Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss Bariatric Center
I loved Dr. Shina from the moment I met him. He performed my WLS with great skill. I came out of the surgery with no problems.
Dr. Tompkins performed my incisional Hernia surgery on Sept. 2004 at Kings Daughter's Hospital. He was great. I went to see him for the first time and he was right on it. He saw what needed to be done and took control of it. He is the best. I would rate him a 20 on a scale of 1-10. He was totally the best.
I met Dr Shina at an orientation meeting. My first impression was that he was a "straight shooter" type of person. My PCP had already given me the information that he had extensive experience with bariatric surgery and a great reputation.
His office staff was very professional and pleasant. They have always done everything they could to accomodate me, especially with paper work required by my employer.
Dr Shina can seem aloof at times. Future patients should be aware that when it comes to your health, he is very proactive.
There is an aftercare program, and he is associated with Rightweigh. You also have followup visits every three months.
He was very emphatic about the risks with surgery.
Dr Shina is TREMENDOUS, he truly is a life saver.
It would be great if you could have both, but I'll pick surgical competence.
Dr Shina is very professional, but he does " tell it like it is". He tells you what you need to do and he expects that you follow his directions.
Dr. Shina was straight forward, humorous, very informative. Very blunt. Kind person.
Dr. Shina's staff has been nothing but helpful, kind, and efficient.
I have complete faith in Dr. Shina and perfect faith in God.
I had been warned that Dr. Shina did not have a bedside manner and was a very down-to-business type person. However, at the seminar, I thought he was quite likeable. He told it like it is but smiled and made me feel comfortable.
He is very strict in his aftercare procedures. He knows what you've gone through and wants to see you succeed. I am a member of RightWeigh for life so I can call on them anytime if I have any questions, too.
His overall rating to me is 10. I'm so glad I chose him because he is so competent and earned my trust from the very beginning. If you are looking for a great doctor, I recommend Dr. Shina. This has been my experience but in no way am I implying that you could be as lucky as me. You have to research & research to figure out if/when/who will do your surgery that is in your best interest. Good luck to anybody reading about my personal experience with Dr. Shina.
Dr. Shina is extremely blunt and direct but I liked him immediately. His office staff is wonderful. He thoroughly covers all aspects of the surgery during the consultations and once again before you go in for your surgery. He emphasizes not only the benefits and risks but the life changes you have to make for this to succeed. His surgical competence and bedside manner are both excellent and I would recommend him to anyone.
My first impression of Dr. Shina was "Oh yes, I am going to love him". He wasn't the typical "blow smoke up your ass" surgeon. He was brutually honest, straight forward and laid out his plan of action with the confidence of an expert. I met with him, he answered all of my questions with ease and immediately I knew that I had made the right choice to have him do my surgery. For the most part the office personnel was very friendly. There was one staff member, not sure of her name, but she was a little on the sarcastic side. She asked me if I smoked and I said no. She then stated "are you sure" and raised an eyebrow at me. I am 33 years old and I have never smoked so I was pretty sure that I didn't smoke on that particular day. I wanted to say that very thing to her but I held my tongue and stated "Yes Maam, I am positive that I don't smoke". She then sarcastically questioned me again when I told her that I was not, nor have I ever been on any routine medications. Every one else in his office was very informative and answered my questions as soon as possible. Nancy was great and there was another that set up all of my appointments for me, even setting 3 of the 4 on the same day so I wouldn't have to drive the 2 hours to the clinic 4 different times in a week or so. Thank you Dr. Shina!
My first impression of Dr. Shina was that he seemed like a kewl guy. It was very obvious he was willing to perform surgery only if you were willing to abide by what he asks. The staff seemed friendly and didn't seem to mind answering questions over the phone. I think Dr. Shina is very firm about what he expects of you as a patient, and I am thinking he would not be easy to deal with if you lied to him or did not do what he asked of you. For example... SMOKING... seems to big a big NO NO for Dr. Shina. Luckily I DON'T smoke. He seems to have a very structured program including aftercare, etc. He provides you with a list of things you have to do, and is very helpful. A heads up would be to schedule your psychiatric evaluation early folks, this is what will hold up your surgery date. It is essential you get the things on the list done in order, if you don't want any holdups. Dr. Shina was very detailed in the risks of surgery, he pulls no punches with them, so be prepared. In my opinion this was the most important thing and I feel he adresses the risks VERY well! So far, I think Dr. Shina will be great to work with and I have heard many good things thusfar. I am hoping he has a good bedside manner, time will tell. I will get back to ya on that!
I first met Dr. Shina on April 20,2004 and my first impression is that he is very knowledgable about this surgery and the risks involved. I was impressed with him being so up front about how many surgeries he has performed and the patients that he has lost and how he lost them and he has taken that and had made his program better. I liked the fact that he is upfront and answers all of your questions and encourages you to ask all that you can. I liked the fact that he had the 2-30cc cups there and showed us how much we would be able to eat. And then witht he Dixie cup as well. He was extremely informative and and very thorough. His office staff was very friendly as well and I look forward to meeting the office staff in the Indiana office since I have only met Anita and Gina in the Louisville office. He was very firm on the fact that you have to follow their instructions when it comes to eating so you will get the maximun effect from your surgery. He did address the risks as far as the blood clots and the risks that are involved with them which made me feel good that he does address those. I have had surgies in the past and none of the doctors said anything about being obiese and that being a factor. Overall I would rate Dr. Shina and his staff a 10.
He is a very kind person and wants only what is best for you. His office staff is very helpful and they return your calls also.lol. He told me that I would have to quit smoking :-(......oh well need too anyways.
He is very blunt. But says it in a nice way.But he tells you what is the best for you. LIke me, I have to have a filter put in before my open RNY because I have a history of blood clots.
I was very impressed with Dr. Shina and immediatly took a liking to him. I have never liked doctors that were straight forward but I think it is critical for the profession that he is in. I like the fact that he doesn't sugar coat anything and will tell you the truth. I haven't had surgery yet..I am currently going through the process, but I am very confident in his ability as a surgeon, and I can't wait to be on the other side.
