Hugh Houston Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

It was funny. I had been told a lot about Dr. Houston's personality before I went to see him. I was told that he would be tough and hard but after thinking about it, I felt that was just what I needed. I needed someone who would be hard on me and make me fight to ensure that this would be my last diet... that this would be a way of life that I could live with forever. The one thing I noticed after meeting him is that I could see that while he was tough, he truely cares about your success. And he surrounds himself with people who care about your success. And most of them have had surgery themselves which means they know what you are going through.rnrnDr. Houston is all business when you come to see him. There is not a lot of \"getting to know each other\" type of conversation. He has one objective.... Making you thin so if you are looking for someone to hold your hand and not push you hard, he may not be the best for you but I can assure you that there is no better physician that cares more about your seccess. He is fabulous.rnrnHe stresses nutrition, aftercare and excercise and he doesn't like excuses. But I felt I had made excuses for way to long and that was why I was in the shape I was in.rnrnDr. Houston is the perfect doctor for me and if you are looking for the best....... It is Hugh Houston, MD. That is my opinion anyway. But you should make up your own mind. Research and prepare are the best things you can do if you want to be successful.

I met with Dr. Houston for the initial consultation on October 26th. He expressed concern over my weight being such that he didn't think I could lose much more then 200 pounds. I asked him what he would set my goal weight at and he said he couldn't set one. So I set it at 200. Which means I am setting goal of a 267 pound weight loss with Gastric Bypass. rnHe was very thorough in the procedure he would perform. He told me if I could lose some weight before surgery date it would be better for me. rnDuring the consultation, he displayed some humor and I became more and more comfortable with the process.rnI am a little put out that he was so discouraging regarding how much weight I could lose with the surgery tool. My attitude leaving his office was a little indignant. I will reach my goal weight and show him. rnrnDr. Houston's staff, ie HOLLY, was very friendly and attentive. I had not been weighed nor have i known my weight since 1998. She handled my discomfort and shame with great respect and a wonderful sense of humor.

I just scheduled my surgery for 10/30/07 with Dr. Houston. He was wonderful during the consultation. He thoroughly discussed everything. Answered all my questions. He never seemed in a hurry to get the visit over with. I am from Memphis. Dr. Houston is in Nashville. I am driving more than 3 hours one way just to see him per referral from a friend. The doctor here in Memphis, will not even meet with you until you have paid or your insurance has been approved. Dr. Houston's office staff is very friendly and willing to go out of their way to help you with any issues. Plus since I am having to self-pay the fact that the surgery in Nashville is $4000 cheaper was a big plus. My husband was having issues with me wanting the surgery, but Dr. Houston calmed his fears and answered all his questions. I would recommend Dr. Houston to anyone interested in bariatric surgery. After meeting him in person, I just felt that everything would go successfully. Plus he's not bad to look at either.

I first met Dr. Houston during the mandatory seminar that I attended last year. He seemed personable yet professional. I went into this process already with a surgeon in mind, but after meeting Dr. Houston, I changed my mind and chose him. My pre-surgical consult went extremely well with him. He was very straightforward with me about what I can expect, and he pretty much told me exactly what I wanted to hear: THIS WILL NOT BE EASY. I'd rather have someone tell me the truth than blow smoke up my butt and tell me that everything will be ok. His staff has walked me through this process pretty much holding my hand all the way through. I needed that as well. My surgery date is set for 3 weeks from now (10/29/2007) and I'm looking forward to it because I know the risks, I know the dangers, and I know the level of difficulty I'm about to face.

Dr Houston lived up to everything which was told to me about him. He is very professional and straightforward. He has wonderful bedside manner. I truly believe I made the best choice in a surgeon.

Dr. Houston is very straight forward and serious about what he does. I greatly appreciate that. The staff at his office are great! I have called to ask several questions and always get great information and the seem happy to hear from their patients.rnrnHe will tell you just how it is with no sugar coating. rnrnThe aftercare programs are fabulous! There are support groups all over Tennessee. rnrnThe risks of surgery were explained in great detail, and I went into surgery fully knowing what to expect. I couldn't have asked for any additional information that what he provided.rnrnI give Dr. Houston a score of 100 on a scale of 1-10.

My first impression of Dr. Houston was wow, he's cute and very kind! He continues to be cute, but is so knowledgeable and caring. I got sick once and he was right there at the hospital and stayed with me for 5 hours until I was feeling much better. He is terrific and I would recommend him highly! His staff is terrific as well. There was nothing I didn't like about my doctor and his staff. Know that he cares about you and your weight loss/health. He stresses aftercare and has a great program. He always addressed all the risks. I would rate him a 10 out of 10 for being the best I've encountered. I am a registered nurse as well as a teacher so I have some knowledge about physicians, and he is the greatest! His surgical competence is fantastic, I was without pain post surgery, home in 4 days and back to work in 2 weeks with no complications. He monitors you frequently and is always just a phone call away. You feel like you are his only patient.

Dr. Houston is a very caring, compassionate man who cares deeply about his patients. rnrnAfter you get to know him a little better, he can be downright funny. I like him a lot.rnrnHe knows his stuff. He does not take chances with your health... He has a great \"better safe than sorry\" approach to little medical worries that pop up in the hospital.rnrnHe visited both me and my husband while we were in the hospital at least 2-3 times a day, sometimes four. His bedside manner was/is an excellent compliment to his amazing surgical skills.rnrnHe never hid stuff from us. He was very upfront about all the risks (and the benefits). rnrnDr. Houston deserves a great big 10!

GREAT DR... Couldn't ask for more. Took his time during first appointment, going over all risk. His Office staff very helpful.
