Dr. Huse is a wonderful surgeon and person. He has always been patient and never made me feel like I was overreacting when I had a concern or that I was wasting his time. Due to some of the complications I have had, I was pretty much seeing Dr. Huse or calling him every week with some issue or another and never once did I feel foolish or stupid. He seems deeply concerned about his patients and their well being. I am always bragging about him and would recommend him to anyone having any surgery, not just the RNY.

Dr. Huse is great. He is very kind and concerned and definitely puts his patients first. He is much warmer and more personable after you get to know him. I have absolutely no regrets in choosing him as my surgeon. I do not know of another surgeon in Indianapolis with more WLS experience and expertise. I feel very lucky.

1. "What was your first impression of him?"
He is soft spoken, understated, and seems a bit distant. He was informative and politely answered questions.
2. "How would you describe his office staff?"
They are a very busy and hurried bunch. I had little contact and have no reason to think they will be anything less than professional. The staff member who took my measurements and blood pressure was very friendly and kind.
3. "What did you like least about him?"
I expected more discussion about my medical history and reasons for pursuing WLS. This was my expectation and, upon reflection, I suppose we did not dive too deeply into my history since I clearly am a WLS candidate.
4. "What should future patients know about him?"
Frankly, if you are hoping for a surgeon who has an outgoing personality, or is outwardly friendly, Dr. Huse is not for you. I selected Dr. Huse because of his long-time WLS record, history, and experience. That said, it seems that patients who undergo WLS with Dr. Huse all feel very positive about him and his personality. It seems he's someone you have to get to know.
5. "How much does he emphasize aftercare?"
Dr. Huse expects all WLS patients to follow the strict aftercare guidelines instituted by St. Vincent's. He clearly stated WLS is only a tool, not a cure. If you work the program, the program will work for you.
6. "How did he address the risks of surgery?"
As a medical researcher, I believe Dr. Huse made a concerted effort to explain the two surgeries he offers in plain English with very few, if any, technical medical terms. His teaching ability is very strong and his lecture was easy to comprehend.
7. "How would you rate him overall?"
Again, I chose Dr. Huse for his proven WLS skills and experience. I have spent an estimated total of 40 minutes with him so far and feel confident in his knowledge and expertise. I do not know of a bariatric surgeon in the Indianapolis area with a longer and better track record. Ultimately, that is what matters the most to me.
8. "Which is better, surgical competence, bedside
manner, or both great?"
Without question, I must vote for surgical competence. HOWEVER, as a person seeking WLS, I have experienced so much prejudice from the medical community that I am feeling quite weary and cynical about doctors these days. Therefore, I admit I would have appreciated an exhibition of even a small amount of warmth. Perhaps, as other patients indicate, that will come later.

My first impression of Dr. Huse wasn't favorable. I felt that he was very standoffish and that my questions were stupid.

I didn't see him again until the day of my surgery and he was a godsend! He really helped relieve some concerns that my family had and I felt total confidence in him.

At my first visit post=op to his office, he was like a differnet person, very friendly and joking.

His office staff is fine. I really haven't had to deal with them other than making appointments.

Future patients should not be put off by the initial impression of Dr. Huse. He is a very nice man and a great doctor. I highly recommend him.

I felt Dr. Huse was very thorough in his explanation of the proceedures available, expected outcomes, and side effects. His office staff were very professional but yet also made me feel relaxed. He stressed the need for follow ups and following the nutritional guidelines very strongly. He has been doing weight loss surgeries since 1978. I feel very confident in his abilities. He has done over 4,000 proceedures.

I liked Dr. Huse. He has a very quiet since of humor. Not too loud, not too quiet. He was also willing to answer my questions even with an office full of other patients.

My only uneasiness was that they will be starting to do Laproscopic Gastric Bypass surgery this summer. I would prefer it done via Lap. But I also dont want to be his first Lap! After speaking with him I found that I would be a good candidate for Lap. But it does make me a little nervous.

I noticed at our consultation that Dr. Huse was very quiet, very reserved. In the hospital, after my surgery I was relieved at his professionalism, he was very candid, answered all my questions, was extremly sure of himself and made me feel very much at ease.
His staff is very cordial and accomodating. They are friendly and efficient. They also did everything they could to process my insurance information which was a huge burden lifted from my shoulders.
He has also urged me to utilize the aftercare programs that the center has to offer and places a huge emphasis on the role of the dietician.
I had done all the research into the risks of the surgery and chose not to discuss this in detail with Dr. Huse. I am completely happy with Dr. Huse. I don't think I could have chosen a better surgeon, so I rate him very high. My surgery went through without a hitch, so obviously he performed correctly, removing a question about his competance.
I generally prefer more of a personable bedside manner because of my own outgoing personality and at first I thought that Dr. Huse was somewhat lacking in the sense of humor department however, I came to discover that he probably does have a good sense of humor, just dosen't really establish enough of a relationship with a patient to show it. I did notice hints of it in some of our exchanges though.

My 1st consultation is scheduled for April 2, 2002 with Dr Huse. I found out today that if I had received approval for surgery today he is currently scheduling for October. I really don't want to wait that long so I am going to find out how long the wait is for Dr Jones and if I can change surgeons at this time.

He wasn't very personable but an exceptional surgeon. Very caring. But as you can imagine very busy.
I have already had a friend that i recomended him to and she had surgery also.

I have only met Dr. Huse once. It was at the informational meeting I attended several weeks (months?) ago. He gave a lecture on the various procedures, took questions, and then met with each patient individually. He was nice, listened to my questions, and gave honest answers. (In retrospect, I wish I had asked more.) The office staff have been very friendly to deal with. This is a long-distance relationship; I live two hours from Indianapolis.

I have only talked to Dr. Huse once and that was at my consultation. He seemed like a very kind man. He was very informative and to the point. Fran has been very helpful through all of this, i had a long fight with my insurance companies and when ever i had a question dr. Huse staff was more than happy to answer them.

I had met Dr. Huse 20 years ago. At that time he could not do a revison. I am sure glad things have changed. He is very nice. Office staff was fine, not overly freindly.

I knew that the aftercare & diet are going to be most important to me for success, that and the surgery before was a failure for me.
So I know it's the after surgery stuff that counts.

I thought Dr. Huse was great.
