OF NOVEMBER. AFTER THAT IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME TO WAIT FOR THE INSURANCE APPROVAL. WILL UPDATE SOON.BY THE WAY, I AM HAVING THE LAP BAND PROCEDURE.
