William Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak Hospital
When I first met Dr. Wagner he was very unassuming, I didn't know what to make of him. He was nice, but I didn't make up my mind about him until the day of the surgery. He exceeded all my expectations. He came to see me before the surgery and he introduced himself to my family and really made them feel comfortable. After surgery, he talked to my family and explained how the surgery went, answered all their questions and they felt very informed. He has a very calming nature and is geniunely concerned about his patients. I had no complications from the surgery. I would reccommend him to everyone. He was excellent!
Very calm, professional, knowledgeable and a good listener.rnrnHasn't changed so far.rnrnOffice staff seem a bit overworked and peckish.rnrnCan't say there was anything I didn't like.rnrnMake sure you have done your homework.rnrnVery emphatic about having adequate aftercare both by my Primary Care Physician and by Dr. Wagner himself.rnrnVery forthright about risks versus benefits.rnrnOverall - a very understanding man.rnrnI also had a second surgeon, a Dr. Aram Minasian. At pre-admission testing I was NOT impressed with this man AT ALL. Waited an hour to see him and saw him for all of 12 minutes, HOWEVER....once I saw him in the hospital he was COMPLETELY different. Very informative, relaxed, unhurried and willing to answer any and all questions and reassure me that I was doing fine.rnrnAs a TEAM, these two are AWESOME!
I met Dr. Wagner before my surgery, and he was very knowledgable about all the bariatric proceedures, both modern and past. He knew about the proceedure my Aunt had done almost 20 years ago and talked to us indepth about all of them. He was very confident and very reassuring. I felt at ease the whole time we discussed my obesity problem and let me know that he would do everything in his power to help me get the tools I needed to overcome this disease.rnrnThe day of the surgery I was very scared and nervous. Again he put my mind to ease and was very calming. Even as I was in the operating room and they were getting me ready, he was there and told me not to worry, that he was confident about the proceedure. After the surgery he came in and checked on me periodically and was very concerned about my health and well being, as well as my comfort.rnrnHe was by far and away the best surgeon I could have ever hoped for. I wish more Doctors were like him in the medical field. He is not only my surgeon but a good friend now, and I can't thank him enough for everything he has done for me.rnrnDoctor James Wagner.....Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget what you have done for me and I promise to do everything in my power to help promote the tools that can be given to help people like myself.
My impression of Dr. Bacal was a good one when I met him in the seminar. The office staff is great. However I was told that I did not qualify at first because they thought I had another insurance company. Once they realized that I had BCBSM almost 2 months later they did call and let me know that I meet their qualifications for surgery. In a way the delay turned out better becasue I had a trip scheduled for disney for the begining of Aug and that would had been hectic with the diet. Dr. Bacal did explain why this surgery is less risk than the rny due to my religious beliefs. I was not going to have the rny anyways. I would rate Dr. Bacal at an 100% also his nurse gets back to me via email right a way if I have any questions.
This is an enormous hospital and, with size, I feel they're losing the personal touch. While it is good for the patient, the family that waits does not receive anywhere near the attention that the patient receives. My wife was left to do everything herself and was needlessly sent across the hospital and to several different waiting rooms during and immediately following my surgery.
We loved our surgeon! For this, I am now in the process of getting surgery at this hospital. My husbands experience with the hospital itself was poor. There was no bariatric equipment i.e. chairs, large slippers (that they made him wear) or large gowns. He was in a room with a gentleman who had colostomy problems and was in a lot of pain. He also became dehydrated and had to stay an extra 2 days. However, his surgeon was incredible, as was his bariatric MD. I am now in the process and know I am in good hands with the surgeon.
