Dr. Kuhn is a great doctor with a wonderful bedside manner. He was patient, never trying to rush me on my way during my office visits. In the hospital, he visited several times (which rather stunned me, seeing that the doctor who took out my gall bladder ten years ago never even came into my room in the hospital).
I started out the process by going to Dr. Kuhn's & Dr. McCarty's monthly seminar in February of 2001. It was very informative and left me few questions to ask once that I made it to my pre-op office visit.
You might hear some complaints about the staff at Dr. Kuhn's office because, as a result of their seminars, they are overwhelmed with responses from people like me who are eager to start living a "normal" life. They try to do their best to keep up with the onslaught of phone calls and etc. and I think, despite their efforts to do otherwise, it some times gets to them. (You know we desparate people can get kind of ornery sometimes and that's not easy to deal with). But if you'll try to get what you can off of web sites like this one and leave the "unanswered" questions only for the staff, they will do their best to get back to you as soon as they can.
I would recommend Dr. Kuhn to any and everyone having the surgery done and I would also recommend Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. They have this surgery down to a fine art.
I had my consultation with Dr. Kuhn 3/27/01. I was very impressed with him. He was eager to answer any questions I had. The office staff is very friendly and helpful.
I am 3 days post-op. Dr. Kuhn is great! I would recommend him to anyone who is wanting to have this surgery. He is very personable and seems very concerned about his patients. He had another doctor assist him with my surgery who was also great. His name was Dr. Jason Harrison.
Dr. Kuhn has a very gentle caring nature. He spent as much time with me as I needed on my first consult with him. He has been a surgical oncologist throughout most of his career and has just recently begun to offer gastric bypass surgery. This for him is very exciting too, as sometimes treating cancer patients you may have a sad outcome. But with this surgery, you are giving people their lives back, a chance to begin in a new healthy body. He rocks! He came recommended to me by my gyno and my family Dr. too. Of course, Baylor Hospital has an incredible reputation as one of the finest hopitals in Dallas, so when I found out that they had surgeons doing the procedure I was looking at, I was thrilled. I have not been disappointed.
The office staff is very friendly but overwhelmed. I think they have underestimated the need (demand) for this surgery. They have been doing it for about a year now and the demand is growing at a frightening rate! I did present Dr. Kuhn and his office manager with a 3 page letter of my observations of how they handled the approval process and they both were very receptive and expressed a desire to improve on patient intake. Overall, the most important thing is how much they show concern for the patient and they are tops in this area.
I really don't have any negative comments about Dr. Kuhn. In fact, I was shocked at how calm and sweet he was when I went to the hospital on April 2nd for my surgery and was running a fever of 100.8 and had a pretty rough cough. Both he and the Anesthesiologist could not have been nicer about it. They discussed the options with me and also how dangerous it would have been to proceed without knowing what was really wrong. I was devasted! Not only had I cost all the workers and the 3 Doctors a days pay, but I took a spot someone else could have used for the surgery. His staff said when he returned to the office when he should have been operating on me, he said calmly to please reschedule me as soon as possible and was not even miffed. (I would have been!) I guess a calm surgeon is a GOOD thing!!! Anyway, they rescheduled me 16 days later and I am working on staying healthy for the 18th of April, 2001.
I would give Dr. Kuhn a top notch rating for his surgical competence and an incredibly patient and sweet demeanor.
Dr McCarty is a very patient and knowledgable physician. His seminar is informitive and very helpful. He and Dr Kuhn will answer all of your questions when the seminar is over. They do not leave till everyone has asked their questions and received an answer. He also has a great after care program now in place. My wife and I are glad we have chosen him as our surgeon. Chris the insurance clerk was very friendly at the seminar but seems a little rushed when you speak to him on the telephone. However he will always return your telephone calls the same day.
I would have to say that his office staff seems a bit overwhelmed.
Dr. Kuhns practice recently did a special on
one of the local television stations, and I think it was
a bit much for them to handle. Remember that you have
to operate on their schedule. You may not hear from them
a couple of weeks after approval, but they will eventually call
you and schedule your appointments and surgery.
Dr. Kuhn's practice holds a monthly meeting every 2nd
Thursday of the month for Q and A's for pre as well as post op.
They also hold a support group meeting that evening as well.
So far, everything is great, I'll let you know more after the surgery.
