Highland Hospital Hospital
I cam not say enough good things about my surgeon, his resident, and office staff. The hospital on a whole wasn't too bad. The nursing staff was the worst I have ever seen or heard of. I had to wait over 3 hours for pain medication one time. There was a nurse that didn't know how to put the booties that inflate on your feet. When I went for a walk around the nurses station no one would accompany me or help me, even when I was on the morphine pump. I was walking into walls. I shared a room with my mother who had the surgery at the same time as me. That was comforting. The nurses would come in a introduce themselves at the begining of each shift. They would always tell us to call them if we needed them. When we would call a woman would respond over an intercom and tell us the nurse would be right in. Sometimes I had to call 3 or 4 times until someone would respond. When I would go out for walks the nurses were sitting around drinking coffee. We had to ask for the nuns hats in the bathroom to be changed and emptied before we could go. I realize that I was in the hospital over Christmas but more than half of the floor had empty rooms and there was a full staff on. This was unacceptable. I couldn't believe that they would not wheel me out of the hospital when I was going home. They didn't even walk me out. I thought that they needed to and that is was policy. All in all Go to Highland for Dr. O'Malley and you won't regret it. He is a wonderful surgeon and really cares and has an understanding of the obese patients he treats.
When I woke up after surgery no one was in my room and I had to urinate. I could not find the call button and I couldn't make much noise as my throat was parched and mouth was dry. Finally my husband came in and I guess I made my needs known to him as he went to get a nurse. He said the other nurses tried to find "my" nurse but she was off fliriting with someone. Then the other nurses came in to help joking that my husband was frantically circling around trying to find someone to help me. That first trip to the bathroom was the most excruciating walk ever.
When I was to leave the hosptial they didn't have a wheelchair big enough and the transport person said it would take awhile to get one. You would think they would have them on hand where Dr. O'Malley does his gastric bypass surgery! Anyway we got permission for me to walk out and I was very glad to leave.
I am not saying it was a totally negative experience but at least these two things should change: post ops should have constant attention and the call button should be very easy to see and reach. They should have extra large wheelchairs.
The Dr was WONDERFUL and I felt one hundred percent safe in his care. The hospital staff was mostly friendly even tho they all were this tiny little size twos.LOL.But the only complaint was that they didnt change the sheets all while I was there for 4 days and basically never came around to check on me,They came only if I called them which was rarely. The cleaning staff never came in to the bedrooms or bathrooms and when sharing a room its kinda nasty at times, specially in the bathrooms...To be honest thats all I could really say negative about the place...DR.O cjecked in each day and was so polite and sweet to me..and cute as a button too..heheh
My day nurse was a "floater" so there was long periods of time I didn't see her,and there was a time when called she didn't showed up two hours before the end of the shift. I had to wait till afternoon shift for pain meds. I found myself having to wait for the afternoon and evening shifts to get real nursing care.
