Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss Bariatric Center
Dr. Shina is very informative, straight forward and I feel he errs on the side of caution. Which I liked. He seems to be and extremely competent surgeon but his bedside manners lacks a little. I woudl rather have brilliance in surgery and poor bedside manners. His office staff did a lot to help me get approved but one in particular was very rude and short with not only me but others with whom I spoke. It was almost as if she was looking down her nose at us or she thought we were ignorant. After care is very important to Dr. Shina and there is a lot of support offered through the Right Weigh Program.
Dr Shina was great, I had heard alot of not so nice things about his bedside manner but he did not live up to them. He was wonderful from start to finish.
Had consultation with Dr. Shina on 07/05/05. He was everything I expected and more. He is very thorough in explaining the lifestyle changes that will be required, the risks and benefits of the procedure. I was surprised to be told that I could qualify for the lap RNY. I feel I could not be in better hands. His office staff & nutritionist are also great. They are making this process as easy to work through as possible. Can hardly wait for approval. He also highly emphasizes aftercare and support group. The only thing I did not like was that the one on one time was so short.
Dr. Shina is very forward and straight to the point. He was also very funny on my initial consult today. You can tell that he wants to help and he will do whatever is within his means to help you reach your goals. He really emphasized after care as well as what could happen during the surgery which helped me become more aware of risks that I didnt even know about. His office staff was extremely friendly and the insurance girl let me know she was going to be crossing he fingers and toes for my approval. She told me that it was important for more young people to want to change their lifestyles early before its too late. Thats what I want to do. All and all I think I made the best choice for a surgeon and his staff.
my first impression was he was very professional and gave my all that facts
he has done 2 hernia operations since my pypass and made my life betteroffice staff is geat very pateint with my phone calls.
his wife his a nurse at his office i think that should say somethingi don't think i'd work with my husband
the nutritionist and support groups are great for aftercare and his follow ups.
all risks are told up front from first meeting
i would recommend dr shina to anyone as family would also say
i would say both competence and bedside are good expereinces but is a buzy man and i always got the point left my silly unecessary questions to the nurses.
My first impression was that he was passionate about giving people a new life through weight loss surgery. He didn't mince any words, which I liked, but later felt like he could take more time with his patients after surgery. His bedside manner is, shall we say, lacking in skills?
And a few "birdies" told me that he rants and raves during surgery-a short fuse. Which is hearsay-I was out of it! But, that is what I liked the least-that he didn't spend any time at all with me in the hospital. He seemed so anxious to get out of the room, and didn't even acknowlege my family. He gives alot of info. about the surgery, risks, etc. but not (in my opinion) enough about what to expect post-op. He seems to be very impatient when his patients are not "up to snuff." Sort of made me feel guilty for feeling like crap. But, it could also be looked at as frustration and deep caring.
For future patients-if you need/want tender loving care, I would think about it.I do think he is a competent surgeon, and overall his rating is good. He did take much more time with me today (I was having more problems-two months out) but he also said I hadn't stopped complaining since surgery. Which is true-I ended back in the hospital after 10 days, was totally dehydrated because I couldn't eat or drink due to dry heaves. I felt like he thought I should just "buck up." But he did tell me that lots of patients end up back in the hospital, and perhaps I was expecting too much too soon. So, he does have a soft side, it has just taken awhile to see it. I am not a hypocondriac, but things are not the way I envisioned them and I needed some explanations. He reassured me I was normal which really helped.
Before surgery I said that surgical competence was better, but now I believe that the surgeon needs to have both competence and good bedside manner. This is doable I think. Of course, all of this is just my personal experience and opinion. I have talked to other bariatric patients who have sailed through with no problems whatsoever.
My first impression what that he truley cared about the field of medicine he is in. He is an advocate for obese people and has spent many years doing everything he can to help as many people as he could.
His office staff is very friendly and compassionate with everyone. The reason, I think, for this is that most of his staff has had the WLS and all can and will tell you their expierences.
Dr. Shina feels that once he does this surgery, he will always be your doctor and will never leave you alone in you jorney. He has an aftercare program, weekly surport meeting, and you can call him at any time and ask question.
He is very specific about the risks of surgery and about the life long changes and responsabilities the patient will haver.
I feel the surgical competence is better, but If you don't actually feel comfortable with your surgeon, you will probable not choose him/her.
So far...I would rate Dr. Shina with an A+.
