Hackensack University Medical Center Hospital
If you have to be in a hospital this is the place to be. I loved just about every nurse that took care of me (except one) from the recovery room to discharge. I considered hiring a private duty nurse for the first 24 hrs. and I'm glad I didn't--it would have been a waste of money. These ladies were on the ball!
The Pre-op area from Excellect. I had Diane Watson as my nurse and she was GREAT! OR staff was GREAT too. Although, after walking into the OR, I can't remember much. My experience in the recovery room was not a pleasant one. I had very unsensitive, non-caring nurses, and I wish they would have talked me through the difficult breathing experience I had. Instead, I had to talk myself through it. Thank God, I paid attention in child birth classes- LOL. The nurses on my floor were great, especially ERIN MERCADO, she is the BEST by far! Wish I could of had her everyday! Other great nurses were: Nancy, Donna, and Carmela. I must tell you that I found Robin to be not helpful and very forgetful, but she was pleasant. The worse nurse there was Christine and if ever I saw her again I would tell her EXACTLY what I thought about her leaving my Mother in pain (my Mom and I had GPS the same day). She was HORRIBLE. I can only say that she is too young and too inexperience to be a nurse. Very UNCARING person. You can be sure that I reported her and our experience to the head nurse before leaving the hospital. I don't want ANYONE to experience the lack of care she gave to my Mother.
OR staff - excellent
Recovery Room staff - Better than excellent - have had more than a few surgeries, and these girls were just fantastic!!!
Floor staff - fair to poor: don't tell me it's change of shift when my IV is beeping or I want a shot! And change of shift seems to take well over an hour! Why does night shift (11-7) not finish report and come to check you out until one am?? (and I'm an RN - I know how tough it can be - that's no excuse) Knowledgeable about WLS, however.
I was shocked that they had me walk into the operating room. That was a scary experience. Because there were no beds available they kept me in the recovery room for over 24 hours. From what the nurses there said it is a pretty common occurance, thought the hospital denies that. I am not sure how long I would have been there if I hadn't insisted on seeing a patient rep. After that I got a room pretty quick. My surgery was at 11am and my husband was not allowed to see me until 6pm because they have very restricted visiting. 10 minutes every three hours. Once I was up in a room my experience was wonderful.
