Yep, again with the changing of surgeons. I was lucky enough to get a job that pays for the surgery. Hopefully Dr. Stewart is the one for me. The folks on the DS board have nothing but great things to say about him. Haven't met him or gone to the seminar yet (February 17th, 2009), but I will update with my personal opinion about him after that. I have spoken with his office though, and they seem to be very helpful.
First impression, I thought he knew his stuff seem very shy and low key not really a joker type but really got excited when he talked about WLS. As I got to know him I liked him more he was very good to answer all my hundered ???? and open to discuss and worries or problem. His office and staff are very nice, he has a great plan in place everything worked out to the minute. I am very happy with Dr Stewart He did a great Job called him you with any concerns he or his staff would fix me right up. His bedsid manner is a little dry, but very over all Wonderful I would go back to him in a heartbeat!
Dr. Stewart is very nice and very serious about what he does. Some say his bedside manner is lacking, but its just that he doesn't joke around. Not that he discourages it or is disapproving - he just doesn't do it himself. He's all business and concern for you. His staff - they're AMAZING. You do have to do everything they tell you, go to the seminars, do this and that. But if you ever have a question, they're there and if they don't know they'll find someone who does. All around, this doctor and his office are great.
I had the DS with Dr. Stewart on March 5th, 2008. My first impression of him was that he was very serious about wls and about getting all of the facts about wls to his patients.rnrnI feel that as I have gotten to know him, he not only is a wonderful surgeon but is funny and has a great personality as well.rnrnMost of his office staff is wonderful, and I feel like part of a family every time I have gone there.rnrnWhat I liked best about him? Can I say his eyes? rnrnHe has a great aftercare program and really seems to care about his patients after surgery.rnrnI would recommend Dr. Stewart to anyone, and have to several friends and family members.rnrnI think surgical competence is more important, and although I have heard from others that Dr. S lacks in bedside manner, he has shown me a side of him that I really could get to know and love.
Although I'm not going to be able to use Dr. Barker, (He's not covered under my ins.), I have to take a minute to give his entire staff huge KUDOs! from Dr. Barker, to Bobby, Steve, Quinn, and Dana - they are awesome, helpful, encouraging, and supportive. If you can get your insurance to cover using Dr. Barker, do it!
What was your first impression of him/her? Very intelligent; knew exactly what he was doing; serious concern for and understanding of obese individuals and the pains, emotions and issues they deal with on a daily basis. The man is the real deal.rnrnHow did your impression change over time? It has only gotten better and better. rnrnHow would you describe his/her office staff? You couldn't find a more dedicated and involved caring staff. All of them treat the patient like a NORMAL person, which you don't find in other doctor's offices. I have noticed that obese individuals are often treated very differently than persons who do not have weight-related issues by health professionals, but his staff actually cares about each and every patient and stays positive and smiling all the time. Such a breath of fresh air. rnrnWhat did you like least about him/her? He is a man of few words, but that is ok. I can't think of anything negative to write about him. rnrnWhat should future patients know about him/her? That he is a very serious person. That's a good thing for a surgeon. rnrnHow much does he/she emphasize aftercare? It's absolutely required and if you don't follow the aftercare program his staff will haunt you until you do. rnrnDoes he/she have a structured aftercare program? Yes, very structured. Many classes that you must attend and he promotes the local support group that he asks you to attend along with your family members. rnrnHow did he/she address the risks of surgery? Very thoroughly - I felt he provided a detailed education and I am not in the medical field. rnrnHow would you rate him/her overall? Above average. rnrnWhich is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or both great? Surgical compentence, bedside manner is ok, but a man of few words.
My first impression of Dr. Stewart was that he was extremely thorough in his practice and knew what he was doing. He went over everything in minute detail as to the risks involved. He is very calm and soft spoken and completely puts me at ease. I have complete confidence and trust in Dr. Stewart.rnrnDr. Stewart is the Medical Director for the Denton Regional Medical Center, Bariatric Surgery Center and Owner/Director of the Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas clinic. So, he obviously has the experience as a bariatric surgeon. Dr. Stewart presented the facts regarding both gastric bypass and lapband. He allowed me to choose which surgery I was most comfortable with and supported me in that decision. He never pushed one over the other. However, if he didn't believe lapband would be beneficial for me, I am certain he would have said so.
