The first time I met with Dr. Nusbaum I thought, "Wow, he's so young!" I was quickly reassured that he knew what he was doing and had plenty of experience and expertise. He answered my questions before I even asked them. His staff was wonderful, supportive, and very knowledgeable. I was initially turned down by my insurance company and had to see my primary care physician for 6 months of supervised weightloss attempt. What a waste of time! I'd been overweight for as long as I can remember and tried every diet under the sun. After completing my 6 months, I went back to Dr. Nusbaum, got my approval with no hassles (at least they didn't hassle me - maybe Wanda in Dr. Nusbaum's office would say differently!). I got my prescriptions for cardiac, pulmonary, psych, and veinous clearance - went to all the appointments and passed with flying colors. Surgery date was 12/28/04 and everything went smoothly. Dr. N even supplied my boyfriend with before and after pics of my stomach! I was kept well informed, the staff of St. Barnabas was very supportive, and I was very pleased with the care I received from everyone. I had visits from the nutrionist and the medibolic physician who gave me more information on my recovery. I am very happy with my decision to have Dr. Nusbaum perform my surgery - only regret not being able to do it sooner!
I met with Dr. Nusbaum in September. He was very confident and reassuring. He spent almost an hour with me explaining all the surgical options. Together we decided on RNY. I like the fact that he is so "obessive" when it comes to making sure that the surgery is done right with no leaks before you leave the operating room. He strongly emphasized the aftercare program that is mandatory. I left his office feeling very confident in his ability and his dedication to his patients.
INSURANCE:
I live in NJ and had GHI for my health insurance. I have been hearing alot of bad stories about GHI so I waited til January 1st and I changed my health insurance to Empire BC/BS. I have an appointment with a psychologist for January 18th and then we submit the paperwork for approval. Wanda is the woman in the office to handle all the insurance issues and she has been so helpful in answering all my questions.
So..now Im keeping my fingers crossed and hoping to have a surgery date soon.
My first impression of Dr Nusbaum was "wow, he's young!" But as we spoke, he was very knowledgeable and caring and explained every aspect of the surgery, the good, the bad and the ugly and made me feel at ease. His office staff, especially Wanda is AWESOME!
Since I am still pre-op I only saw hom once and can only say that I like my experience thus far. He did inform me that I MUST participate in an aftercare program with a nutritionist, dietician and have a monitiored exercise program. Im excited to get the surgery behind be and start living!!!
Dr N is the greatest! A talented and innovative surgeon. He is down to earth from the first minute. In May of 04, my fiancee and I both had our consultation and in August we had our bypasses a day apart. We are happy with our decision and have since recommended 5 other people to him, 3 of which have had surgery and 1 is waiting to have surgery!
Dr. Nusbaum was great. I had a few problems with the office staff not doing what they said they would do. Overall the experience was great.

My husband and I met with Dr. Nusbaum yesterday 9/29/04, we were very impressed by how explained the surgery in such detail. He seems to be very thorough with the surgery taking added precautions on his patient's behalf. My husband and I left there havning a great feeling about the surgery and the special care I would be under. We would rate the Dr. Nusbaum a 10++++, we highly recomended him!!

My first impression he looks very young very well in knowledge of people who struggle with obesity. Dr. Nussbaum has wonderful staff they are very caring and open minded. He's absolutely fab... The only problem he do not participate with BCBS he's out of network. He's very caring and answers all questions asked of him. He not only staples to prevent leaks he stitches and does the berium test while you in the operating room instead of waiting to the next day when copmlication may have arrived. That only gives him an A+++. Yes and online support group at Nussiesgroup.com. He addressed the surgery in full detail with illustration he also discussed pluses and risks involved. I would rate him at a A+++ as stated before. Bothe bedside and competence works hand and hand and he has both.
