St. Alexius NewStart Hospital
Be prepared to wait FOREVER to get anything...they were decent about bringing pain and other meds....but I had to wait forever, like 6-8 hours for a sanitary pad (they told my hubby not to leave my suitcase in ICU),then they threw them on the table by the bed and did not bother to help me put one on. Once I got into a regular room I asked one of those nurses to help. Then I lad there for most of a day and they never hooked up my leg cuffs....things like that that really made me mad. EVERY time I told them I hurt, they were there fast to give me something. They have some so so nurses and some really outstanding nurse assistants who were very helpful and kind. This hospital was just getting organized for this kind of surgery and I think that within a few months, they will have their ducks in a row.
I felt secure and felt my family and friends were secure with visiting. I feel the staff were excellent in the care they rendered despite the acquity load that they had at times. The surgical obese patient requires much more time, energy and effort than the non-obese surgical patients. The staff made every effort to spend as much time as they could with me and this made me feel secure. I love all the New Start Personnel at South Pointe. Each one made an effort to come see me. That also made me feel very good. I felt like I still had their support even though the surgery was done. I highly recommend SouthPointe to every patient who has Bariatric surgery with Dr. Fabito.
The personal care assistants are WONDERFUL! Especially a lovely gal named Shondura, and a lovely lady named Mary. They were my angels! The nurses are a bit slow to respond to calls, and won't give meds until you ask for them (which I found out the hard way). In general, I was very pleased with Southpointe.
I felt that the hospital was on the dirty side. The night shift staff wasn't friendly and they didn't answer their call lights very promptly. I was not taken to ICU FOLLOWING SURGERY AS THE icu was full, however I wasn't turned or moved for over 24 hours following surgery. I thought they were suppose to be so concerned about blood clots and pneumonia, but I laid in the same position all of that time.
I thought the nursing staff at SouthPointe was awful. I had my wife staying with me most of the time & she was not impressed with the nurse's friendliness or responsiveness. I had several bad IV lines installed & they created a few problems in my arms(severe bruising). I had several sores develop due to the nurse's not checking on me. This may have been due to my wife being there, but my wife isn't a nurse. The staff didn't realize what kind of surgery I had or even care as they didn't try & get to know you at all. I'm lactose intolerant & yet I was served with milk products everyday I was at the hospital. Nurses were very unresponsive & seemed to not care about you as a patient. I know it's not a nurse's job to be friends with you but a smile sure is nice once in awhile. An overall awful experience at SouthPointe after my surgery.
