I had my consult with Dr. Kuhn back in August, 2002 and found him to be very soft spoken and very sweet. He is well known in the Dallas area as a wonderful surgeon so I didn't have any reservations about him at all. The Baylor program is the best! They have monthly support meetings and an online message board that the doctors participate in as well.
Dr. Kuhn and Dr. McCarty only do this surgery laparoscopically and they have perfected it throughout the past couple of years. Their success rate is among the best and they have had no fatalities.
I highly recommend this team of doctors!
After going to 3 other seminars for local doctors, I felt at ease with this concept of weight loss. I was very impressed with Dr. Kuhn and the presentation, I knew he was going to be my doctor from day one. He office staff is very good as well.Dr. Kuhn and the staff at the office and the hospital are a team, and they are all very professional, I don't have anything negative to say about anything. Aftercare is a must, I think that helps to keep you on the right track. The risks are discussed and you are given the current data for people having the surgery. I rate Dr. Kuhn the best in the field I highly recommend him, in fact my sister had surgery with him in august. My parents would both have it if they had insurance. My mom wasn't supportive at first but now she wants to have this surgery so bad. His bedside manner is great, as well as his surgical competence. This may not be for everyone you have to be willing to make changes in your lifestyle.
I finally met with Dr. Kuhn yesterday at my consult, and was extremely impressed with him and his knowledge of the lap procedure. I feel very comfortable with my decision to go with Dr. Kuhn, as well as the Bayor facilities and staff. The office staff is outstanding! I would have to give them 2 thumbs up! Very friendly, considerate, knowledgable, and patient. I would indiffently refer other patients to them. Of course they covered all the pertinent infomration at the seminar your required to attend before having a consult, so the consult really just emphasizes what was already said, and mainly addresses any concerens or quesitons you might have.
Ok, I have switched surgeons so thought I would give an update on the new one, but wanted to leave up my impression of Dr. Capps as well since I had also went to him for a consult. I attended a WLS seminar in Dallas at Baylor for Dr. McCarty/ Dr. Kuhn last Thursday and have decided to use them and their facilities. Mr. McCarty/ Kuhn are both providers within my network (UHC PPO) and so decided to look into them as well, not to mention they perform lap rny and Dr. Capps only performs open rny. So, that was yet another major decision. But onward about the surgeons. Again, I have not had my one-on-one with the surgeon yet, and not sure which one I'll be talking with because I asked for first available, but the following information is based off the seminar I attented. Overall I would give them a 15 out of 10. I was extremely impressed with the wealth of information they provided us with. They went over the complications, the aftercare, the risks of surgery and even the several different types of surgery. They explained how far they have come in their procedures, how they have improved and learned from prior surgies. Their staff was extremely friendly and very helpful from what contact I did have with them. They also seemed to really know every aspect of everything that had to happen and was going to happen before, during and after surgery. I cannot even begin to explain how much I appreciate what enlightment the seminar has brought into my life, knowing more about the surgery and what to expect after surgery. I would suggest that every surgeon have something like this, very informational, and extremely helpful in making the right decision for me.
My first impression of Dr. Capps, was that he was quiet, to the point, and cared quite a bit about any questions or concerns that I might have. This was my first meeting with Dr. Capps and it was very informational. The staff at the Bariatric Treatment Center in Wylie, TX, was very friendly, and seemed to be very helpful. I can't really think of anything that I didn't like about Dr. Capps, he was overall friendly, and went over everything I needed to know about before, during, and after surgery. He emphasized the aftercare program quite a bit, actually, I would have to say that is what he stressed the most. He explained the risks of surgery, which had me pretty nervous, but then again, I've never had surgery myself, so not to thrilled about that. He did however, really stress getting up and walking right away to avoid blood clots in the legs, didn't realize they were such a risk. I don't think I can really say much more about Dr. Capps since I've only met him the one time, but overall I think he is very competant and well educated about WLS surgery. My only drawback on Dr. Capps, is that he is not a surgeon covered by my Insurance. They said that they would work with me on payments for any out-of-pocket expense, but don't really care to add another medical payment, if you know what I mean.
Dr. Kuhn was wonderful and so was his staff. I found them all to be very professional and helpful. They all make you feel very comfortable and want to make insure that you understand everything about the procedure and all possible side effects and problems that could occur. They are very upfront and tell you to begin with that this procudure is like having open heart surgery.
They have a very strong aftercare program that is supreme and part of the reason I chose this Doctor.
I would recommend Dr. Kuhn 200%
As this was the first time I met him I have nothing negative about him. I will return after surgery to update.
These are my impressions of Dr. Kuhn and each person must evaluate a doctor on their own.
I originally had Dr. Todd McCarty at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, but I have changed to the other surgeon in his practice to expedite the process. I wrote this about him before I knew that I was changing: My first impression was that he was very smart and cared about what he was doing and was very precise... I still think he cares, but I think he may not know what's going on behind the scenes or else he can't help what's going on behind the scenes... I was approved within 48 hours of the United Healthcare receiving my letter, but it has been 4 weeks since his office received notification that I was approved and I have not been contacted nor have my calls been returned regarding my appointment (pre-op). He is very nice and has good morals, but Baylor is in a transition period right now... I just kinda got stuck in the middle of it. He emphasizes aftercare as the most vital part and has a very structured program to support that belief. He was very blunt and honest about the risks and I really appreciated that. I would rate him very highly except for the VERY VERY VERY long time delay. Surgical competence is better than bedside manner because it is a life or death thing... but, both matter b/c this is a difficult thing to go through and the support of your doctor is a good thing.
Dr. Kuhn: He seems very nice-is much easier to get ahold of than Dr. McCarty...
When I met Dr Kuhn at the seminar he seemed kind of mousey and quite. He was very nice but quite just the same. You could tell he was very knowledgeable about this procedure and comfortable doing it. When I went in for my consult Dr Kuhn was totally different than he was at meetings and seminars. He was very friendly and talkitive. He is so sweet and seems as though he really cares about me and my life in general not just my medical problems. I love that! He also does not talk down to me. I am not a stupid person and I hate drs that talk to you like you are a child. He was very respectful. I love him already!
02/16/02 Found my surgeon. Dr. Kuhn of Baylor Medical Ctr in Dallas. From what I seen and heard from him at the seminar he seems just wonderful. He has a very caring personality and very informative. The staff was great, they have a aftercare program that seems to be really good. Both DR. Kuhn and Dr. Mccarty addressed the risks of surgery and their procedures. I will keep you posted with more info once I have my office appointment. The follow up program is great, they start you on that before surgery.
I had my consult with Dr. Kuhn and he is so nice and he takes the time to listen to you. I did not feel like I was being rushed out of his office at all. He wanted to hear about me and how I became to be this overweight and also that I do not want to continue this way. Very nice Doctor.
