Scripps Mercy Hospital (COE) Hospital
The staff was incredible, never made me feel self-conscious about all my flesh! Just warm and encouraging. The only "bad" thing was the constant checking in...but that in itself was reassuring...who needs to really sleep in the hospital? Overall the floor was very quiet...even during shift change. I would highly recommend this hospital. Please email me if you have more personal questions.
The hospital and staff was very understanding and compasionate. The only probkem was with the room mate assigned to my room who was not a Bariatric patient. She was up all night and noisy and very loud all night long. They should screen room mates and just put only bariatric patients together. Other than that the hospital experience was great.
We were promised private accommodations but due to current renovations (call for info prior to your surgery date) they were not able to accommodate me the first night. My roommate (who was there only the first night, thankfully, before she was released) was a cancer patient who had at least 7-10 relatives visiting, complete with classical guitar. I was awakened to the sound of her singing in the morning...usually ok with me, but not while I'm on morphine, please. She did check out that day and the hospital quickly blocked out the other bed so my son could be with me to be trained to help me. Just be aware the private accommodations mentioned in class/seminar may not be available at the time of your surgery, and definitely call ahead.
Also warn your relatives: Sommerset Suites (the nearest hotel) is overpriced, and the continental breakfast wasn't good, but it is the closest to the hospital. The shuttle service was not available after my release so I walked the 1/4 mile to my hotel room as I had to stay in San Diego for 7 days. Good thing is that the parking is free so it saves your relatives some cash, but 100.00 per night was a bit steep. Stay elsewhere, and cab it. You'll save money.
Also for your relatives: The hospital cafeteria is horrible. You're better off driving down the street to Starbucks or some of the other local restaurants. You know it's bad when your family nearly canonizes you for ordering Papa Johns for them while they're in the hotel.
The hospital staff for the most part was just fine; only one rude staffmember in the bunch. Great job guys...
