Coastal Center for Obesity Bariatric Center
My first impression of Dr. Owens, was that I knew that he knew what he was talking about. My impression never changed over time he always remained the knowledgable Dr. I had first met. He has the best office staff, they were very welcoming and very professional. I am very happy with the Dr. I chose to do my surgery and I am pretty sure I can say the same for the many others he performed the surgery on.
I met Dr. Owens and his staff during my pre-op examination. Even before I met Dr. Owens staff I found them to be very caring and helpful. They helped me with my paper work and submitted the request to my insurance company for approval. They assisted me with the requirements I had to have prior to my surgery. Since I live out of state they were very helpful in me getting these things done. During my pre-op exmination Dr. Owens staff was very helpful in getting me through it with the least amount of stress. They were very informative. Dr. Owens staff is the best! I have found Dr. Owens to be a very thorough and caring doctor who puts his patients at ease. He gave me his business card so I could call him directly if I had any quesitons. Doctor Owens staff continue to be so helpful in keeping me on my journey with monthly calls from Shiryl. I really do appreciate all they have done and are doing to help me reach my goal.
My surgeon was Dr. Owens of the Coastal Center for Obesity. He has always been friendly and competent with a good bedside manner. Dr. Oliak followed up with me in the hospital a few times and I REALLY liked him! Dr. Owens stresses exercise post-op and working your butt off the first 8 months to get rid of the weight. Their group has a great support group if you live in the area, great nutrition class, great office staff... I'd say overall the group rates an 8 out of 10 (only because there hasn't been much interaction after my drain tube was taken out - I've been sort of on my own since then, luckily with no problems). rnrnMy actual hospital experience with Chapman Medical Center was awful - all the normal rooms were full, so I had to stay in the CCU until my last day. The weekend shift had a bunch of people who hardly spoke english, and they wouldn't allow a phone in my room, so my family was freaked out to find I was still in CCU and wasn't allowed to talk to them on the phone. They were very worried that something had gone wrong, and I had no idea this was all happening. I hear it was a misunderstanding, but that doesn't really change the facts.
My first impession of Dr. Owens is that he was nice and to the point. My impression did not change after surgery...he and his staff were very helpful and answered all of my questions and concerns. His associate Dr.Khalil is a sweety pie and I secretly call him my (Dr.McDreamy). There is nothing that I did not like about him I feel that he (they) respect you if you are educated about the procedure and do your best to honestly work the program. I feel that they respond in a positive manner to proactive patients. Being that I was an out of town patient I can not comment on his aftercare...it was competent. He gave an honest assesment regarding the risks of surgery. I woud rate his surgical competence a 10/10 and his bedside manner a 8/10. Like I said he did his job and I knew that the rest was up to me. I just wanted the best surgeon to install my tool (he did kidney transplants before going into bariatric surgery) and I felt comfortable with his experience and belief in this work. I went from 232 to 108lbs. thanks to God, Dr.Khalil, and Dr.Owens.rnrnrn rnrnrnrn
I wasn't sure about having this until I met Dr. Owens at the seminar. He explained it so well that I immediately felt comfortable and ready to pursue the insurance and surgical option. So far I am still in the processing phase, but the staff has been really helpful and Catherine has been very patient with me. Update, Dr. Owens now requires an upper G.I. as well as other testing.
When I first met Dr. Owens, I could see he was a man with alot going on. He would look at me when I was talking, but I could see in his eyes that his wheels were spinning faster than I felt I was talking. I wasn't sure if he heard what I was saying. As the consultation progressed, I found him to be very understanding of my situation, so much so, that he was able to convey many of my personal daily torments in a concise manner to my husband who attended the meeting with me. I was impressed that he spent as much time talking to my husband as he did to me, answering any question we had. Before meeting with Dr. Owens, my husband was completely against the idea of surgery for me. By the time we were done, my husband had a much better understanding and felt better about supporting my decision. I had my laperscopic RNY surgery on 7/6/2006 and have had no complications thus far. The recovery has gone very smoothly and I am so thankful to have had Dr. Owens as my surgeon. His skill, competence, and patient care outstanding!
