Dr. Owens was very informative from the beginning. He was great. His office staff worked hard in getting my insurance approval in a very short amount of time. At times the office staff seemed a little stressed, or busy, but at others they were fine. I was very informed about the surgery, and had no complications, so I was happy with the office staff, and the attention from Dr. Owens.

My first impresion of my surgeon was that he seemed to be a very intelligent man. My impression did not change but he ended up being a funny and polite person along with his intelligence. The office staff was perfect in all ways. There wasn't anything I can think of that would make me dislike him. Future patients should know that he is a very reliable surgeon and has a good sense of humor. HE has emphasized after care very strongly and it is structured very well. I was informed clearly of all the risks of surgery. I would rate my surgeon a 9 on a scale from 1 - 10 only because there were complications during hte surgery. Both surgical competence and bedside manner are very very important.

I haven't actually met my surgeon yet but I have read good things about him and his office. The office staff so far are very friendly and very helpful. Getting my surgery approved was very easy. I didn't have to do much of anything. As for what is better, surgical competence or bedside manner or both, surgical competence should reign supreme. But bedside manner is important too. I'd say 60%-40%.

I thought Dr. Owens was direct and straight to the point. I absolutely love him! Nancy was particularly helpful and pleasant in dealing with insurance and expediting the surgical process for me.

Dr. Owens is very upfront about the risks of the surgery and the aftercare process. He answered all my questions and prepared me for what to expect following the surgery.

I didn't know what to think about consuming ONLY protein drinks for the first few weeks, I mean afterall, food was my best friend. I have realized that having this surgery isn't a "quick fix," it is a lifestyle change. I truly appreciate the rigidity of the post-op instructions and commitment Dr. Owens insisted, explained, and expected from me. Dr. Owens is fantastic!

Dr. Owens has been so far very friendly and professional. The office staff is great, I can't express what a great experience I have had with them so far! I go in For Surgery Tuesday Feb 1st, so I will change this if anything happens, but so far I have only heard great things about Dr. Owens, and I am entrustin myself to his care.

My very first impression was that he was a very serious man, but after he read my medical record and looked up at me and smiled, I warmed right up to him. I think he's great. He saved my life with the surgery. I love the way he teases me. My drain accidently came out while I was walking around the nurses station after surgery, and he teases me about pulling it out on purpose. Dr. Owens greatly emphasizes aftercare, insistes that we exercise and use weights, and that we attend support group meetings. His clinic sponsors two support group meetings a week. I know some clinics that only have one a month. I think his staff could be better organized but they are very friendly. The information they put out in their pre-op classes and in the handouts can be confusing, overwhelming and contradicting. You really have to dig in and ask questions to get it all straight. He goes over the risks of surgery, but he should probably drill it into his patients because we are all so blinded with the possibility of losing weight and feeling better. I think his surgical competence and bedside manner are both great. I've had a couple of minor complications, and he returned my phone calls immediately, with one being late at night. I would rate Dr. Owens a 9 out of 10, not a 10 because of staff disorganization. They could use a patient liaison who has actually had weight loss surgery. No one in his office has had the surgery. His support groups get 10s. They are all great people and we are like family. The above previous statements are just my own personal impressions of my own personal experience, and I am not making any statements about what other people may experience.

my first imression if owens was he was straight foward and to the point there was not beating around the bush and i like that. i needed to hear the truth you know sometimes the truth is what it takes. I keep that thought of him in mind the whole time. The staff at alvarado hospital is great i love pam she is awesome and so is everyone else in there. There was really nothing off the top of my head that i would say bad about owens he is awesome. He has answered what questions and concerns i have had afterwards to the fullest. He did let me know there were risk involed in this and let me know what there were and he told me that this was just a starting tool it was up to me to get the weight off and keep it off. his surgical competence and beside manner were both great.

I am actually seeing Dr. Owens out of San Pedro, CA -- with procedure being done at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, in Torrance, CA

I went in expecting a rather cold, impersonal personality, as this was the consensus, although touted as an Excellent Surgeon.

As luck would have it I was pleasantly surprized. Dr. Owens is intense, and serious about what he is doing, but he was kind, supportive. If you're looking for a sappy, huggy new best friend, he's probably not your guy, but over all I was impressed.

The Program at Coastal Obesity, really spells it out -- there are no secrets, they give it all up front, good and bad. There is lots of support before and after.

So far, so good ---

10/13/04 --- Today is my 5 month Anniversary. It has been an awesome experience and Dr. Owens has been great.

I met Dr. Owens at a surgical weight loss seminar at Alvarado Hospital (San Diego Institute for Surgical Weight Control).

I was impressed with his presentation. His manner was professional and courteous. He has a great deal of experience with RNY procedures, having performed over 500 laproscopically.

He was direct and complete in addressing the benefits and risks of the procedure. He emphasized the importance of aftercare as an essential element for short and long term weight-loss success.

As an R.N., I am looking at surgical competence and care very little about bedside manner. Generally, I look to a surgeon's office staff to provide support in a friendly and helpful manner. At Alvarado (SDISWC), the staff certainly does this.
