Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss Bariatric Center
I have met with Dr. Shina once during the initial consult as well as his seminar the same day. I have to say I love how is so honest and straight to the point he does not sugar coat ANYTHING!!! I am looking forward to this journey and I know that he will be the push I need to do what needs to be done. I will update more as my experience with him grows.
He was no nonsense
No
I LOVE him he is the BEST
They are very helpful
hehe won't let me drink regular big red...
He is the best around but he does not take any slacking.
Very much so
Very on you like mud on a stick
Very good he explains everything totally
I rate him very highly a 10+
He is very easy to talk to once you get a feel for what he accepts from you. Do what you are told and he will be happy... You will be happy as well.. BUT if you don't do what he accepts you to do he will let you know and won't be shy about telling you to get off your rump and start doing things right..
I think Dr. Shina speaks his mind. He doesn't pull any punches. That may throw some people off but in the long run it may save a life. He tells it as it is. I respect him for that. Also, he truly cares about his patients. I think he's a bit paternal with us - thus the laying it on the line. But isn't that what a doctor should be like if he cares? So, I'm very happy with Dr. Shina so far. I feel that I can trust him to tell me the truth at all times and that he'll keep my best intrests in mind.

When Dr. Shina first walked into the seminar, he was in his scrubs, and I was like, that can't be him! LOL I wasn't sure I liked him at first, but then he began to talk to us, and I knew he was everything I had heard. He is very personable, truly cares about the well-being of his patients. He didn't beat around the bush about the risks, and talked a great deal on PEs. The office staff was really great. I don't remember all their names, but they were very friendly, helpful and smiling all the time. They put me at ease right away. At first, I kinda got the impression he might be a little "cocky", but that impression didn't last more than 20 seconds. He stressed the fact that he wasn't going to "talk us into" having this surgery, but rather try and talk us out of it. He made sure we knew it was a "last resort". I'm not sure about the aftercare program. Overall, I would say on a scale of 1 - 10, he's a 9.5. I think both surgical competence and beside manner are important.
My first impression of Dr. Shina was that he is very straight forward and wasted no time telling us all just how he wants things done and he expects you to follow his instructions to the letter or else. At first I thought he might be a bit of a stuffed shirt but as the seminar went on he began to joke just a little and that made me feel better. I like the fact that he is up front and tells you if you don't want to do things his way you can find another surgeon because he won't do surgery on you. Most of the office staff are friendly however one of the girls is just a little to stuffy in my opinion and I think a smile would do her some good. He realy emphasizes after care so if you pick him as your surgeon be ready to follow instructions to the letter. Dr. Shina also went over the risks very well with us along with the benefits. I like him he is honest and up front and I believe he cares about what happens to his patients. I had my surgery on 9/20/04 and I was surprised at the wat Dr. Shina takes care of you. He makes sure that you are in as little pain as possible and answers any question you may have but makes no time foe small talk so I quess you could say he has no bedside manner. I would have as my Dr any time he is the best.
Dr. Shina is fabulous!!! He did my mother in laws surgery...he's great. He is strait forward and right to the point...which I like. He will not baby you...you're in it or you're not....which I can appreciate. His staff is very helpful. They take care of everything..and they are always available if you need anything!
When you first meet Dr. Shina...you will love him after you get used to him!!! At first, he seems a little rough around the edges...maybe even a little mean. But I myself love his no BS attitude. He is very much a part of your aftercare. He supports you after the surgery as much as before and during. He is very strait forward about the risks, and he is very thourough about explaining them. He is very informed. Dr. Shina and his staff are great all around.
I found Dr. Shina to be straight forward with answering question. He answered questions fully and thoroughly. I am encouraged by the fact he has performed so many weight loss surgeries with only one person dying before the cardiac filter. I felt like he would fight to get my surgery if he feels like I'm ready and serious about losing weight.
I like the idea that he is stern with aftercare. He expects you to follow his directions and instructions to the tee. This is what I think I need in a surgeon and aftercare program. I do better with strict supervision.
He compared the risks of WLS surgery with the risks from any major abdominal operation. There are risks and there are definite benefits. Each individual has to weigh the risks and benefits for themself, and make a well informed decision.
So far I don't have anything bad to say, but I haven't had my one on one consultation with him yet.
My first impression of Dr. Shina was not good or bad. He was pretty matter of fact about everything. By the end of my weight loss surgery, I was so impressed with him. He is an excellent surgeon. I had an open RNY and spent over a week in the hospital. Dr. Shina is very careful. I was not experiencing any problems in the hospital, but my oxygen numbers were slightly low. He insisted we do an x-ray and discovered a slight case of pneumonia. Thanks to him, it was caught and treated early instead of being discovered later. I think future patients should be aware that sometimes Dr. Shina appears harsh if your blood work is not coming out right or your weight loss is not on track, but I think he just really wants you to be successful and he insists that you follow his directions. I was pretty bad about getting my protein in and it always showed up in my blood work. He would really get on my case about it! :) Aftercare is very important to Dr. Shina. His office has run an support group and he attends and also brings in plastic surgeons and nutritionists to help. Overall he is a wonderful surgeon and I would choose him again in an instant. I have been lax in following any aftercare program. My preop weight was 379, my lowest weight was 159, and I am currently 220. After my weight loss I was able to have a baby and I am a stay-at-home mom. Over the last 2 years (my son is 2) I have regained 60 pounds and am now seriously trying to lose it. That's the reason for joining this group....looking for some support!
So far so good. Very informative seminar. Staff was pleasant and helpful.
