Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital
I was not on the floor that most WLS patients are placed on and I think that made a difference in my care. I was not *told* to walk or breathe or cough or anything. I did these things on my own. The dietary department was TERRIBLE! They brought inappropriate meals every single time (sugar, solids when I needed liquids!) The nurses were very busy. I felt sorry for them. I know it wasn't their fault. I was glad to get home. It wasn't a very pleasant experience.
I had two unpleasant opportunites during my stay. My first night after surgery a nurses aid came in the room with her dinner plate and sat in our room and ate her dinner. At that point I didn't feel like eating but I just thought it wasn't the place for her to have her meal. The second night I was having to go to the bathroom, which I could do by myself but I needed help getting the vibrating stockings off my legs. I paged the nurse 4 times and it took over 25 minutes to get someone to my room.
The operating and recovery staff were right on the money. The private room was as comfortable and secluded as could be possible. When I was mostly out of it in recovery and needed a fan to help me breath easier, they responded quickly. Only one nurse out of the whole lot didn't understand that I couldn't take a huge pill that was only partially cut up: this made my stomach queazy for a couple of hours and she called my surgeon without explaining that her pill caused the reaction. This incident almost made my doctor hold me over for another day since he thought I was having difficulty with food intake. Other than this particular nurse, everyone else was a-okay. It was wonderful how the admin staff processes the paperwork and there is no fuss or bother with all that once everything is set to go.
