Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss Bariatric Center
My first impression of Dr. Shina was he knew what he was doing. He wanted me to know all the risks and went into detail about them. His staff is very helpful and friendly. He is very strict, and expects you to do what he says, which is in our best interest. I think he is an excellent surgeon, who wants only the best for his patients, and will do whatever it takes to see that you get the best. He gets straight to the point, and is a man of few words, but what he says is to be heeded.
I had met Dr. Shina over two years ago, when I was pursuing the lapband. Now that I am pursuing the lap gastric bypass, I chose him again to be my perspective surgeon. He was just as thorough and kind this time around as the last time. He really knows the subject of bariatric surgery well and can explain it in a way that anyone could understand. He explains especially thoroughly about pulminary embolisms. His office staff was wonderful and took their time with all my paperwork. He was so caring in making sure that my husband and I had all our questions answered and told us to just call his office any time if we thought of anymore questions for him.
My first Impression of Dr Shina was he was Hard core and to the point, even made me cry, but after I calmed down and thought about it. I knew that I wanted a Dr that cared enough not to sugar coat anything....You really need to know the cold hard facts, he is very sincere and a very good Doctor. Now that I have known him a while, My feelings have changed greatly, I am not intimidated by him anymore....lol .....I am more at ease with him amd he has encouraged me every step of the way.....but I have been through alot , with alot of trouble due to bleeding in the stomach. And a hernia repair, The only thing that I didn't like was the scar after my hernia repair, it is hidious, I am going back to find out what happened or if it is due to all the weight loss and no tummy tuck...will keep you posted on that.
My first impression of Dr. Shina is that he is very straight forward and doesn't hold back anything! After my consultation I was even more impressed with Dr. Shina, he seems genuinely concerned about his patients and is overly cautious in making sure that his patients are safe! The office staff is very nice and helpful. Dr. Shina's follow up care seems very thorough and structured. The risks were completely and thoroughly explained to me. I cannot wait to have the surgery!
Dr. Shina was great! He is no nonsense and committed to the success of his patients. I am very glad I chose him as a surgeon.

Surgical competence
First of all, I am in the process of trying to change bariatric surgeons, for one that is closer to me. At present, I have to travel over 4 hours one-way to see Dr. Shina. He and I both are concerned about post-op follow-up.
Having said that, I enjoyed Dr. Shina's seminar very much. He was quite personable, explained procedures, risks, etc. very clearly. I then had a one-on-one with him.
His demeanor seems to become more professional in a one-on-one. The man does NOT mince words. There is no "warm, fuzzy" feeling. Which is just fine by me. I rate competence a lot higher than bedside manner.. especially when I'm dealing with my life.
He has a very structured aftercare program, and insists on it being part and parcel of the surgery.
His staff have always been very friendly, polite and helpful.. very nice ladies. I have been dealing with Glenna for the most part, and she is just a lovely person. Very patient, very kind.
I get the impression from Dr. Shina that he believes very passionately in what he does. He was very professional, very outspoken, and did not patronize me, which many doctors do when dealing with obese patients. He also instilled a feeling of trust in his competence.
Overall, on a scale of 1-10, 10 being high, I would rate him 10 for the trust in his competence he gave me, and perhaps a 7 on bedside manner.. hard to judge that one. Maybe with more interaction he loosens up some.
The important things for me were the feeling of competence, the feeling of trust in his abilities, and the dedication he has for what he does. Were it not for travelling distance, I would use him in a heartbreat.
I love him! He is wonderful.Knows what he is doing. Wonderful staff all of them very helpful. I recommend Dr. Shina and his staff very strongly!
I really like Dr. Shina, he is very straight forward. He makes his patients quit smoking if they smoke before surgery and it really is a true blessing. I would have no other surgeon do the wls on me besides him. He has a wonderful bedside manner, very compassionate, and always wants the best for his patients. When I called after hours Dr. Shina returned my call very quickly. His office staff is very professional and wonderful. They worked really hard to reschedule my surgery very quickly and as soon as possible. I wooould give his office staff an A+....I never ever had a problem with the staff. I would like to tell his future patients that he is very strick with his rules of before surgery and after surgery but it is for our own good. He is
very strict with his aftercare....I mean if your not going to do what he wants you to do, then why go thru the wls. He explain the risk of this surgery very plain and blunt. And I just praise him for it....Dr. Shina is an A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ in my book....To me he is very knowledgeable of this surgery and he a wonderful surgeon. I just can't praise him enough. His surgical competence and bedside manner is just out of this world.. If you would ask me if I would let him do this again, I would definitely have to say yes. I would reccommend him in a heartbeat to anyone.
