I was very impressed with my first meeting with Dr. Huse. I work in Sports Medicine and have met many physicians during my career. Dr. Hues made me feel comfortable and set me at ease, helping me prepare for this journey. He has a good sense of humor and will take his time with you to make sure all of your questions/concerns are met. His office staff are very helpful, but very busy. It took a while to first meet Dr. Hues and the office staff wasn't very helpful at first. If you miss an appointment, you will have to wait a very long time to be seen. When I called his office with a question, the nurse always called me back that same day with an answer. Dr. Huse stresses the importance of walking and exercise with the program. He strongly encourages the support groups and meeting with your dietician on a regular basis. He works the the St. Vincent/Carmel Bariatric Services in Indianapolis/Carmel, Indiana. He was a straight shooter when talking about the procedure. He informed me of the risks/complications and emphasized that the surgery is only a tool, not a promise to lose weight. Dr. Hues is a very experienced general surgeon. He has many roux-en-y procedures under his belt. I would recommend Dr. Hues without hesitation and place him with very high on my list of surgeons that I have met in my career.
Dr. Huse seems like a nice man. Very "down to business". The office staff was also very nice. Dr. Huse is a straight shooter, so if you're looking for someone to stroke your head and cry with you, you've got the wrong person. If you want a capable surgeon who gives you the true facts, then you'll be happy.
My first impression of Dr. Huse is that he is very experienced in bariatric surgery. I have only seen him one time, but I am comfortable enough to let him operate on me. His office staff is always very customer friendly and promptly return phone messages. I have only met one time with Dr. Huse, and that was the inital consultation. During the consultation (which was done in a group setting with other prospective patients), Dr. Huse thoroughly covered the process of surgery, the risks, and how your diet must change after surgery for it to be most successfull. I'm not convinced that this group method is best, because there are some general questions that I think people are afraid to ask. At the same time I realize that there is a great influx of people who want to have surgery and it would be a much, much longer process if he were to explain everything to everyone individually.
Dr. Huse is a very nice soft spoken tiny little man. Thus explaining the amazement I get when I show people my very small scar. My father had colon surgery ten years ago and that scar goes from under his chest clear down below his belly button.
I spoke to Dr. Huse several times preop and I just felt completely at ease. Prior to this I had never even been in a hospital let alone had surgery.
The office staffs are great as well, they are always encouraging never discouraging. They make me feel like i can call them anytime when there is a problem or question.
My first impression of Dr. Huse is that he is soft spoken, knowledgable, and interested in answering all of my questions. My problem is that I don't know what all my questions are yet (on my first consult)
I'll have a better informed opinion of him after I have had more exposure to him. So far I have only had my initial consult with him. I'm in the waiting period to hear what my insurance company requirements and my family dr.'s test results are.
I found Dr. Huse a very stright forward and factual man. He got right down to business and was very informative on both types of surgery he offers. {Ring and Rny} He had a question and answer period after he did his general information meeting with a group of us of about 15. After that he met with each of us for a one on one. At that time It was much more personal and a time to ask more questions about him as a surgeon {his back ground and so on....} He has told me he has been preforming this type of surgery for 20 years now. When asked stright up his record of deaths, he said he has had 4. Not a bad record if I must say so myself. Needless to say, that part alone made me feel MUCH better.
I would recomend writing down all the questions you may have for him and take them with you at that time.
I had mentioned to him that I had been doing alot of work on the internet finding out all I can.....he smiled and said that you can not always believe everything you read on the internet...he is probably about 55 years old or so and isnt much of a fan of the internet, obiously. Ha-ha. Maybe thats why he hasnt filled out a lot of information on here.
He seems like a very wise man and I am not going to have any trouble working with him. I am content with my surgeon....I would rate him about a 8 or 9 as of today. Let's see what happens...This is all my personal opinions and information as I understood it. I would recomend Dr. Huse to anyone, my daughter included.
P.S. I hear he is learning to do the Lap procedure now.

The only thing negative I have to say is concerning my hospital stay at St Vincent Hospital In Carmel, Indiana. Dr Huse was not available after my surgery due to a conference out of town. His replacement was not very informative, and would come very early in the morning and chart that she had spoken to me when she had not. I was very disappointed at the lack of information shared concerning my progress or status. I was repeatedly subjected to catscans because she thought I had a leak or an abscess. Finally on the 6th day, I got to speak to the doctor doing rounds (Dr Inman). She is very informative and helpful. I was discharged that same day. All the nurses were extremely nice except for an ER nurse who was called to try and start an IV on me after my original IV had infiltrated. She told another nurse to put in a PICC line. I said I did not want a PICC line. She looked at me , for the first time, and said "It's not up to you!" She was the rudest and most abrasive person I have ever encountered.
My first impression of Dr. Huse was of surprise. He spoke in such a calm, quite manner. I'm use to doctors that are quite vocal. He was very informative and professional and that is the main reason why I chose him.
His staff has been very helpful and polite. I've called Nomie several times and she has always been helpful. After receiving my surgery date I worked with Fran who was very direct, yet professional.
Dr. Huse did a great job of explaining the procedure and the risks involved. He has stressed the before as well as after care. I have the utmost confidence in his abilities and will post my after surgery notes later.
May 13, 2002 -- I saw Dr. Huse several weeks ago for an initial consultation along with a group of about 8 other folks who were learning about the surgery for the first time. Since everyone was there for the same reason, it made sense to me to optimize the time by giving a presentation rather than repeating essentially the same info over and over again. He was a quiet, "older" (as in, experienced, gray hair, nothing visible is pierced -- you know what I mean!) man with a dry sense of humor. After the group meeting I met with him for perhaps 10 minutes while we discussed my particular situation. Since I am breaking bones in my legs due to my weight we discussed how the procedure could be expedited as quickly as possible in order to help preserve my mobility. I feel comfortable with this man and the fact that he will cut into and permanently alter my body. He would not, probably, be real high up on the list of folks I would pick as close friends, but then that is not what I am asking him to do. I felt his genuine concern and his desire to make me understand the seriousness of this surgery. I think this is what I would hope for in a surgeon.
